Goo Goo Goo Joob

I'm sure everybody's heard by now; Brett Wallace is the Cards' pick at #13. Kid can hit. Let's just hope he's a little more athletic than he looks.

Here's his MiLB draft page .

Most of the draft reports are pretty similar. Good hitter, bad body. I really do question whether or not he's going to stick at 3rd base, but he'll hit enough to be excellent trade bait even if he doesn't.

Overall, he reminds me a lot of Daric Barton with better power.

Melville and a whole lot of others still on the board.

If we can still pick up melville at what is it 37 or 39?

either way that would be great, I was hoping for a arm with the first pick. Don’t know much about wallace, hope hes as good as some are promoting, and he can stay at 3rd base

I'll be very happy..

if the Cardinals can take one of these guys at 37:
Shooter Hunt
Tim Melville
Jake Odorizzi
Zach Collier

I’ll be unhappy if they take:
Gerrit Cole
Tanner Scheppers

Don't think

you have to worry about Scheppers that soon. I could be wrong, but that injury is going to drop him much further than the 2nd round.

Wallace...

Is going to be a LOT better fielder than what they are saying about him…..I’m telling you?... this kid can just CRUSH the ball….and his D is only going to improve at this level… I LOVE this pick as it addresses one of the true weak spots in our organization… 3rd base/ and a 3rd baseman who can show some Power at that..

Technically every player in the draft is way underpaid even if you have to "overpay" relative to anyone else

If it takes 2 mil to sign the kid, he’s worth it in say the 4th round if we’re actually willing to pony up.

after hearing more about this Wallace kid I'm very excited

Focus Area & Comments

Hitting Ability: Wallace may be one of the best hitters in college. He’s got tremendous plate discipline and is a very tough out.

Power: He has power to all fields, with the ability to turn on inside pitches or go with outside pitches and hit them out.

Running Speed: Considering his size, he’s not a bad runner.
Base running: Wallace is a good base runner—he’ll even steal a base here and there thanks to good instincts.

Arm Strength: Despite some funky arm action, Wallace has above-average arm strength.

Fielding: He’s got good hands that should make him fine at first base as a pro.

Range: His range is limited and he’s got bad feet. His lower half should keep him limited to playing first.

Physical Description: Wallace has been described as a good athlete trapped in a bad body.

Medical Update: Healthy.

Strengths: One of the better bats in the Draft class with power to spare and outstanding plate discipline.

Weaknesses: His body will limit him defensively, though the bat should make up for it.

Summary: Drawing rave reviews for his work in the box, he’s one of the best hitters in college and perhaps in the entire Draft class. His unbelievable plate discipline will undoubtedly be attractive to some teams, though it’s unlikely he’ll play anything but first as a pro. He could be the kind of Major Leaguer who hits .300 with 25 homers and a high OBP annually.

Nats Game

In between games right now. Nice day at the ball park.

Miles played a surprisingly competent 3d. Glaus did just fine at 1st, with one nice snag.

I was surprised that Wally was pulled. He was pitching just fine, but I can’t complain about the Pujols pinch given the resulting dinger.

Mather had some nice at bats and looks really good in the field If the guy starts putting some lumber on the ball, it’s hard to see how Duncan gets back up. But, of course, Mather still lacks an xbh.

Good solid game against a really weak team. TLR thinks the Nat’s catcher sucks, so he’s giving the green light a lot. Makes for fun games.

by enoscountry on Jun 5, 2008 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Y'all are right, of course

Mather had the rbi double. Hasn’t had many (any?) xbhs before that though. But you gotta start somewhere.

As for Miles, he played a pretty solid game. I didn’t see anything in the first that I would call an error. You must be referring to the Milledge hit, because Guzman’s was a genuine hit. He made a number of nice plays though. Otherwise, 0 for 3 with a walk and a dp.

Lynn seems like a dime a dozen player.

On with the (good) youth movement!

by aet15 on Jun 5, 2008 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Lance Lynn

Lynn threw his fastball in the 88-90 mph range in this outing, though he’s been a tick faster than that in the past.
Fastball movement: He’s got some sink on the fastball.
Curve: He throws an average curve.
Changeup: His changeup also grades out as average.
Control: He really commands the strike zone well.
Poise: A good competitor, he really knows how to pitch.
Physical Description: Lynn is a big right-hander who is kind of built like Joba Chamberlain and will have to watch his conditioning.
Medical Update: Healthy.
Strengths: Excellent command, knowledge of how to pitch, outstanding makeup and competitiveness on mound.
Weaknesses: He doesn’t have a true out pitch, with average stuff across the board, and he’ll need to stay on top of his weight.
Summary: Lacking great pure stuff, Lynn is a level behind the elite college arms in this Draft class. But he makes the most out of his average offerings with excellent command, a knowledge of how to pitch and a real competitive streak on the mound. He’s done a good job of maintaining his weight this year and will have to continue to do so as a pro. He won’t wow you, but he’s the type who could be a solid innings-eater who presumably won’t take long to be big-league ready.

Heheh

I’m into college football recruiting, and I know that many times it’s very hit-or-miss. My team hardly ever gets all the 5-star recruits, or is ranked in the top ten in recruiting rankings. Yet we’ve been very successful over the past ten years because our coach knows what kind of kid he wants to recruit and doesn’t think about star ratings. It’s probably not the best analogy, but when Alabama brags about how many great recruits they get, then we beat them 6 years in a row, it really shows that he’s done a great job.

That's different from what he said to Ravech earlier

“How do you feel about being drafted by the Cardinals?”

“Well, I’m just glad to be drafted. I’ve watched Albert Pujols and TLR coached in Oakland, so I have great respect for the organization.”

That’s very loosely paraphrased, but it seemed to me like he didn’t care too much who drafted him. Maybe now that he’s had a chance to let it set in, he realized this is a good place for him.

About the "bad body"

I think that’s a bullshit way of looking at a ballplayer. Not everyone is going to be Rolen…and if the guy can hit and get on base, that’s great – more time to work on fielding in the minors. BTW, this whole draft is a crapshoot.

Andy Benes is the most successful pitcher ever drafted at #1 or something like that?

Lynn

Fastball has “some sink.”

Curveball is “average.”

Change “grades out as average.”

Why was he the 39th player drafted, and by the Cardinals? Don’t we usually hit the scrap heap for MLB veterans?

This is frustrating.

by bgh on Jun 5, 2008 5:54 PM EDT reply actions

as I mentioned above.....

Lynn pitched for the U.S. National Team last summer ….striking out 26 in 25 innings…and compiling a 2-1 -1.80 mark in four starts

He’s got great Up-side ..in my opinion.

It’s way to early to criticize the Card’s picks based on what a few analysts say about the pick.

by TheBirds on Jun 5, 2008 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions

To early?

I mean it only takes years to see baseball players develop and advance through the system. I’d say 10 minutes and a scouting report qualifies as enough time to pass judgement.

More than one scouting report

Cites an average repertoire, no out pitch, and needing to keep his weight down. However, there are discrepencies in his velocity that would make a bit of a difference. And his mentality is oft-praised as the bulldog-type competitor.

Still, an average repertoire, no out pitch, and a “slight sink” on his fastball would be right up LaDunc’s alley. That is, if they are even around after the years he spends in the system.

Wallace

he’s not more athletic. He’s probably less athletic. He’s not a 3B and a lot of teams aren’t even sure he’s a 3B. He’s 6’1” and 245. He can hit but, unfortunately, there’s no DH in the NL. This is a real missed opportunity for the Cards. Most are probably aware that we already have a 1B and almost nobody thinks Wallace can play LF. I guess we’ll find out! Hope the Cards can make up for this disappointing selection w/ some better ones later on.

Ryan Braun isn't a 3B, either

but the Brewers are fine with him in their line-up.

I wouldn't sell Wallace's athleticism short

Scouts consistently say he has good feet. My son’s team played ASU three games this spring and they say that not only can the kid rake, but he runs very well. He had two triples in a three game series.

Those Pilgrims ain't lookin' so proud now...

I disagree

The guy can mash. If Chris Duncan can be thrown in LF, then this guy can play there. He’s been working on “the body.” He told Bernie and Randy that he is down to 9% BF.

I’m going to watch ASU in the CWS, thats’ for sure. I’ll formulate an opinion from there. Hopefully ASU isn’t knocked out too early to get some info.

It was tongue in cheek and only regarding defense

The guy can mash. Worst case scenario we have to trade him to a team that can use him at first base. You think the Brewers are sweating that they don’t have a position for LaPorta?

He's not LaPorta

No one has even remotely suggested that he is LaPorta either.

And why do we look forward to trading away our first round pick - the 13th overall. We should look forward to him being an All-Star. Again, Wallace isn’t terrible but the Cards had an opportunity to select somebody w/ a higher upside than Wallace and they chose the safe pick - again. It’s disappointing. Hicks or Kelly would’ve been much better selections. They’d be less likely to make it to the show but the potential ceiling is much higher.

I don’t think they would draft this kid in this position unless they were pretty sure they wanted him to play 3rd. .....and his defense is not bad….it’s just not exceptional.. ...he’s in his early 20’s….and to me?..that means he CAN lose some weight and improve his defensive skills to match his already VERY good offensive abilities. I like the pick and am looking forward to getting him signed and playing.

by Timbo02 on Jun 5, 2008 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions

No scout sees Wallace as a 3B -- none!

No one doubts that Wallace can hit but is there anyone who can answer why the Cards passed on Hicks, Lawrie or Friedrich for this guy? He’ll be a good hitter and he’ll move quickly through the system but he was an overdraft. If nothing else, w/ Hicks on the board, he should have been taken before Wallace—ditto for Friedrich. There’s, at least, a decent argument for passing on Lawrie as he’s liable to end up behind the plate.

The Cards scouts must have seen him able to play 3rd….or WHY draft him?....for is bat alone?. I have to put a little more faith in the staff then that… He’s made 8 errors in 50 games at 3rd….has shown a decent arm and one scout said he had “nimble feet” for a guy his size.. Look it’s all a crap shoot at this point…..but I just happen to think the kid is going to be okay at the corner given a couple of years to keep working and learning

by Timbo02 on Jun 5, 2008 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

They passed on Casey Kelly as well

a guy w/ tremendous upside! Selecting Wallace was too safe - as Kozma was last year. He’ll hit and he’ll move through the system relatively quickly and few, IMO, will be disappointed in him - at least from an offensive standpoint. The problem is what we might have missed out on - a player such as Hicks or Kelly w/ a much higher upside. Disappointing. I could have stomached a “safe” pick if it had been a pitcher such as Friedrich. Wallace gives us another DH to stick in LF - hopefully, or to play 1B if we don’t resign Pujols in a couple of years. Disappointing.

by chuckb on Jun 5, 2008 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

All valid points....I grant you...

But Wallace was always projected as a top 20 talent….so I guess that might mean he’s considered a “safe” pick… and I just don’t see Hicks and Kelly having the offensive upside that Wallace does…. Hey? You’ve always shown to know your baseball HC….so I’m not saying you are wrong… I just think the pick was a good one…

Why all the hate for Lynn?

This guy has struck out 10.65 and 11.04 batters per 9 innings, and walked a little over 3 per 9 the last 2 years. He improved on everything but his hits and home run rates. Yeah, home run rates are pretty big, but I don’t know much about him, his league, or his compettion. All I know is, if this guy pounds the strike zone, strikes a ton of guys out, and no one knows how he does it, I like him.

I don’t really follow college baseball (mostly because Auburn is just god-awful in baseball despite having one of the best parks in the country) but I know that the SEC got at least 8, maybe 9 teams into the NCAA tournament.

Game theory on this sign/not sign out of high school

If you look at it from the endgame perspective that you either have major league talent or you don’t. If you do have the talent and you go to college, well you get drafted 3 years later anyway and you make the majors. If you have the talent and sign, well you make it to the majors maybe a year earlier if you are a total stud.

If you DON’T have the talent and go to college, well you end up getting your college education while getting the college experience (you couldn’t pay me enough money to make me miss out on all the fun). If you don’t have the talent and sign, well you waste 3-6 years of your life riding buses in nowhere cities in the low minors most likely with at least half the team in rookie ball unable to speak English.

Now that assumes the coaching is the same (personally I think you’re just as likely to get a terrible/great coach in college vs. pros), but to me unless you’re getting truly life changing money that you simply can’t pass up, it’s not even a question whether to sign or not…

One never knows what might happen in college maybe you blow out your arm and never see a second in pro ball, not to mention never getting a dime.

The future is now when you’re drafted out of high school. It’s a pretty complicated decision.
