Game 61 Open Thread 2.0
6-1, 3.16 4-5, 3.52
Alright, let's try this again. Same pitchers.
Pujols isn't in the lineup again today, and isn't expected to be for the nightcap either. Colour me a bit concerned over just how long this injury is going to linger. Between he and Ankiel, the Cards are playing with an awfully short bench. I just really hope it doesn't come back to bite them in the ass.
Draft coverage is below.

What concerns me
A doubleheader featuring Parisi starting in one of the games. The ‘pen could be stretched even further than normal today and tonight. Hopefully Parisi does better when facing the decimated Nats lineup.
Puts pressure on Welly
It’d be best if he went 7 or 8 strong innings.
Still, if he can’t go long I’d believe Tony’s willing to use the bullpen to win this first game, get the series win, and just see if we get lucky in the second.
Yes, we need a strong performance from the Colonel
Which he has been giving us as of late. Still, his control problems are a bit unsettling when dealt this type of hand and having him paired with a rook who is making his second ever big league start after getting shelled in his first.

wellemeyer’s may FIP was 3.75 if my fangraph crunching is correct, indicating that his may ERA of 2.19 was lucky. for personal correlation, compare his career 4.75 FIP against a 4.56 ERA. he ranks 25th in the NL in 2008 FIP, behind both lohse and wainwright. i still like what i’ve seen so far in 2008 much more than 2007, though, and i’ll always root for colonel shoulders!

Neat
There are only 5 people behind home plate.
Nice.
I have discovered in twenty years of moving around a ball park, that the knowledge of the game is usually in inverse proportion to the price of the seats. ~Bill Veeck
probably has something to do w/ the price
I understand those behind the plate seats are something like $350/seat (don’t quote me on the amount, but it’s something outlandish like that). There was an article in the Washington Post about it awhile back. The Nats seriously screwed up with their estimate of what DC folks would pay for those seats. I remember reading that they are more $$ than the equivalent seats at Fenway and Yankee stadium.

well that won't hurt his calf
i was about to complain about him being out there…buts that is best case scenario
Welley out already???
I dont get it with Parisi going tonight
UPDATE: I stand corrected
ESPN Management (CT): Umm…...what does this have to do with the Red Sox and Yankees?
SportsNation Jerry Crasnick: Management, Let’s take a break with the sarcasm, OK?
aw man
you guys ruin it for us on MLB.tv :)

dont use the 1.2
it lags something terrible >30 seconds behind the actual game. use the 800k, it works fine and doesnt lag all that much.
C'mon you Redbirds, lets prove em' wrong, again!

good tip
although I love the resolution of the 1.2 on my widescreen

Alright
Going to tonights game. Just curious, what do you think the lineup will look like. We don’t have a deep bench, but we also aren’t facing another lefty. Regardless I still hope to see some fireworks cuz with Parisi throwing… You never know.
funny...
i was sitting there thinking why remove welley? then i thought that pujols must’ve said “im going to hit a homerun if you put me in now.” then he hit one.

Justin Smoak is still on the board..
He’s arguably the best power hitter in the draft—better than Hosmer, etc.
and dawn the fred bird outfit
to get the kids entertained between innings.

Hmm
The Pujols HR is awesome
But now we have to get 3 innings out of our bullpen with Parisi going tonight. Not sure it was the right call to yank Welley after 79 pitches…

Does Flores have a shitty arm or something?

the announcers say the pitcher is leaving him out to dry
i think so too

We are getting some incredible jumps
on the pitchers today. Flores hasnt really had a chance.

Add me to the list of people thinking WTF about taking Welley out
He wasn’t even at 80 pitches; at the very least let him get into a little trouble in the 7th before yanking him.
(But the HR was nice and all….)
He'll be ready pretty soon, too
I wonder if that makes Alexei Ramirez available?

Carp saying the Cards don't run anymore
right after Ryan steals a base and Barton earlier – great analysis Bob!

He was saying this...
to show his surprise at TLR’s aggressiveness this series. It wasn’t really bad commentary.
an just called Looper our 2nd best starter....

FWIW
he also clarified that he was referring to what we “used to do” on the basepaths; a la whiteyball

still poor timing as they’re showing the replay of Ryan sliding in ;)

so much for him falling to the Cards
by Pitchers Hit Eighth on Jun 5, 2008 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions
I would have been surprised
had he fallen out of the Top-10…really had no hope for him coming to St. Louis. 89-93 Fast ball (in the Cape League according to K.Law; hit 97 in the All-Star game). Crazy arm action.
Cards pick 13....
no way he was going to fall that far, I’m with you…. I’m hoping that Shooter Hunt or Tanner Scheppers is around for them
sucks he's in the nl
but at least he’s not in the central…was scared the reds or asstros would take him
ok carpenter
how the hell do you figure that looper is one of our two best starters?
Losing is a disease
He only knows two of our starters?

so far the central has reached on two of its three picks
hope the cardinals don’t follow suit…bad pick
ESPN2 analysts
saying that after Castro, there was a HUGE drop off in the draft this year. That was probably the reason why he was selected there.
Draft
-Castro is a reach, he was predicted to be 16-20
-Smoak is still on the board, he was supposed to go top 5
-Scheppers will be around after the first round. The injury will keep him out of the first 30 picks.
-Don’t take Lawrie. Anderson is currently hitting .350 in AAA.
yeah, but that's still a reach...
...Castro has only one season as a propsect. His bust probability is fairly high. Not what I like to see in a top 10 pick. D.GOOCH
