Technically

because Bourn slid into the side of the base, wouldn’t that be considered ‘turning’ towards second and thus making the slide through the bag void?

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 8, 2008 4:04 PM EDT reply actions

I thought you were right

but I found this wording (7.08©):

“A batter-runner cannot be tagged out after overrunning or oversliding first base if he returns immediately to the base”

I don’t know if returned immediately but you can clearly slide past it.

by enoscountry on Jun 8, 2008 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

No

if he misses the base he might have got an “out of the baseline”

Also,

Ludwick is not a good fielder. He’s had spots of brilliance in an otherwise seemingly lost position on the poor lad.

it is nice to watch a game in 75 degree climate controlled stadium when it’s 97 and 100 percent humidity outside. But thast being said the dementions suck the craford boxes are stupid theres no reason for a hill and a flag pole in the field of play

quite the shoulder lickin’ hero in this game.

Nice play.

Look at Brendan Ryan

such ‘still’ hands. Look at the way he ‘glides’ to the ball. So ‘smooth’. So ‘effortless’.

if only he dove for those easy balls to his right...

instead of fielding them standing up. Then everyone would consider him the Best SS Evar ;)

Lee looked genuinely surprised to find that ball in his glove.

He had time to eat a sub sandwich in the time that ball stayed in the air. Talk about a major league pop-up.

I think we should start using the Cardinals medical staff

buzz words in game situations.

A quick, sharp pick = impingement
A routine fly ball = mild irritation
Error = Tightness in joint.

That joint/area can be Left shoulder = SS, Right Shoulder =2B, Right Elbow = 1B, Left Elbow = 3B, Groin = Catcher, Abdomen = Pitcher

Lohse and Franklin

for David Price?

The Rays GM

would actually kick Mo in the junk if he offered that trade. Price is a future Ace.

Well

That was some sweet sarsaparilla out of Franklin to close out the game. Surprisingly Easy, Nice, Refreshing, and Smooth, with a side of sweetness because it was against the ‘stros in a come from behind victory to take the game and the series. 4-4

Checking the draft tracker...

Scott Gorgen RHP from Irvine
Ray Asaro RF from Irvine
Jared Bradford RHP LSU pitching in the game for LSU (3ip, 1k, 4h, 1r so far)

by liam on Jun 8, 2008 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

After I turned it on

Irvine exploded on Bradford, putting up six runs in the inning before he coaxed a well-turned DP ball.

Bradford just got Asaro out on a Baltimore Chop to 3rd.

and to be treated to robin williams ripping on and everyone else in the room. priceless

Did that game feel to anyone else

like the flipside of last Monday’s game against the Pirates? Another series-ending contest, a starting pitcher for the home team seemingly coasting to a win (Wainwright for us vs. the Bucs, Rodriguez for them today), then crumbling in the 7th with a lot of two-out mistakes. It’s almost as if the baseball gods said they wanted the Cards to win last Monday and lose today; the mortals on earth got it wrong; but the result was the same.

by briangunn on Jun 8, 2008 5:14 PM EDT reply actions

except the Pirates had a grand slam and the Astros just handed us the game today

btw, I used to work with someone named Brian Gunn. do you live in Chicago?

hope he represented the name well, though

by briangunn on Jun 8, 2008 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Absolutely

and the seemingly effortless 9th for Franklin was the icing on the cake.

by liam on Jun 8, 2008 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed

I’d love to believe Thursday night was a blip for Franklin as closer – rather than something we’ll see regularly (read: Izzy)

to the cardinals, maybe...

the astros and pirates might disagree.

I’m just shocked the GOB didn’t punish us for pulling the best reliever on the team in favor of a lefty-lefty matchup featuring a lhb with no real L-L splits and a LHP with a significant reverse split. Then again, the GOB are fickle; they may have punished us in April for something they knew TLR would do in may.

Let us hope.

FWIW

The 2007 Cardinals didn’t get to 38 wins until July 4th.

A good read on our "All Draft Team" over at Future Redbirds

Clement’s line for the SCards tonight: 5ip 7h 6r 3er 3bb 2k 1hr

Im more interested in his velocity

At this point. His ability to get batters should come back if he is healthy and gets a consent delivery.

by Evilfrog on Jun 8, 2008 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

His defense didn't do him any favors

Holy Shit.

Tyler Greene just went all Elijah Dukes on Arkansas. Seriously.

The S-Cards were down 6-2, climbed back. Brian Stavisky (who went to the same very small high school as Josh Kinney) homered in the top of the tenth to put Arkansas up by a run.

Tyler Greene comes back in the bottom of the tenth to hit a walk-off, 3-run shot.

Awesome. Hopefully Derrick’ll get the poop on Clement’s velocity again.

if tyler greene finally put it all together

that would be huge. Please, GOB, let this be the moment it clicks…

if it can happen for theriot and derosa, it can happen for greene, right?

didn't know this

but Skippy leads the league in average with RISP (I think it’s .394). Who woulda thought he’d be our best clutch hitter?

by Cards Fan in Chitown on Jun 8, 2008 10:24 PM EDT reply actions

so like, juan pierre is 2nd

think we could trade skip to LAD for something useful, based on a sample size of 41 AB’s?

BTW, using that statistic, Albert Pujols is worse than Aaron Boone. And Joe Mather is hitting .600.

I take umbrage with this sentiment:
La Russa had a sheet on his desk Sunday morning with the starters mapped out through July 7. Brandishing it, he pointed out all of the blanks.

“Can’t fill in the gaps until you’re certain,” he said.

The wild card is Pineiro, who could help fill in some blanks. Rookie Mitchell Boggs will start Tuesday in Wellemeyer’s place, certainly filling one of the gaps. The next blank is Thursday in Cincinnati, Wainwright’s scheduled start. The Cardinals’ options are limited if Wainwright is unavailable, and McClellan is arguably the best alternative.

How is McClellan arguably the best alternative? I can think of 3. Firstly, Todd Wellemeyer. That’s the hints we’ve been getting, that he will miss his turn in the rotation but not the entire rotation. Second, spot start Anthony Reyes. I assume that the reason that they think McClellan is the best alternative is that someone would have to be sent down in order to make room for option #2 or option #3 (Jamie Garcia).

But, as LaRussa says, McClellan will only be moved into the rotation as a longterm thing. If that’s the case, then that means that Wainwright would have to be DL’d anyways. So, then you could still play the Memphis Shuttle game and use either Reyes or Garcia on Thursday instead of burning up your bullpen by a)taking someone out of it to start and b)using a starting pitcher that is on an extreme pitch count.

I’m hoping that is simply Goold’s editorial comment and not the actual thinking of the mangers office. They’ve already shortened the bench enough this year by riding out injuries on guys (Ankiel) or carrying awful fucking players (Kennedy). No need to completely destroy the bullpen as we go into the toughest part of our schedule. Remember, when you have a shaky or bad rotation as 2007 showed us, it is paramount you have an extremely strong bullpen. We don’t have that and if we keep robbing Peter to pay Paul, all we will be left with is the grizzled vets that give up loud outs.
