Some ideas to improve the roster without selling the future
Long time reader, first time poster here. I was thinking about some possible ideas for Mo to possibly make at the deadline this year.
First I'll start with what I believe is the most pressing need for the Cards right now, a Left-Handed Reliever.
Even when he comes back, Flores is just not good enough for what we need him to be. I would personally love to see Ron Mahay or Damaso Marte if we could possibly get one of them. However, I know that is highly unlikely.
There are a few second teir options I think may be worth checking out.
- Eddie Guardado- Having a good year and Texas may think he is expendable. Should come at a reasonable price as well.
- Arthur Rhodes- May be the easiest LH reliever to pick up. Having a good season but the Mariners are heading no where.
Second on the list to me is the impact bat. There are a few middle infielders and outfielders that come to mind. Bay and Holliday to me are too far out of reach, i don't think Mo would pull the trigger even though we could probably put together a good enough package.
- Xavier Nady- Not sure if Pirates would keep him in the division but it could happen. Should be attainable at a moderate price.
- Brian Giles- Could possibly be a move like the Rockies made with Walker in 04 and I think Giles would be served well if he moved out of Petco. May not be too pricey because of his age and contract, type of move the Cards could possibly make. I know we have a lot of lefties, but a left handed bat could move in another trade or this one possibly.
- Barry Bonds- If he would play for the minimum, you never know. It would be nice to make an impact without trading prospects and Bonds would definitely see good pitches behind Albert and he would see better pitches in front of Bonds. I could tolerate Bonds if it got us to the play offs.
- Khalil Greene- A guy who I think would give us a good bat at a spot we definitely need one. Send Ryan in a package and we could improve vastly. Greene is also slick defensively and could use a change of scenery.
- Mark Grudzielanek- Never wanted him to go and with his age and contract shouldnt be too hard to get.Having a good year and would look good batting in the 2 spot. Gets on a lot.
- Christian Guzman- Shouldn't comand too much and could open up the ability to trade schu or make him your 4th outfielder so we could get some more pop in the lineup. Guzman could bat 1st.
I think another need that has come up that a lot of people don't think is a problem is our starting rotation. Here are some guys I would love to see and then some guys who could provide decent starting pitching until Waino and Carp return, if they do.
- Josh Fogg- This guy should be at the top of the list because he should be easy to acquire and has decent stuff and can pitch good in the majors. He will keep you in the game and the Reds have him in AAA because they don't like him. Walt may also help LaRussa and Co out as well.
- Odalis Perez- Could also be put in the pen when the Aces come back. Having a solid year but wont command too much.
- Livan Hernandez- Type of guy the Cards like to pursue. Would be better in the NL and could rebound for a team that plays the defense the Cards do. Had interest in the past.
- Kei Igawa- This is a guy who could be good in the NL, in my opinion. Yankees don't seem to have a use for him and could come cheap. Also, locked up until 2011, that could be a good thing at only 4 Million per year.
- Freddy Garcia- Don't really think it will happen but wouldn't cost prospects and has good stuff. If he takes a deal at around 6 mil after incentives prorated, I think it may be worth a chance, but I doubt the Cards would.
I know It was lengthy, but this is what the Cardinals could possibly bring in and not Mortage the future. Mo should definitely look into some of these options. Now, you can start the bashing because I know it is inevitable.

Chris Getz
Here is a guy I found in the White Sox AAA organization and right now Alexie Ramirez is hitting to well and blocking this guy. I don’t think he’d cost an arm or a leg, so getting him now might be a smart thing to do. He can hit too.
Getz/Ramirez
I don’t think Getz will be made easily available. It’s highly unlikely that Orlando Cabrera returns at SS next year given his personal problems with Ozzie Guillen, so after he walks Ramirez is the most likely choice for the shortstop position, allowing Getz to fill in at second.
I joined the Khalil Greene bandwagon
this morning. Reyes, Ryan, and Motte for Greene would be, I’d think, a favorable trade for us, with the Friars picking up a cost-controlled, MLB-ready SS, a starter who (DePodesta should think) could potentially thrive in their park, and a fireballing RHRP. We get an excellent defensive shortstop with some pop in his bat and a career .800+ road OPS who’s having a down year with the bat and is owed $6.5M+ next year, his final year of arbitration.
I like the sound of that proposal
and if Motte wasn’t enough, I would be willing to see them part with Salas too/instead. The Padres do seem to like the atypical relief pitchers (relief pitchers that don’t necessarily have to be fireballers).

Greene
Granted, Greene is better than Cesar Izturis, but he’s no world beater either. The guy has only been close to an .800 OPS once and his career OBP is very low and has been below .300 several times. Yes, he has played in a rough hitters park, but its not like his numbers are on some kind of borderline…they’re just bad.

look at his splits
.227/.290/.369/.659 at home versus .271/.321/.487/.808.
get him outta petco and he becomes a pretty darn good hitting shortstop.
Grudz
The problem is that both AK and Miles stand in the way. I favor re-acquiring Grudz as I think he’d be the most economical MIF replacement, but I just don’t see the Cardinals dumping either AK or, especially, Miles (primarily because TLR loves Miles).
I agree with Az that McClellan has the repertoire and track record to retire lefties, but that would require TLR to abandon his lefty-on-lefty inklings and I just don’t know if he could actually do that.
I'd rather see McClellan
used as a 7th-8th inning setup guy, retiring lefts and rights instead of a pure lefty specialist, though, wouldn’t you? You still need a lefty to pick up the other relievers.
They have a lefty specialist on the roster...
it’s Ron Villone—he’s filthy against lefties, but he’s always asked to pitch against righties too, and they light him up like a pinball machine. If he was simply used as a LOOGY, a la Tony Fossas, he’d be an asset.

Yea, I think that personally i think Greene would be a better option than Grudz. Also, if they went after grudz, i could see them shipping Ryan in the deal and make Miles the backup at short, not what I would want because I personally like Ryan. Greene would be a great fit for us allowing Izturis to become a back up for short and 3rd with miles and kennedy spiltting at second.
I also like the idea of Rhodes because I think he would be easier to get because of the team he is one. Maybe 2 low level prospects could pull him in and it wouldn’t be the guys everyone is looking forward to.
I thought for sure someone was going to bash this post, but it seems like it wasn’t as risky as I thought. It was just some targets I could see the cards having a chance at.
Gotta love this youth movement! Aaron Miles and Josh Phelps are the future of this team!

Jeremy Guthrie, SP of the Orioles
The Orioles should be sellers and Jeremy Guthrie could bolster our rotation. He’s not a strikeout pitcher but posted a 3.49 ERA and 1.19 WHIP so far this season. He’s only 5-and-7 because the O’s don’t provide run support. He could possibly come cheap because of his record and a move to the National league probably wouldn’t hurt his stats.
How about a middle infielder like Dan Uggla... I know it would be a longshot, but he’s only 27 and if TLR wants an impact bat he’d get it in Uggla. I don’t think we should trade Rasmus, but I could live with it for a guy like Uggla (or Holliday). The Marlins are perenial sellers and there’s no reason that should change any time soon.
If we're trading Rasmus
It damn well better be for Holliday. As good as Uggla is, his OBP is over 47 points lower than Holliday’s.

Shudder...Uggla for Rasmus - worst deal ever.
I would be interested to know how much the Angels want for Brandon Wood. He played SS before he was moved to 3B. He’s a plus defensive player with pop. He strikes out a TON and maybe he’s just another Tyler Greene but it’s an interesting possibility without a huge price tag. Khalil Greene would be a great upgrade and his upgrade in production over Izturis would be considerable. I just don’t know if that would be enough and there’s NO way Reyes, Ryan and Motte get that deal done. Reyes, Garcia and Ryan would be more like it.
Wood...
He’s never hit at the big league level. He seems like an Andy Marte type to me: too good for AAA but not good enough for the MLB for some reason. If he came super cheap I’d say yes, but I’m not much for trading for Angels players this decade either, usually if they’re ready to move a guy it’s because they’ve given up on him. I believe Edmonds was the last player they moved who played well for his new club.

Wood
has some pop but he is horribly inconsistent and strikes out a ton. if the angels just want to give up on him and want someone we’ve given up on as well (reyes) it might be worth making the deal, but i doubt they’ll give him up that cheap.
