Glaus

always swinging for the fence, when his shortened swing is 1000 times better. Ludwick thinking every pitch is a fastball.
But when they’re on?!

by chicagocardfan on Jun 26, 2008 3:26 PM EDT reply actions

What happened to Ludwick?

He looks more and more like Chris Duncan
he’s swinging at any outside pitch

by Brianzaredbird on Jun 26, 2008 3:26 PM EDT reply actions

You know what's odd.

If you watch Dunc he actually has good AB’s but can’t square anything up…...

You watch Luddy and Ank lately and they have shitty looking AB’s but they manage to square one up once in a blue moon.

by ICbirdfan on Jun 26, 2008 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 26, 2008 3:26 PM EDT reply actions

From everything I've read about him

Regardless of his recent struggles.. The man seems like he could step on a landmine and still try to pitch… In some ways I have to admire that (just wish that it didn’t cost us as many games as it has)

Is that this is what’s happening with the Mariners now. Pitchers like Silva who suck are complaining about Ichiro, as if the one skilled player on that team is the problem with that horrible team.

i've always hated

walking the bases loaded… it gives the pitcher no maneuverability. i know thomas isn’t the hitter cabrera is, but with the bases loaded, his odds of driving in that run increase dramatically (it’s basically cabrera’s AVG vs. thomas’ OBP). at the very least i’d’ve had parisi throw junk to cabrera, try to get him to go fishing (which, trying to be the hero, cabrera may be more apt to do). we all know parisi is no good, but i still feel like TLR hung him out to dry. damn…

by longhornscardinals on Jun 26, 2008 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

well, I expect a major league pitcher to throw strikes

it’s not that difficult. And please don’t make a comment about Parisi in regards to strategy. You have to pick Thomas over Cabrera there. It’s not even a choice.

by Tackle Box on Jun 26, 2008 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

If the bullpen can't throw strikes

then it doesn’t matter if they walk Cabrera or not.

by Tackle Box on Jun 26, 2008 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

But that's like sayin

I can’t walk a straight line, so what does it matter if I walk on the window ledge or on the sidewalk. One is increasing your chances of failure exponentially.

As someone pointed out, we made it Miggy’s BA vs Thomas’ OBP. Thomas OBP will win.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 26, 2008 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not quite as simple as that

But it’s not a higher percentage since walking the batter really isn’t an option for the pitcher. It ensure’s a run and the end of a game. Either beat him by striking him out or force him to hit the ball which gives you roughly a 65% chance of getting out of the inning.

How many times has Thomas walked in a situation when he absolutely cannot be walked? Possibly never. And that’s the situation you were in. I agree in any other situation, its ridiculous to load the bases and create a situation where a walked in run is a posibility. But this is an entirely different situation.

At any point in a game, a walk does not end the game. In this situation, it does. Basically, you take on base pct. out of the equation because it isn’t an option. Thomas didn’t draw a walk, Parisi walked him with a stupid pitch that wasn’t anywhere near the strike zone. Parisi failed to execute his job. It wasn’t a bad call. It wasn’t a borderline pitch that could go either way. It was a horrible pitch.

Plus, you increase your chances of getting an out by creating a force play at every base on the infield.

Don’t confuse Parisi’s failure with Thomas’ success.

The Mariners in 2001

Lost a game to the Indians after having a 14-2 lead going to the bottom of the 7th. Funny thing is, if the M’s had won they would have won 117 on the year and broken the single season record.

I watched that game

for reasons I’m still not sure why. But it was epic and it was awesome.

runners on first and second - struck out to end the inning
runner on first - grounded out to end the inning
runners on first and third - popped out to end the inning
runners on first and third - grounded out to end the inning
then struck out to lead off the 10th

If it were me?

I’d fast track 2-3 who are projected to be bullpen pitchers into memphis and start having bullpen rotation based games. Flush a couple of good ones out and then clean house.

And frankly, the pen has given up 18 of them.

So the terminology stands

Um no

That is what we call a waste of money.

Look at how well over-spending for last year’s top reliever on the free market has worked for Baltimore. relief pitching is pretty unpredictable and spending valuable FA dollars on it is no better than gambling.

by JMedwick on Jun 26, 2008 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I know, relief pitching is a crap shoot

I guess i’ll just be happy if we can sign a good LOOGY instead of scouring the scrap heap for Ron Villones

the tough thing

is that you usually can’t buy your way into a decent bullpen. relievers are so variable - even the good ones generally peak for a year or two before fading - that almost every time a team declares they’re going to unleash some payroll on bullpen-building, they end up throwing away a lot of money (the phillies, e.g., tried that for years). of course our bullpen needs to be rebuilt, but for the most part it think it’ll take good scouting rather than “every last penny”...

by briangunn on Jun 26, 2008 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

and i just

repeated JMedwick’s point by accident (in other words, i agree with him)

by briangunn on Jun 26, 2008 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Indeed

I think one of the greatest remaining inefficiencies in baseball is that teams still try to spend their way out of bad bullpens. I wonder how good of a farm system/ team you could build by focusing on developing a bullpen from within and then after a breakout year from some of the players, trading them off at the deadline for other valuable pieces. For bad teams like the Pirates and Royals, it seems like a faster way to improve the team talent base by ensuring that each season you have enough cheap relief talent that a few gems emerge and then trade them away at the deadline for players that can help long term.

+1 my man

I am very happy with this team and that is why I get so upset when they lose games like this. But this has got to be in my opinion the worst loss of the year considering if we had won we would have taken two series in a row. Not to mention the 14 hits and only 2 runs. When you have that many men left on base you can feel that it is gonna come back and bite you. Even so we were two outs away from winning that game and the series. Something has seriously got to be done to the bullpen. Heads need to roll and changes need to be made starting with the aquisition of a knew lefty reliever. Also I wish Tony would designate more obvious rolls for the bullpen, it is anyones guess on any given day how the bullpen is going to line up. I actually like how much he changes up the offensive lineup, and seeing all the lobs today makes me think that it is time for yet another lineup switcheraroo. How about putting yadi higher in the lineup or even boog and possibly resting luddy and/or glaus for a couple games, give stavinoha a couple shots in rbi situations. The 4 5 and 6 spots in the lineup are the biggest rbi spots so it is tough to have those three spots occupied by very streaky hitters. Those are just my thoughts…..........................
Now go sweep the Royals you Red Birds, I expect 13 games over the 500 mark

They say I look like yadier molina

Wow

cubs with two outs in the bottom of the 9th and they send Neal Cotts up to bat for himself. Maybe they didn’t have any more hitters, but thats just a blatant give up.

Anyway. cubs drop 2 of 3 to Baltimore at home. I’ll take treading water with the cubs if we’re in Detroit and they’re hosting the O’s.

by Tackle Box on Jun 26, 2008 5:40 PM EDT reply actions

Their bullpen is as bad as ours

They won’t run away with the Wildcard, it’ll likely be a neck and neck battle between them, us, and at least one other team that makes a run (I’m looking at you, Braves)

Wow, someone posted some ugly stats on the STLToday forums.

Cardinals have blown 17 games when leading in the 7th/8th innings. Imagine if we’d been able to close out half of those. The Cardinals bullpen is like my short game in golf. I can drive far and straight, take great shots with my irons, but when it comes to finishing it out I 3 putt way too often.

These last three losses have been hard to swallow

Because we were in the game until the very end in all of them. When I looked at the schedule at the being of the year I said to myself. “man, we would be lucky to get out of 2-4 from boston and Detriot.” Actually, it was more like “what the F&$. Why are we going to bostong and detriot. In the same week. That bullsht.” Or something like that.

So to get 3-3 from those two. I’ll take it. Sucks we could have gone 6-0. And it’s clear that our bullpen is our weakness. Just not surprising against line ups like the Red Soxs and the Tigers.

Good the see Welly and Pujols back.

the 3 losses to the Royals

hurt a lot more. although we could have swept both the Tigers and the Red Sox, how cool would that have been? maybe it’s better we didn’t, cuz every team then would be geared up for us like no tomorrow

They did not look like they were going to contend at all. They had no chance vs CLE, DET, and CHW. They probably were going to be fighting neck-in-neck with the Twins for last place.

so do you think

that our bullpen is sucking because the starters aren’t putting in enough innings? I think it’s probably more of a mismanagement thing (although everything else is managed pretty well) as well as needing an effective shutdown guy there. But is the bullpen actually getting taxed?

Ankiel is Jesus!

by Cards Fan in Chitown on Jun 26, 2008 9:04 PM EDT reply actions

second that.

Though it would be nice if our starters could go deeper into games. Less innings is a resault of shuffling pitchers though.

by Evilfrog on Jun 26, 2008 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Victim of circumstance

The last two games were unfortunate in that typically (except maybe Boggs) our pitchers had been going deep. Yesterday, with the rain delay, Lohse was shortened. Granted, he wasn’t throwing well and had a high pitch count, but he would have at minimum gotten through 5 and possibly through 6. Today, Wellemeyer was pulled due to a pitch count. He looked to be firmly in control. I forgot to check his pitch count, but I think it’s safe to say he typically would have gotten into the 7th had he not been coming back from an injury.

by Tackle Box on Jun 26, 2008 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Most of them don't have the stuff to get away with strikes.

We have too many “no stuff” pitchers on our staff that need pinpoint control to survive. If Flores, Franklin, Izzy, Villone, or Parisi throw strikes they tend to get hammered.

by Cards Fan in Chitown on Jun 27, 2008 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah, he did

55 games, actually. He was overused early, unfortunately, but with a DL stint in between he was able to finish the season. Hurt his rotator cuff this spring, though, or admitted to it being hurt last year (how huge is THAT injury looking right now?) and had arthroscopic surgery in May.

Are you thinking of Josh Kinney? He’s not a LOOGY, but is a righty with a wicked slider that lefties couldn’t touch… he had TJ in spring training of ‘07 and then broke his arm or something while rehabbing?

Either one of those guys would be a huge pickup right now.

No kidding!

Parisi is a guy who does not have an “out” pitch…..... He got up 1-2 and he does not have a wipe out pitch, therefore he fucked around and eventually walked the guy..

The only pure strikeout pitcher in the pen is Perez but he doesn’t know where the fuck he is throwing the ball as of late….

To have a good bull pen you really need strike out guys….....

AKA…Carlos Marmol, Bob Howry (good fastball, thats all he really throws), Kerry Wood
