even the announcers think that could end up getting one of the Cardinals hurt. There is hard playing baseball and stupid , that was the latter.

by mattyfrommo on Jul 10, 2008 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

nothing wrong with going out of your way to break up a dp

as long as you’re within reach of the bag, then you’re fine.

In this case, it’s boarderline whether or not he could have gotten the bag and he went in late. The Philly announcers said he went in high, but I don’t really think that was the case. He went in late.

And Duncan’s always been one to break up a double play. That’s the way he plays the game, and when you do, sometimes you’re a little more out of position than other times. This time it was boarderline, but I wouldn’t call it dirty.

We actually have a winning record against lefty starters this year (17-16).

That’ll be .500 after tonight, but still. We’ve faced the second most lefty starters in the NL.

by notmorganfreeman on Jul 10, 2008 3:12 PM EDT reply actions

that might have something more to do with the pitching

in those games than the hitting. I don’t know, but it sure does seem this team hasn’t hit a lefty worth a crap in weekks.

Right.......

So a guy is desparate for a job, so desparate he’s willing to play for the league minimum or to donate his salary to charity.

Not a sign he is or is willing to change. It’s a sign he’s willing to do anything to further his own record. You don’t think he looks at guys like Alex Rodriguez and Albert Pujols and thinks his record might fall?

He’s been all about himself for over 40 years. Why should I or anyone think he would ever change now?

I might have been pouring it on a bit thick there

Yeah Barry probably isn’t the best person to defend in this circumstance. I just never have thought he was the evil person he has been made out to be.
I don’t know the guy , I don’t know what he has been like outside of baseball, I just know what the media reports and who knows how much that means. Maybe he gives a lot of money to charity. We never hear anything about that. Only negative things get reported about Barry, but I agree he mostly has himself to blame for that.
I still think he is worth it.

Jim Hayes mentioned earlier this week that a lot of the guys in the clubhouse were asking him what he had heard about Matt Holliday getting dealt and how excited they’d be if it happened… Like they know they’re still a piece away from being able to make some real noise.

I really hate to blame bad baseball on something non-capturable and tangible like emotions and mindset, but the team may just be really down on themselves right now.

Screw Rollins.....

The play looked alot worse than it was. If you ask me, its just payback for their pitcher not getting ejected in the previous series for beaning Ryan.

They had a chance at payback if they felt they needed to, and they didn’t take it. Now they just need to shut their mouths and enjoy the victory.

by mattyfrommo on Jul 10, 2008 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

my take earlier......

I did not see the play…..

In college baseball as a runner breaking up the double play you must at least be able to touch the bag while sliding otherwise the umps call you out for interference… Obviously the umps let it slide a bit and generally if your hand is within a foot of the bag you are allowed to go after the middle infielder.

Now how far away from the bag was Duncan? The way people reacted they made it seem like Dunc was in the outfield….. Now be objective and let me know how much worse it was than the college rule.

by ICbirdfan on Jul 10, 2008 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Three to four-ish feet from the bag

no way would he have been able to touch it.

Then he used his arms to undercut and flip Rollins. Not a smart play.

Well who the hell can see forever?

by Alxfritz on Jul 10, 2008 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

His arms.....

We wasn’t trying to flip Rollins, he was trying to protect his face. It just happens, he did both of them.

by SoonerfanTU on Jul 10, 2008 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

but that puts him close to being a foot away from the bag

a little lean and some reach from a big dude like Duncan and you can make the argument he could have gotten close. And I disagree with the intent on the flip of Rollins. They were in total contact and that’s a natural reaction when you’ve got a guy’s pelvis right in your grill. Victorino made an effort to take out Ryans legs. Duncan at least went with the body check.

But, imo, it was boarderline. I can see where Rollins would be upset and that’s fine. If he wants to “work it out” with Duncan, I’m sure Chris would oblige.

by Tackle Box on Jul 10, 2008 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree to disagree

and Victorino wouldn’t have done anything if Duncan hadn’t the previous inning, so I don’t think we have anything to complain about.

by Alxfritz on Jul 10, 2008 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll give you the agree to disagree, I've always been willing to concede that point

But, even if you truly believe Duncan’s slide was an attempt to injure, then how can you then condone what Victorino did for the sole reason of revenge?

this will be my last comment on this, because it is a moot point

but he was not anywhere close to being able to touch the bag.
My problem was the same problem I had with Victorino’s slide later: you just don’t try to flip the 2B or SS, it is just asking for an injury to happen.

* sarcasm might be involved in this comment

by mattyfrommo on Jul 10, 2008 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Victorino's slide was a hundred times worse

His slide was a blatant attempt to take out the fielder and when he couldn’t get that done, he stuck his arm out and tried to take Ryan’s legs out while he was in the air. Duncan was off the bag and he slid late, but if there’s an issue of going high, it was because he was sitting straight up and his shoulders are basically at Rollins’ hip.

I disagree with you on the Duncan slide (slightly) but agree with you that it’s a moot point and that Victorino’s slide was much worse, and was an obvious attempt at retaliation.

I think the next series is going to be interesting.

by Tackle Box on Jul 10, 2008 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

meh

It’s (sliding to break up DP’s) is a stupid rule, but it’s the rule. As is the stupid rule that SS/2B’s don’t have to touch the bag. As it is written, it’s a judgment call, and no one was hurt.

if the Phils really care, they can petition to have it reviewed and have Duncan suspended, or they can throw at him next time. Or they can petition to have those two rules changed (can’t change one without changing the other, imho).

"If thats bad luck, lets DFA our luck away." -DriverZN

by SleepyCA on Jul 11, 2008 12:47 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree.

Both rules have to change, and the 2nd baseman having to touch the bag would be more important to me. If he is on the bag, than one can’t argue that the player was sliding for any reason other than to get on the bag.
i just think that after the slide into the catcher the other night, maybe Duncan should have been a bit more careful about what he was sliding into. We don’t need a career ending injury to follow one of our players. Especially a player that isn’t that fantastic to begin with.

One way or the other, the defense gets a DP on every infield pop-up with a runner on first.

by liam on Jul 11, 2008 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions

only with runners on first and second

since the guy who hits the ball will usually beat out a play at first. Since infielders already get double plays on almost every ground ball hit, I don’t see that it would be a huge problem…

The biggest problem would be that it would make the infielders look silly, and every now and then something would happen that would cause everyone to be safe.

I just think the rule needs to be more clearly defined.

It either needs to be in the infield or caught by an infielder. Otherwise, it is open to too much speculation.

Since this depressing game is over,

I have something to share with the group. Last night I went to the Cove to see the River Bandits take on the South Bend Silverhawks. Quad Cities won 8-2. Brett Wallace batted clean-up and went 1 for 4 with a single and a K (also HBP). He is one BIG guy, but he runs the bases pretty well. He sent some foul balls out of the park, but otherwise I didn’t get to see his power. He played third and I was VERY impressed with his arm. What a cannon! With men on first and second, he started a double play by catching a line drive and doubling the guy off first. Next batter struck out and the inning was over. Nice! Pete Kozma went 1 for 4 with a single, a K and a SF RBI. QC definitely played better D than the Hawks last night. Richard Castillo pitched 6 innings, 2 runs (both earned) on 5 hits, 2 BBs and 4 Ks, 1 HBP. Got autographs from both Brett and Pete, which was sweet. That is my mini report from “Down-On-The-Farm—Low A style”.

While the standings don't matter

the tending of the team somewhat does. The Cardinals offense is getting worse, the bullpen is in tatters and our rotation that is a patchwork is now 1 starter short any way you slice it.

We’ve got some holes in the ship and the ‘we can do it attitude’ of the team seems to be wearing off.

Okay.....

But that factored in an ineffective Izzy, and moved Franklin into a role he wasn’t meant for. The losses is more a result of the lack of offense and poor SP performances, than anything.

And don’t forget, we suffered through having Reyes in the pen for awhile too.

by SoonerfanTU on Jul 10, 2008 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Reyes only has 1 loss

I don’t think he is really even that much of a consideration when looking out our bullpen woes.

What makes us think the bullpen is ‘fixed’? We haven’t won too many close games since the team notched it’s 19th blown save of the season.

I'd look for a Loogy like Marte

and another RH reliever to replace Franklin or Izzy, take your pick. We both know Izzy is going to be installed as the closer so he can get to 300 so Franklin it is. I’d like to have a dominate RH to step in after Izzy muddles his way to these final 8 saves he needs.

By and large

the starting pitching has been fine, and outside of some starts lately that could have gone an inning or two longer, we haven’t found ourselves with insurmountable leads like last year. In this series alone, our starting pitching (and I’ll include Thompson with the starters) gave up 0, 2, and 4 runs. Hardly poor performances. And in the cubs series, the starters gave up 2, 2, and 3 runs. Looper and Lohse both pitched 7 innings against the cubs and Wellemeyer pitched only 5. Against the Phillies Pineiro threw 6.1 innings, Mulder/Thompson threw 5 (and were lucky to get that), and Looper threw 6. So in that span of 6 games the bullpen only had to enter the game before the 7th inning only twice.

With all the consternation over finding another starter, I’m still not seeing it. Is the rotation perfect? No, but it hasn’t been perfect for a while. But it’s still not this teams greatest need. As of right this instance, the areas of concern are:

1. Offense
2. Bullpen
3. Rotation

And lately the offense and bullpen have been bouncing back and forth juggling between the first and second spots on that list. But who knows tomorrow. I think the Cardinals (or maybe it’s just Pujols?) have historically had success in PNC, and while I know there’s really no basis for that success or that it will continue, there’s always the chance they’ll put up 8 runs tomorrow.

Anyway, I just don’t think it’s justifiable to keep calling out the starting pitchers when they’re clearly the strongest/most consistant aspect of this team.
