meaningless data dept: the cardinal offense has almost no day/night split so far this season --- they've scored 4.6 runs a game at night, 4.4 runs a game in the daylight. the pitching staff has gotten much better results at night, allowing 4.2 runs/game then as opposed to 4.7 runs/game in bright sunshine. despite being outscored 141-151 in day games, the cards are 4 games over .500 (18-14). . . . . .
the cardinals are still looking for their first series win of the month.

that is true. I just don't know if anyone wants to get into that.
Which is sad. I think Bonds should be at least respected, even with the steroid stuff.

I would be happy if the Cards went there
the biggest headache he would give me is figuring out where Tony would bat him, 2nd or 4th

heck
isn’t his agent saying that bonds would sign a minor league deal? sign him up, put him in memphis for a few weeks and if he mashes then give him a shot.

Man, Bernie does it again!
There are in-house options, including young starters, and you could do a lot worse than Brad Thompson as a No. 5 guy in the rotation.
He is in love with Brad Thompson! It truly is amazing to me that he keeps calling for that.

He walks way too many people
and is prone to the gopherball.
by Hardcore Legend on Jul 10, 2008 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions
But as a spot starter, I don't think he's significantly better or worse than our other in house options
when you consider that Garcia/Boggs will likely have their development stunted a bit by a turn in the rotation.
They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...
But he specifically names Brad Thompson over and over again
this is like the 4th column in a row he’s done it. It’s like he throws out ‘young starters’ without actually paying attention to who they are as a cover and then goes…..”Well, ya know…there is Brad Thompson. Did I mention Brad Thompson? Brad Thompson, you can do worse than that guy.”
by Hardcore Legend on Jul 10, 2008 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions
He deserves a shot.
He has served this organization well the last few years cleaning up other people’s trash. When he starts he is serviceable and the only way he can get better is to start more.
Thompson should be our 5th starter until we come up with a different option.
Ok, I came up with a different option
Mitchell Boggs
Jamie Garcia
Anthony Reyes
Now we can move Brad out of that #5 slot.
by Hardcore Legend on Jul 10, 2008 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Really?
Garcia is an asset and should not be screwed with just because we are in a pinch. He is a year or more away, then I want to see him in the bullpen, then he can start.
Boggs – How is that different than Thompson?
Reyes … unless it is a showcase for an impending trade, I don’t want to see him again. He has had enough chances.
Those 3 are not options that should get in Thompson’s way.
As sad as this is to say
Boggs is a better pitcher than Thompson.
Reyes is a better pitcher than Thompson as well, chances really don’t matter. Same could be said for Thompson.

He’s big, so when he gets into one it gets out of the ballpark. He brings nothing else to the table. At all. Yet he kills the Cardinals…
Hardly
I wouldn’t call the third row right down the left field line a “bomb.” It was probably 350-360 feet.

Fair enough
And hopefully, we’ll see a healthy Carp and Wainwright push him out of the rotation soon enough. But for now, he’s a servicable stopgap.
They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...
That's true
but when this team has such a small margin for error it gets frustrating watching Looper.

How can you bash looper when every days you were waiting for Mulder?
Lets just be consistent. If this were yesterday it would be called a “great success”
Its not good, not bad, just average for the guy. The real problem is the offense just isn’t getting it done.
Except Mulder was recovering from twice repaired
shoulder. Looper is healthy.

It has been coming for longer than that.
His average game is getting much worse. Someone can look up the stats, but he is just losing something. Perhaps batters are adjusting to him.
Remember when Albert Pujols used to hit
and carry our team like Ryan Howard is for the Phillies now. Oh, those were the days.

That's what happens when...
Utley hits in front of you and Pat Burrell having a career year hits behind you.
it seems like this team needs a break....
maybe after the all star break they pick it up
Rick Ankiel could throw out Chuck Norris. Easy.

Crazy Trade Idea
I want to throw out a discussion I had with another fan recently and see what everyone thinks. Kind of crazy but fun to talk about. Jimmy Rollins had an MVP year last year, but other than that he has a career line of an above average MI guy with great speed and a little power. Check out the seasonal averages. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?playerId=4258
Philly has an unproven young pitcher, a veteran pitcher who is about to be on Social Security, and a 40 year old reliever who just went on the DL. All are questionable for the future. If we packaged something like Ryan, Perez, and a third, would Philly even talk?
Rollins has a two years left, so it wouldn’t necessarily be a rent a player deal, and there have been a couple of times when he and Manuel have had some public disagreements. How crazy is the idea?
