Wainwright setback?

Last night on the ESPN broadcast Dave O'Brien referred to a "setback" in Wainwright's road back. He claimed he was cleared to throw (as we know), but he tried and couldn't get a good grip on the ball and was going to shut it down for a while longer.

Did anyone else hear this?

No coverage in the post-dispatch this morning that I can tell...I"m hoping O'Brien had false information, but perhaps Mo and co. are muzzling the St. Louis media outlets on this bit of news (trying to maintain that Waino and Carps returns will be like trades)

No setback, if Bernie is to be believed.

And it was Orel who said it on the broadcast, FWIW.

Orel went into a lot of detail

for the report to be false. Experience (Rolen, Edmonds, Carpenter, Mulder, Clement, Johnson, Kinney, etc., etc. etc.) tells me he got the real scoop from a player before the club hushed things up. It would hardly be the first time our “crack” medical staff was overly optimistic. Is it me or do the Cards have the worst history in baseball in regard to getting injured players back at pre-injury performance? How does Paletta keep his job?

I had the same thought

Which is why I qualified with “if Bernie is to believed.” I suppose it would be more accurate to say, “if Bernie’s source in the organization is to be believed.”

It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if the Cards are covering up a setback, but what can we do? It’s not as if we can do anything but speculate. The unfortunate situation of the fan is that we subject ourself only to as much inside information as we’re given freely, and no more.

I’ll continue to expect that Wainwright is fine, and then be totally unsurprised if he isn’t. That’s my attitude with the Cardinals medical staff any time they say someone is healthy.

They said on FSN last night

that Goold talked with Wainwright and everything is fine.
Leach also says that the report was false and Wainwright threw within the last couple of days.

So it would have to be a vast conspiracy. All the way to the Wagonmaker himself.

Right Now

On FSN, Dan mentioned that report and said, “well, we have right here the official team report, and Wainright threw yesterday and feels great.”

Ahh

I missed Orel’s statements and think I just heard O’Brien allude to it briefly during the broadcast….

Leach says Mo told him it’s false, but why should we for any reason believe anything Mo (or anyone else in the cards org) says.

even Wainwright said it was false

Well

I guess that if Kenny Rogers doesn’t know a “clump of dirt” is firmly stuck to his pitching hand palm during multiple playoff series, then maybe Wainer doesn’t know his finger is hurt?

How naive you all are...

it’s not a question of ‘knowing his own hand’....the front office could have advised him to keep quiet….

or maybe

a journalist is hyping a fake injury. Why do you assume that it is waino and mo that are lying, but will beleive some random third party blindly?

I'm really amused by your level of skepticism

Since I’m not a conspiracy theorist, enlighten me: why would they make Wainer lie about an injury?

It's the Cubbies and Brewcrew

They are getting the word out that Wainer is having problems so when we are working a deal for our new pitcher the club we are dealing with will demand more since they think we have less. That my friends is a conspiracy theory I will buy into.

how was it derogatory?

I was implying that he and westcoastbirdwatcher are a lot alike, ie – their conspiracy theories towards the Cardinals pitching staff / injuries.

Thanks for playing though.

Thank you Azru

Rac has such a narrow perspective, and a short memory, Not a very good witness to conspiracies theories.

More evidence of a Cardinals conspiracy

:-)

Despite Mo, Leach, Strauss, Bernie, and, indeed, Wainwright himself, denying that a setback occured, I ask you all to listen to yesterday’s espn podcast edition of “baseball today”, which includes an interview with Tony LaRussa.

TLR refers to Wainwright having a medical examination, and he understands he needs to slow down a little (or soemthing like that – I listened to it last night). While he still projects him in early August, there is a clear (if coy) indication by Tony that there was a hiccup…Peter Pascaralli before the interview refers to this indication.

I think this interview was taped before the mulder start (probably the same time Orel was getting his word). After this, there could have been an effort on the part of the front office to mute this discussion and re-emphasize the rosy, “everything’s fine”.

Honestly, with the experiences we’ve had with Carp, Rolen, Mulder, etc. how is this such an unbelievable consipiracy??
