Game 65 Open Thread -- June 8, 2008
Wandy Rodriguez is a pretty tough customer. We roughed him up pretty good about a week and a half ago but that was his first start coming off the DL. Over last year and his first 34 IP this year, he’s given up fewer H than IP, has a BB/9 of 2.99 and has averaged 7.73 K/9. Pretty stout! He’s also always been much better in the Juice Box than on the road – career 4.25 ERA at home vs. 5.82 on the road. Last year the difference was 2.94 at home and 6.37 on the road and it’s a trend that has continued over his first 6 starts this year. If we’re going to win another series against the Astros, we’re going to have our work cut out for us. The good news is that Lohse has been outstanding of late – yielding just 1 BB, 1 HR, and 4 ER over his last 23 IP. Could be a pitchers’ duel today.

Nice lineup today
Seems like La Russa is on a Mather/Barton kick. I like it, it infuses some speed and line drive pop into the lineup. Of course any lineup sans Kennedy looks good, IMO
Lineup
B. Ryan ss
J. Mather cf
A. Pujols 1b
R. Ludwick rf
T. Glaus 3b
Y. Molina c
B. Barton lf
K. Lohse p
A. Miles 2b
I smells ‘runs’.
that might possibly be
the best offensive lineup possible at this point.

Can we please get to that 15 over threshold?
We’ve shown we are pretty good at getting to 10 over, but they next barrier for a team to achieve is that 15 game barrier. We seemingly can’t build towards that number, especially against this weak schedule.
Hope Loshe gets that call
About 4 inches inside

He still seems to be following a pattern so what
Get ahead with a fastball low in the zone, get them to two strikes, that start throwing that sloppy curveball to get them to chase. It’s a good gameplan.. I just hope the Cardinals recognize it and adjust.

Boy, Tim will call those ones inside a foot off the plate
but that one right down the middle gets no call?
We are going to have to score a lot of runs tonight because the Astros are likely to light up Lohse.
Well, maybe not if Tejada is going to swing

ESPN half the time doesn't even show highlights of Cards games
I had ESPN on for a couple of hours last night for background noise and didn’t see a highlight of the game last night. This was ESPN News btw.
That happened to me one night
Are we the only team they do that to?
Bad idea
how many times are we going to ruin the bullpen to fix the rotation? We have other starters in Memphis that can fill the void for awhile.

well the good thing is..

they said it would only happen

* sarcasm might be involved in this comment
Only makes sense
If we lose one of those there’s little chance of making the offseason. Might as well get McClellan prepared to start next year.
I like it
He has the stuff to be a starter, and they said if the move is made it would be for the whole season.
I like the move of calling up Garcia or keeping Boggs in the rotation better, but I can understand wanting to get him more time in AAA.
The way I look at it is that it opens up a bullpen space if/when Izzy comes back and is effective. I like the idea of KMac in the rotation later on in the season more than Looper/Thompson/Clement/Mulder..
All that being said, I hope neither injury to Welley or AW is serious, since they made it sound like only a serious injury to one of those would be the reason for putting KMac in the rotation.

now that is damned funny

Besided Ludwick just really likes chik-fil-a and wanted to make sure he got a really good look at the fowl pole.
His height
He barely needs to run, just has to reach over.
Dude’s 40 foot high, and shoots lightning bolts from his arse.
Why not Barton?
I guess in THIS park you need a strong arm in CF, but usually you put top speed there.

At first I wasn't real crazy about Rooney but he has really grown on me
and now miss him dearly when guys like Claibourne and Horton are in the booth with Shannon
Off topic -
anyone here know about why Youkillis and Manny had a dust up in the dugout a few days back? After poking around at overthewall.com, I came to realize that this group of baseball savants would probably be better authorities to appeal to.
i heard youkilis was screaming about getting out like he always does
and manny was like just let it go so he flipped out on him
kinda crazy they lose picture here

That happens
I always think of the scene in Airplane! when the runway lights go out and they cut to Steven Stucker’s character holding the plug for it. “Just kidding!”

lohse started nibbling to tejada and berkman
because he was so concerned about the run at third base. should have been aggressive. But that’s easy for me to say sitting here on my couch.
A friend of mine who's a reds fan
Talked a lot about that being Loshe’s problem. When the cards picked him up, he said he’s got filthy stuff, but if runners get in scoring position he’ll let it snowball and give up some huge hits.

Assuming we can stay in the wild card race
The Marlins are going to be tough competition…they are crushing the Reds 9-1.
It’s amazing how that team can be so good with the lowest payroll in baseball…wish we had their scouts.
Plus they lost their best hitter (Cabrera) and still are playing great baseball
It’s a shame they can’t get anybody to come see them play…Miami doesn’t deserve to have a team in my opinion.
Out of curiosity
Who is pitching for the Reds?

Can't remember where I read it
but apparently if Waino’s injury is serious, they are going to put K-Mac in the rotation.
I think that's a mistake
Parisi was pitching well until they put him in the rotation – I think it has to be terribly difficult to flip-flip between those two roles mid-season

The Card's offense looks terrible today
I don’t think Wandy’s stuff is as that good as the Cards are making it look, although it seems that his strike zone is a little more generous then Lohse’s

Not saying Wandy is horrible…but he’s not this good. We’re lucky we even have a hit today.
agree on infusion
but who from whom and who is expendable and of value. i’d say we could give up thompson, reyes, and either duncan or barton w/o losing our competitiveness (ak is unfortunattely a bogo in any trade), but who could be get for that group? uggla would be a nice fit, but not likely to happen, so, ????
If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, perhaps you haven't grasped the situation!
dunc
has more offensive potential, but i wonder if mather isn’t likely to be net ahead of him in the long run because if his better defense and overall speed. any trade needs to reduce the outfield logjam. 5 players who are effectively outfielders only and 4 middle infielder who are effectively infielders only is not a good formula in the nl.
If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, perhaps you haven't grasped the situation!
No, No he wasn't
major league
demonstration vs minor league potential is what i was referring to and what i think any major league gm would focus on who is looking for pitching now.
If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, perhaps you haven't grasped the situation!
but how can you say Duncan was better
Mather hasn’t been up but for a week?
* sarcasm might be involved in this comment
Still not quite right
Mather’s had 34 PA’s and he’s put up a .241/.353/.379 line with five walks, a double, and a home run.
In Duncan’s first 34 PA’s, he never walked once but homered three times for a .235/.235/.559 line. Mather’s power is very real and he could easily make up that difference in Cincinnati’s wind tunnel. Add in the better defense and I’d take Mather.
screw the 2005 late call up
just look at 2006, that’s what I was originally referring to.
Through June (42 PAs) he had 3 HRs and an OPS over 900
then you have to say screw
Mather’s first week up too. You can’t throw away Duncan’s start but not Mather’s
* sarcasm might be involved in this comment
The comparison in my mind was 2006
because it was the exact same situation – fine Duncan had an advantage because he came up in 2005. I’ll spot Mather 2 weeks and then you can make another comparison.
My thought was that in ‘06 both came up for struggling teams, because starters were hurt/struggling. Duncan came in and gave us a lot of help – I haven’t gotten that from Mather – except that he can hit Nat’s pitching.
Moving the goal posts
He had three home runs including that late call up and through his first 35 Major League plate appearances. (The last one in Busch II.)
He was two home runs better than Mather through his first 35 PA’s and Mather could make that up this week. I’d take Mather.

Even Tim McClelland had a shitty, inconsistent zone in the series we had with him.
it's almost lke they are begging
to be replaced by robots. Like at the big pre-spring-training umpire convention, they got together and said “ok guys, this year we’re going to blow every possible home run call, make a ton of questionable strike three calls and just in general be bad at our jobs. MLB will give us a nice severance package and we can watch the game down at the bar like everyone else”.
