Game 82 Open Thread- 28th June, 2008
Boggs Davies
2-0, 5.40 3-0, 3.12
Well, I suppose we'll get to see once again if the Cardinals can finally figure out a way to somehow scrape out a victory against the modern day equivalent of the 1927 Yankees, the 2008 Kansas City Royals. You know, there's something wrong with that sentence, I know, but I can't quite figure out what it is...
Last time the Cards faced Davies, just a little over a week ago, the results weren't pretty. 7 IP, 1 R, 5 H. Not so good. Let's hope that seeing him for the second time in such a limited time will give them a better idea of what to do against him this time around.

Pujols and Boggs will be the difference
Boggs needing the 7 runs of support and Pujols being the one to provide it.

Here's hoping. On paper the matchup does not look promising, however. Cards seem to mirror Duncan who seems to mirror the Cards recently. . .

mulder interview
Just saw Shannon’s interview with Mulder. He(mulder) seems like he’s in pretty good spirits and ready to pitch out of the bullpen. Hope he doesn’t get rocked!

On Mulder - which signing was more dubious? Mulder, Kennedy, Martinez?

Yes
but he is going to start getting Ryan Howard money in arbitration, which is going to get him double digit pay every year.
They can’t afford that and afford to resign Sheets, especially with Jeff Suppan making $12.5 M each of the next 2 years.

From what I gather they're gonna let Sheets walk
They probably aren’t trading Fielder and no team would be dumb enough to non-tender a monster like Fielder. He’s going to be there for his 6 years and Gamel/LaPorta are probably going to end up getting dealt.

they are going to move Corey Hart to clear room for them.

I hope they do
Hart is criminally underrated. I’d heard they were thinking of a Braun-Hart-LaPorta outfield but that’d be brutal, and now that Gamel is establishing himself as elite they have quite the conundrum. I might deal LaPorta or Gamel + I don’t know their system that well but some mid level pitcher + an A-Baller for Sabathia and take the picks when he walks.

I went to go see the Yanks play there last year….there isn’t A THING around that stadium other than woods, a shitty gas station and some section 8 homes.
The stadium grounds do not have ONE vendor cart…nothing…no beer, soda, memorabilia, etc. I thought it was going to be like a game at Busch so we went 3 hours early….we spent the entire 3 hours just standing in line waiting to get in…brutal.

I kinda hate it. Their fans don’t show up, and when they do, they don’t really seem to know anything about baseball. Every 2 minutes they were playing some “get loud” or “make some noise” graphic in the huge screen
I do like the actual structure. I”m sure it’s fun this weekend packed out with Cardinal fans.

But the hallways and the stadium grounds are far far below replacement level….to the point I’d wanna get there 3 minutes before the first pitch, get in my seat and not leave there until the last pitch.

they really need to bat someone like Brendan Ryan in front of Yadi
so that they can put the “steal and hit” sign on. With a man on first and 0 or 1 out you almost have to hit-and-run, since Yadi hits ground balls 48% of the time and can’t beat out a double play ball, but it would be nice if he could just take the pitch and bat with a guy on second 75% of the time.

a really cool graphic thing is available
on ESPN’s generic gameday app; in the area where it shows pitch location, if you check the “hit zones” box, it will show a shaded grid for the player’s babip on balls hit on a given area of the plate.
Ankiel was hitting .472 on balls thrown where that pitch was thrown ;) Glorious. But he’s awful everywhere else, except right down the middle.
