Here's what I say about this game

Parisi was starting. Kennedy and LaRue were in the lineup. Schumaker made two horrible plays in center. Given all of those things happening, we lost by one run in extra innings? There’s no “blame” or “hero” or anything. It was a great effort from the whole team, just came up a little short.

Live from DC

As detailed on this blog recently, the premise for Franklin as closer is that Perez is not ready; and that holding Perez back while not preferable isn’t out of the ordinary for a young gun like him.

Tonight, after waiting in the pouring rain last night, and missing all but the last inning of the makeup because of work, and watching LaRussa’s young B-List Cardinal lineup battle back from 7-0 after 3, I saw Franklin lose this game with two very hittable fastballs that failed to fool or otherwise overpower a mediocre veteran and a failing youngin’.

If his treatment of Parisi and his starting lineup is any indication, TLR was fully prepared to lose the nightcap. His team showed some tenacity. I think they deserved to have Perez come in and throw those fastballs.

Cheers for Joey Mather; hell of an at-bat.

by DesiBird on Jun 5, 2008 11:37 PM EDT reply actions

+1 for sure

his team fooled him, he seemed dedicated to leaving parisi in no matter, then the team battled back and he had tom go for it and ate the bullpen. if he’d played to win from the beginning, might have made it (though pinch hitting worrell might not have crossed his mind).

still going with my original prediction that franklin will not be the closer when july rolls round

parisi still has his major problem between the ears. may need to go down, may not

If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, perhaps you haven't grasped the situation!

by sportsman on Jun 5, 2008 11:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I was there

And it just seemed like Schu was off in Center. Even when he made plays, he didn’t seem comfortable doing so. Which was odd outta him, guess he just had an off day. Luckily, he redeemed himself with the bat.

Also, I was honestly not that worried when Franklin came in. I expected him to allow a runner, but to get out of it and escape with his 2nd save of the day. When I was really terrified was when Flores stayed in and pitched to Dmitri Young and Lopez. I was hoping we’d get outta that, and could find a way to win.

I liked to see that the Cards never gave up, but in all honesty, I can’t say that that showing merited a victory. That was not a game that we shoulda won, nor that shoulda been that close.

Skip just isn't very good defensively...

at least not in center. he usually gets bad jumps on balls anywhere he plays, but it’s worse in center. He needs to be the late innings pinch hitter and never start or play in the field, IMHO.

Oh, forgot to say...

...Kennedy has no place playing major league baseball right now. He’s just plan terrible; and isn’t competing.

at this point, it goes without saying.

Cubs broadcast

Bob Brenely: “Fastball Away, that’s what I woulda called”
Dweeb with him: “Of course you would.”
Howry delivers the pitch and Kent hits his 2nd HR of the game to tie it 4-4

Nice call, Bob.

Dodger relievers

have given the Cubs about 3 games in the last week now.

Torre

doesn’t think to PH for a .172 weak hitting infielder – Hu already hit a triple that means he’s done for the week.

by enoscountry on Jun 6, 2008 1:10 AM EDT reply actions

Torre is not as good when he doesn't have an All-Star at every position

like he did in NY. I like Torre but he was in a unique position in NY where he didn’t have too many “tough” decisions to make as far as pinch hitters and such.

by KYCards on Jun 6, 2008 1:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed.

I think that managing the Dodgers will show just how good (or bad) Torre is. Was he as bad as he seemed with the Cards or was he as good as he looked with the Yankees. Stay tuned, folks.

Whatever

Cubs had to burn Marmol, Howry and Wood in a game they led 4-0. The three most overworked pitchers in baseball.

I still can't get enough of that Worrell HR

I said he swung like Uggla earlier. I was wrong. That was David Wright. He obliterated that ball.

Can he play 2B?

Mather is here to stay

Worrell won’t last….He’s not ready…...Pairisi isn’t a starter, he might loose his confidence even in long relief for a while. I don’t see this organization trying to make a move this year. They won’t spend a dime. They will try to cash in Lohse for an impact player. I would rather watch the kids play than suffer this Kennedy crap. There are too many weak players riding the starting pitching right now.

How is Worrell not ready???

He spent all of last year in AAA. Worrell might be the most ready of all the young relievers they’ve called up this year.

Mather/Franklin

I’ve been high on Mather for a long while, and right below this post at the top of the page were gut feelings about Franklin in the closer role…though Im sure many here had those same feelings. Obviously La Russa did’nt.

http://tiny.cc/i0d7c

Too bad Motte is derailing right now, we’re probably stuck with Franklin for a while.

by cardschinmusic on Jun 6, 2008 4:49 AM EDT reply actions

how does Motte fit into the equation

of us being stuck with Franklin? I just don’t understand why Perez isn’t given a chance. Great stuff, closer mentality, great stuff
