Is there any precedent for a Zito-style

economic bath like the one the Giants are taking? I mean, has there ever been another contract so large and long-term that immediately turned sour with seemingly no possible exit for the franchise?

Three walks followed by a slam.

That won’t go over well for that pitcher. Even on the off-chance this game was still within reach, that pretty much does it.

yeah

best we can hope for is a series split, with cain beating marquis, dempster beating correia (what happened to the Correia we saw in April!), and Lincecum beating gallagher.

USA Today did a story about Mark McGwire

you can read it here

if he does become a coach soon, i hope it would be for the Cards. we need a new hitting coach like nobodies business.

I love how they try to make him sound like a recluse

“Mark McGwire lives at the end of a cul-de-sac in a gated community in Irvine, Calif., where the world is not permitted to see him.”

  • Something like half a million people live in gated communities at the end of cul-de-sacs in Irvine…
  • The comment from Selig is just despicable.
  • The cardinals need to unveil that statue regardless of whether Big Mac makes the HOF.
  • Did anyone ask R.J. when was the last time he called McGwire? Maybe RJ is a jerk that Mac doesn’t like/want to talk to?

You think McRae is worried about his job?

It seems that as soon as Mac says he wants to return, LaRussa will hire him as the hitting coach.

by Hardcore Legend on Jul 1, 2008 2:47 AM EDT up reply actions

I would love that

seriously, who could argue that mcrae > mcgwire? At least, as far as hitting goes?

But this year’s team’s approach has been excellent, imho. no idea who to attribute that to- schumaker worked with McGwire in the offseason, as did Duncan, and while the one of the two (that I would have bet on before the season) isn’t exactly tearing things up, the other one has been a minimum wage fukudome. I really haven’t seen anything I could hang on McRae, either way.

So are you saying

Tony LaRussa, Sparky Anderson, and Bobby Cox were great baseball players? Just because someone was good at something doesn’t mean they’d automactically be a good coach.

And am I missing where the Cardinals are one of the worst hitting teams in baseball? I sure thought I was paying attention.

by Tackle Box on Jul 1, 2008 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Minimum wage fukudome?

Some might say overpaid Schumaker…

Statues

are for HOFrs. Wouldn’t be right to put it with that group, and too put it by itself would be a bit awkard to say that least.

Selig was kind of a bitch.
