PLEASE DO SOMETHING
The cardinals are currently sliding down slowly and with the brew crew trading for sabathia and cubs getting harden we need to make some sorta move
Whether its in the bullpen, middle infield, or anywhere A leftly in the pen would help alot with on vallone out there and he's not doing his job to well on getting out his priority in lefties then also a consistent bat or one with some pop
Run production is low and we need help through the whole lineup not just pujols, ludwick, and ankiel
Any Suggestions?!?!?

Tony LaRussa agrees with you..
You know If it weren’t for The NL West being so bad and the Rockies feeling like they’re stil in it…I think we could have had a chance to get Holliday…but I doubt they will trade him right now since they are still in it.
I really don’t see how we can get an “impact bat” right now with so many teams still in contention…and the ones that are not ..don’t have a viable “impact bat” worth trading someone like Rasmus for. Of course there is a guy sitting at home right now with the last name of Bonds that wouldn’t cost us any prospects….................

I’m sry but Bonds is the 1 person i wouldnt want to see here
yes he’s the #1 homerun king but there would be to much media and how fresh could he be after sitting on his couch for a long time

I have read in many places...sorry don't have any links right now.
that Bonds as been training…for “just in case”. Bonds to me would be a last resort….but right now I don’t know of any power hitters that are available. And if our offense keeps this pace of 2-3 runs per game something needs to be done soon…..that is is we are going to be serious contenders.

i don't see any need for knee-jerk reactions
maybe a little bullpen help but nothing we’d have to sell the farm for
Rick Ankiel could throw out Chuck Norris. Easy.

They did do something, called up Jaime Garcia for additional lefty BP help, so we’ll get a look Thursday if he pitches in relief.
I like the idea for an iterim move, but hes been terrible in 4 of his last 10 outings and mediocre in two of those. Been hammered by lefties, pitching with runners on and behind in the count.
Maybe there are some deals they can do to help close te gap without breaking the farm. Deal Lohse while the irons hot to a team looking for a vet going into the second half and PS, he’s not coming back in 09.
Get a good league ready young arm or MI bat and let Piniero, Loop, Wellemeyer, Thompson, possibly Franklin and Boggs hold down the fort until Wainwright and Carpenter can come back. If they cant come back, be glad Lohse was dealt for something.
Wolf likes SD, wants to resign with the Pads and has most MW teams blocked in trades.

Randy Wolf?
I’d like to see the Cards go after him, probably wouldnt’ cost all that much. The Pads are desperate for Outfield help, who we have a glut in.
Otherwise, a similar deal to getting a Piniero, Weaver, Hitchcock, Finley, Woody, et al would be just fine.

To go along with this (instead of making a new fan post)
Something tells that with Tony pleading with Mo & DeWitt to the press about trading for some help…he is hinting that if Mo & Dewitt doesn’t open dewallet or make a trade to help the team get into the playoffs, Tony is leaving town after the season for good. Yes I will make a bold prediction…if the Cards fail to make the playoffs this year Tony will be done as the Cards manager. Even Shannon has been hinting at this over the last couple of weeks. And if Mo & DeWitt fail to trade for an impact player or two Tony will use this as a reason for not coming back.

Recall the consensus was 08 to retool for 09. The wins have been surprising, but I would hate to deal the bright future for a murky present.
TLR’s no fool. If he wishes to go, he will do so. My sense is that 09 could be a lot of fun, and that LaDunc will wish to be a part of the good times. . .

Yeah...or
Maybe Tony thought they could actually do something this year. There were reasons to think so.
1) Wainwright was finally a full-time starter, and a darn good one.
2) Looper was in his 2nd year of full time starting, so should be able to hold up longer.
3) Lohse is an innings eater.
4) He got Reyes sent down, which he wanted, and Duncan stayed up, which he wanted.
5) He had 5 outfielders to use his platooning ways and 4 middle infielders to do the same.
6) He got rid of two veterans that he had no more use for and was feuding with (well, at least one feud)
7) He figured that the injury bug couldn’t quite hit as badly as last year! (It did.) 22 of 25 opening day players were on the DL last year.
8) He supposedly had Clement, Mulder, and Carpenter coming back in consecutive months before, around, and after the All-Star Break.
That’s a lot of good reasons to think that your team could contend. Add that to the fact that the Central hasn’t been great competition the last few years, and you’ve got very compelling reasons to think you could win the division.

I don't understand why...
there is such an urgency? The Cardinals were leading the Wild Card by slim margins before Sabathia was traded. The Cardinals are still leading the Wild Card after Sabathia and Sheets have both pitched. You have to remember that those aces will only have an influence on 16 or so games for the rest of the year (unless the Brewers let CC pinch hit – career .286 hitter with 2 hr and 7 rbi). We have played even with the Cubs since Wainwright went down to injury, so I look at Wainwright as our ace acquisition to match up with the Cubs and Brewers moves.
I do agree on the need for a LOOGY, but Pittsburgh is in a different situation with Capps out until Sept. and I don’t think the Royals are looking to move Mahay without some decent return. As long as the West continues to allow the Rockies to see glimpses of light at the end of the tunnel they will not be major sellers (Fuentes).
This isn’t time to panic. There are still a few weeks until the deadline and there are times to let the contenders contend and the pretenders realize their actual situation and become sellers.

Interesting Idea
I think we need a bat more than any pitcher and I would love to make a run at Holliday.
However here is an idea for a bullpen arm that will play a factor for many years. What about Brett Myers. Evidently he was not happy about the Phillies moving him to the starting rotation. He was quite dominant as a closer but is now blocked by Lidge. I’ve read where there might be some bad blood between Phillies management and Myers about the entire situation. I know he has had a terrible year as a starter but i think he would make a great closer. We all know most likely Izzy is gone after the year and then Myers can close and we can use Franklin/Perez next year as set-up guys (giving Perez some more experience—closer is the last position you want to rush someone into). Myers just seems content on being a reliever for rest of his career, and the Phillies dont have the value for him in that role.
What would it take? I’m not for sure, dont know how much the Phillies value him. They have always liked Reyes, so I’m thinking Reyes and an outfield prospect, maybe a little bit more. Defintely think this would be a trade exploring.
by stl3bagger on Jul 10, 2008 10:51 AM EDT 0 recs
a reason not to?
How about the fact that he’s half crazy? He was a dominant closer for what, two months? He hasn’t shown the ability to get anyone out as a starter this season, so I’m not sure he be much help here—why give up a prospect for a guy that we really don’t need. K-Mac and izzy have been pretty decent lately, what is needed is a lefty reliever who can throw an inning here and there and get hitters from both sides of the plate out.

Why Holliday?
What does he really solve? We have two outfielders right now that have 19 and 18 homers apiece, so they’re not coming out of the lineup for Holliday. That leaves Skip, who is the only legit leadoff guy that the Cards have and has been doing a fine job of it lately. Sure, Holliday is a superstar and I’d love to have him too, but we’re not going to get him without giving up Colby Rasmus, and he’s a cost-controlled, stud CF for the next 6 years. We have two good trading chips—Brian Anderson and Colby, and the Rockies have Iannetta who was a better prospect than Anderson behind the plate only a year ago.
I’m not about selling off the future for a shot at making the playoffs this year, and I don’t think adding Matt Holliday makes us that much better a ballclub. He certainly doesn’t make this team better than the Cubs or Brewers, so what exactly is the point? We’d need two good arms and MI that can hit his way out of a paper bag to catch up to those rosters, but we have a whole lot better future that both of those teams if we stand pat and look to upgrade weaknesses at the deadline or in the offseason.

The only
I completely agree, the things that makes sense to me, is better production from either second, or short, and an arm. Hopefully we can pick up a starter, and a decent mid reliever, for a rasmus,garcia,todd,mortensen-less trade. IMO Thos are the only 4 it would bother me to see trade, I even have a little reserve on hoff-power butt we’ll never see him up in the majors unless its for another team.

I know the A's have screwed us in the past
But I thought I seen a “rumor” yes a rumor, sorry for the sensitive people it passes time. Anyways, I seen something about Justin Duchscherer maybe being available, he might not be now that harden was delt. But this dude is dealing right now, and I think would be a better move than Harden since he’s constantly injured. Just an opinion though, take it lightly maybe share your thoughts?

I'd
rather have Duchsherer than Harden, and I’ve said this before—he’s been great in whatever role the A’s put him in, and he’s only been hurt once in his career. He’s a guy you can count on to be pretty good…

This is why
I’m not for sure how anyone can say that Holliday wouldn’t help this team. We have three outfielders playing above their career norms (Ankiel may be excluded—who knows what is norms are). I highly doubt Ludwick and Skippy can keep up thier current numbers. Holliday is a basher that every pitcher fears. So we get Holliday in left, Ankiel in center, and Ludwick in right. I would take that. Trade skip for something, but he’s not that valuable. Then let Ludwick lead off. No reason why he cant. He’s not all that slower than Skippy, and its not like Skippy is stealing every game either.
Name me 5 outfielders in the majors you would rather have on your team other than Holliday? I honestly can only think of one maybe, Sizemore.
Holliday would help this team greatly. Even if, and its a big if, Rausmus comes to the squad next year you can have Holliday in left, Rasmus in center, Ankiel in right with Ludwick as 4th outfielder. That has a chance of being the best OF in the national league.
I agree we need help at SS or 2nd base but name the player we can get that would have more of an affect this year than would be getting Holliday. I dont think that player exists.

None of this
addresses how acquiring Holliday would make the team any better. You argue that Luwick and Skippy will drop, but don’t address how Holliday would avoid a drop when he leaves Coors Field. Let the guffawing commence, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Ludwick put up better numbers than Holliday if both played everyday as a Cardinal.
Holliday is due $13.5M next year, so there goes the money to help areas we actually need to improve upon.
If we need another OF, then bring up Colby. I don’t understand how we can have 10 guys make their MLB debuts and Colby is still in Memphis. Evan Longoria and Jay Bruce have certainly helped their respective teams.

this post is exactly
what NOT to do…. panicked reactionary trading to ‘upgrade’. Without a realistic trade target or goal. With short term fixes in mind. To compete with the trades recently made by competitors. On-up-manship. Tony seems to have bought into it, but fortunately Mo seems to be saying all the right things about not mortgaging the future for a rent-an-arm.
DOn’t mean to be overly critical of the poster – but unless there is a legitimate and specific target that has a good chance of really improving the team…...

Holliday is a legit target considering he is signed through the end of ‘09 which gives rasmus even more time if needed and a possibility to re-sign him longer if not he helps us for a yr and a half and he wouldnt break the bank he’s signed to a 2 yr 23 million deal
He would be a huge pick-up

this reminds me of a few things...
... first, the old political maxim (applicable to nearly every issue):
1. we must do something
2. ‘x’ is something
3. we must do ‘x’
second, the South Park Underpants Gnomes strategy:
1. steal underpants
2. ?
3. Profit!
there is no easy move for the Cards. more than likely the best strategy is to stand pat or maybe tweak a bit on the margins and hope to get lucky and sneak into the playoffs. all while realizing that this team is much better positioned for an extended run of excellence in ‘09-’11 than it is in ‘08. if we get into the playoffs this year, that’s icing. but the cake is coming in the next few years.
yes, we could sell off our farm system for Burnett or Holliday. but it is still questionable that we’d make the playoffs this year even with a deal like that, and we’d severely hamper our chances of making it in the next few years.
a minor improvement like getting some bullpen help or adding a mid-rotation starter might improve the team by a couple of wins, and that might propel us into the playoffs (tho likely not; the Brewers were playing much better ball than us before they got Sabathia, and the Cubs have been out-pacing us without Harden or Soriano), but it’d be a gamble with a low probability of paying off. meanwhile, we’d be trading 12 or 18 cost-controlled years of prospects (say Burnett costs Boggs, Mather, & Jay or something) for a two-month rental when we’ve got a pretty small chance of making it to the playoffs even if we make such a deal.
plus it would damage our ability to make future trades which will improve the club long-term. if we deal all our prospects now, then we are incapable of trying to get Hu from the Dodgers, if they re-up Furcal or acquire Wilson, or of adding bullpen depth in the off-season. if we’re going to make a trade, it must be focussed on more than just picking up an extra win or two in the last two months of this season. the long-term viability of the club is much more important.

Can never go wrong with the Underpants Gnomes
and for the record, I’m pretty sure the first step in the Three-Phase Business Plan was “Collect Underpants”.
Potato, Potatoe…..but I digress.
But I believe kindred is correct in being concerned with what the overall effect of a trade would actually be, and anything less than guaranteeing a spot in the World Series is simply not good enough. And frankly, there isn’t a trade out there that really does that.
Now, if you are looking at simply shoring up a weakness or maybe two so the whole thing doesn’t completely fall apart and that trade or acquisition really doesn’t hinder any long-term aspects, then I’m all for it.
