trades/offseason moves

what to do?

no middle infield or corner outfield power bat and solid starting 5

hopefully carp will return somewat strong and progrss from there but only wellemeyer and lohse have been strong

could we see roberts at 2nd b4 season end or possible lowe, wolf, or nebody else on the bump

and could somebody give me a reason not to pursue furcal in the offseason w/ speed, pretty good pop at leadoff, and great defensively why not go after him

furcal

i would rather see someone a bit younger who would get better rather than worse as the years go by.

but if we got the cash to throw at him, and still get some pitching maybe a three year deal would be sweet

Rick Ankiel could throw out Chuck Norris. Easy.

i feel the same. he’s 30 years old and has a career 97 OPS+.

Hudson

must be a target—he’s a good bat with average power and is great defensively. He’s also been virtually injury free his entire career. If they could sign O-Dog I’d be just fine with letting Ryan helm the SS position (with Barden being a backup possibly) because I think he has a shot at being a better than average player. I don’t think the organization can post two knockouts at those positions, and Hudson would be the guy I’d want of the free agent class next year.

Average second baseman offensively...

and probably the best defensive 2 bagger in baseball.

i haven’t watched the guy play much and i’m just now looking at his fielding history, but fwiw he’s second to last in revised zone rating for qualified 2nd basemen in 2008 and fourth to last in fielding percentage. his RZR history over the last four years is .841, .853, .790, .798.

i understand the age thing...

but all these guys are going to be old.
They are FA, I dont see how we can get a young talented MI unless we trade valuable commodities which we wont.

I think I'm going to wait at least until

the All-Star Break before I start mapping out the offseason.

by Tackle Box on Jun 27, 2008 11:43 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Maybe best to not wait for the off season.......

Ken Rosenthal says the Astros are willing to deal anyone on the roster who doesn’t have a no trade clause…....Miguel Tejeda, anyone? Wandy Rodriguiz? Would they pull the trigger within the division? Would we pull lthe trigger within the division?

Hmmm…...And I still say call the Pirates-now. They are loaded with all kinds of left handed pitching and another player I like for our team-Jose Bautista. The unwanted one comes off of the DL soon-start with him and see who else they want. The thing that strikes me is the Pirates are the only team I can find that actually has made trades in June-minor deals to be sure, but deals. Start there-they are open for business

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

They didn't resign Izturis

why would they turn around and trade for him?

by Tackle Box on Jun 27, 2008 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Whats wrong with

Carpenter
Wainwright
Wellemeyer
Lohse/Piniero
Garcia/Todd/McClellan

for 2009? I would hate to see us waste valuable prospects on guys like Lowe/Wolf. As for 2nd base paying 10-15 mil for someone who doesn’t have Utley skills is not my idea of a homerun. I’d love to see us shed some non difference making pitching(Thompson/Reyes/Flores/Villone etc.) for a young 2nd basemen (Cardenas, Antonelli) which could end up a true bargain

I agree on the salary part

if you are gonna pay any position player 10M+, you sure the hell better get some bang for your buck

how do you feel about hudson for 3/27?

is that too much for you? i think i’d be happy about that, but it may only be because i’m so sick of this team’s awful middle infield.

I would go for that

good defense, decent pop, decent OBP

I have to say he is worth 3X what AK is

I feel like that rotation hopes for the best

That rotation wouldn’t be bad, but it also anticipates that pitchers are going to stay healthy, which in the Cards organization (or any organization) is not all too realistic. Why not go upgrade, like everyone else? I’m sure Dave Duncan wouldn’t mind having at least one pitcher who is a completely functional pitcher, who is not a “project”.

Prospects are good. Especially when they aren't rushed.

Anybody want to try to get C Guzman from the Nats?

He’s the best player this season, but is in a walk year. May be too expensive to resign.

c guzman career line: .267/.304/.382
2008 NL average line: .258/.330/409

i’d put brendan ryan at SS even if the nats gave the 30 y/o guzman to us!

Well, Guzman is currently hitting .312/.338/.436

and will be the only Nats AS. He also ranks as good in the field as BRyan and Iz2.

Career year or budgeoning star?

Who knows?

Hard to judge since he’s been injured the last few seasons. This is the first season in awhile he’s been able to stay on the field. Nats are supposedly trying to sign him to a 2 year deal. Of course, that doesn’t mean they won’t trade him….....just less likely

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

First I agree we need to make some move on mif

Furcal and Hudson are often mentioned, and I have no problem with either of them as free agents. With that said I’d love to see Utley or Uggla patrolling second. I know it would drain our whole farm system to even have a shot at either one, so I’ll just leave it as a dream that won’t/shouldn’t be realized.

But are you really arguing that we need more power from the corner outfield positions next season. Assuming Rasmus is in center, that gives us Ank and Luddy in the corners, both of which are on pace for 30ish homeruns this season. If that is duplicated next year, I have no concern with their power production (maybe average, but they can both hit the ball hard). Add in a Mather and/or Skip type off the bench and outfield looks good to me.

Last point, I hope you accidentally omitted Wainwright from your “pitchers who have been strong” list, there is no other reason to not include him. He will be around next year barring some injury more devastating than what has him on the dl at present. I would also like to say that IMO Looper has been very good so far as he was last year prior to injury, maybe not top of the rotation good but I don’t expect that from him. I’ve also been pretty impressed with Piniero so far, little as far as results in the W column, but he typically gives the team a chance. I have no problem with looking outside the organization for a dominant pitcher to add to what we already have, but an opening day rotation of Carp, Wainer, Welley, Lohse, Piniero (feel free to plug Loop/Garcia/Todd into your least favorite spot in that rotation) certainly wouldn’t make me cringe.

Venturing somewhat off topic, many have talked lately about adding a top of the rotation type, namely CC. I would much rather see STL pursue him as a free agent than trying to swing any trade for the guy. Our starting rotation is easily one of our strengths this season, adding another guy who gets games to our bullpen only to end up with a no decision when the relievers blow it does nothing to bolster our record this year. There is no reason to throw away top prospects for that, but if the boys upstairs want to pony up the money for him in the offseason I would be more than pleased. Any trades should shore up the bullpen or the middle infield

end rant

old friends

Though they’ve been hot recently, Detroit is underperforming this year. Even if they stay in contention, Edgar Renteria has been his usual American League self, the version that got him traded away from Boston very quickly. I think a move back to the NL is in order, and the Cardinals might be a good fit if they give us some salary relief with him. They might demand Bryan Anderson, given their need of a post-Pudge catcher, but I wonder if he could be had for less.
