Brendan Ryan

So whats everyones opion on the guy now? I am glad he’s getting playing time, I’m sorry that its at the injury expense of Izturis, but I’m glad to finally see him play more.

by from First to Third on Jun 28, 2008 9:34 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I love him

with more playing time he will become a better offensive player and I think he is just a ballplayer on defense

and he’s got a great deal of potential.

I love it!

Don’t know how the numbers crunch, but everytime I see him play he does something that makes me cheer. He’s fun to watch, and I think he could be the solution at short.

he's

I'd like to see more of him

in general, but not just at the expense of Iz when Iz comes back. I think he should share time between SS and 2b and get his PA up that way. Iz has generally done us well, even as advertised (he wasn’t coming here on the heels of a hot bat, he came for the glove)

no doubt

iz2 looks very smooth in the field, much more so than ryan. nonetheless, i’m not sure he makes that more plays than ryan. this is case where your eyes may deceive you

by sportsman on Jun 28, 2008 9:38 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

matty pretty much got my point, i want less AK and ryan to bounce between positions. Iz can’t play 2nd, so Iz takes his natural position and Ryan shifts over. No to Little AK at bats, win win

I need to see him play a little more...

I think offensively, what we saw at the end of last year is the ceiling. I just don’t see him putting up anything better than a .750-ish OPS/95 OPS+ in a good year. I haven’t seen a metric that rates his “D” all that highly, though.

by dj tanner on Jun 28, 2008 9:39 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's sounds too negative...

I mean…i think there is upside. And i agree that his PT should not only come at the expense of Iztruis.

Is Ryan a potential 3b,

after Glaus runs his course with the birds? Or is 3b a position we want and need more power from?

a lot more power I'd say

especially with the signing of Wallace. Ryan is a lot more comfortable SS/2b as well, he’s not as fluid in the hot corner

Is there any timetable on Wallace?

Who else is “lurking” in the minors?

by fuegophil on Jun 28, 2008 9:44 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Freese

from the Edmonds trade is warming up, but he’s not pure power and could use some seasoning. He’s inline for when Glaus’ contract finishes, but I don’t think he’ll project inline after ‘09 if Wallace is as advertised

I'm not 100% on his footwork

as a 3b, I tend to look more at the offense at first and I’ve followed that, but if he could handle the footwork, he would easily project an above average 2nd IMO.

he needs to fill out and command the plate to be a true 3rd baseman from an offensive point of view, but if he had a 2nd baseman defensive toolset, his numbers would look a lot better. They’re going to be average or average+ if he’s a third baseman though. IMO.

it seems like SS was a defensive specialist’s position, now people want real offensive production out of it. ditto catchers. i don’t see why 2B shouldn’t be the next (and last?) to fall.

RZR says Ryan is better than Tulowitski

and much, much better than izturis. Dewan’s fielding bible stats say the same. Both will be hurt slightly by tonight though because of that ball in the first inning he was lined up out of position on.

by SleepyCA on Jun 28, 2008 9:42 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

For this season...

Yes, but, I mean…a) Tulo was injured for a stretch; b) Playing time considerations (look at the innings difference; and c) there is no way I will believe Brendan Ryan compares favorably, defensively, to Tulo

by dj tanner on Jun 28, 2008 9:45 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he’s talking about the british version of tulo, though

by baw on Jun 28, 2008 10:42 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

did tulowitski play injured? he’s on .900 right now, but was .861 over 155 games last year.

by mattyfrommo on Jun 28, 2008 9:45 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

eyeballing it

Ryan’s RZR should fall to 52/58 or .896, unless some of the plays he made tonight were out-of-zone. That’ll put Tulo back on top, unless he had a bad night, but Ryan is still 50 points better than izturis.

by SleepyCA on Jun 28, 2008 9:48 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

if total chances at the position were to be comparable, would they fall closer inline?

not against Ryan and for Iz, just assumed you had the stats themselves open and could see where the TC numbers fall

Yeah...no argument that

Ryan’s defense is not “good”. I guess my original point was that i want to see a bit more, but he is a cheap and serviceable option.

by dj tanner on Jun 28, 2008 9:57 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

what defensive metrics are you using for evaluation? on RZR ryan is #2 in in the MLB (behind bynum) for SS over 100 or more innings and has a perfect fielding percentage.

and I could have made some of this up…but Edmonds pretended a well-hit fly ball was routine, let it go over his head and bounce off the wall, and then threw out the tagging runner at third, who was caught off guard by the whole thing.

Re: Duncan stealing

If you “could” bulldoze a 2nd baseman akin to you can a catcher (read: if a 2nd baseman traditionally blocked 2nd) and Duncan was stealing..

when the play was over, would you see a puddle?

His size and most 2nd baseman, if they went to block, that would be a scary as hell proposition.

and also why the royals should join the NL

They would play st louis, chicago, and colorado alot more. all would be a big draw in KC

They had their chance and blew it.

But, living in Chicago, I love the fact the Cards come up to Milwaukee.

that’d be one big division!

AL said while they were waiting for the grounds crew to fix the field

that the royals had some big give away thing tonight as well & that helped it become a sell out

last game I went to at the K the fans were more concerned about getting free donuts than the win

they have a really good coach

and decent pitching and a solid closer. they seem to at least have a gameplan this year as opposed to the past few years.

They’ve beaten some solid teams this year.

agreed.

they’re a hell of a lot better than last year

always told my dad

that I work to get money to purchase a baseball team…

he always said that it sucks that I’m a Cards fan then, because if the Royals don’t fix some shit, they’ll be a hell of a lot cheaper to buy in ten years:)

Cards @ 1:10, brews @ 1:10, cubs @ 7:05

Hopefully we can get a win and pull within 2.5(if the cubs lose) tomorrow

Hopefully Loop brings his A game tomorrow

We are in trouble though Brian Bannister is ridiculously good at home and during the day.

Doesn't Loop traditionally

have some Vampire splits of his own? (crosses fingers)

Marshall vs. Buehrle

I like our chance of staying at 3.5 at a minimum. But I fully expect to see Loop pitch a solid game tomorrow. He’s a gamer.

OT: FYI

George Carlin on SNL tonight. It’s a rerun from 1975, which was SNL’s first year.

OT: Angels have no-hit the dodgers

and are losing! It’s the top of the 9th, and the angels are the visiting team. Jered Weaver started the game and threw 6 no-hit innings, but 2 errors and a sac fly in the same inning gave up a run. Jose Arredondo has also pitched two perfect innings.

If the Angels don’t score at least one run in their ninth, they’ll be no hit…

One out!

err, lose a game they no-hit the other team in. Yeah.

i don’t watch gameday very often, but saito’s consistency in both speed and break on his pitches looks very cool. fastballs and sliders and sliders both fall within 1MPH of 95 and 85 respectively and with 3” or 8” of break.

technically not ruled a no-hitter because they only pitched 8 innings :/

the first fielding error was on the starting pitcher, jered weaver.

kinda funny to get six not-hit innings on your own error :)
