McClellan and innings and appearances...

Does anyone else worry about how many innings and appearances Kyle is logging? Obviously he is performing well .. and he doesn’t look like he is tiring…

But I feel like because our bullpen is so bad…TLR is afraid to use anyone else. As a result..he puts Kyle in a lot. And well it seems like a lot of work for someone who lacks the major league experience and who has his injury history. Hello Verducci rule or whatever it is called.

With the blown saves

the late losses and the like, I’m curious how close we are to a 50/50 split on bullpen losses vs on the starters.

Wouldn’t have thought that was going to be the issue going into this season.

I use statistics much as a drunken man uses lamp-posts – as support rather than illumination. - Andrew Lang

by AdjustedExpectations on Jun 26, 2008 12:58 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It's easier for a bullpen to lose a game than it is to win one

In order to win one they need the offenes to stage a late inning comeback.

by Tackle Box on Jun 26, 2008 1:03 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

For a reliever to receive a loss...

it means he came into a tie game or a game his team was leading, and gave up whatever amount of runs to give up the lead for good. So how are they more likely to lose?

by LukeMP1186 on Jun 26, 2008 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Didn't mean to post this 3 times

was having a weird issue with posting messages for a second.

by Tackle Box on Jun 26, 2008 1:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But they would never lose either...

A starter could give up 0 runs all year and never win as well. I’m not arguing to argue, I just don’t see the difference.

by LukeMP1186 on Jun 26, 2008 1:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That said...

a bullpen is slightly more likely to lose on the road, considering the home team bats last. But the reverse is true at home, so it evens itself out.

by LukeMP1186 on Jun 26, 2008 1:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

not unreasonable

by Pitchers Hit Eighth on Jun 26, 2008 1:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

How funny,

at the beginning of the season, the pen is the only thing we were supposed to have of strength

by chicagocardfan on Jun 26, 2008 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

bullpen has also

issued almost as many walks (115) as the starters (125) in about half as many innings pitched

by Pitchers Hit Eighth on Jun 26, 2008 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

to be fair

Cards starters (125) have given up less walks than all MLB teams except for Minnesota (97)

so they’re skewing the numbers a bit

but yeah, it’s still gross (relievers have issued 8th most walks in MLB)

by Pitchers Hit Eighth on Jun 26, 2008 1:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

IF

mulder, clement, carpenter come back healthy and effective, some of our good starting pitching will bounce to the pen (clement’s already going there). i guess thats the best case scenario.

I've been trying not to pay too much attention to the Cubs

but man is Edmonds somewhat carrying this team right now or what? And I though he wasn’t going to last….Jimmy will be with them the rest of the year now…and will probably be the full time CF if he keeps it up. His HOF chances might be getting better than they were 2 months ago…which were slim and none. I shutter to think about it, but I bet he will be clutch for them in the playoffs if he is still heathy then.

but during the rainout shannon was talking about how jimmy’s in the best shape of his life right now (sans the age) and he’s possibly only just adjusting to his better physical condition. of course, shannon was probly on his 10th beer and may have just been talking to talk…who knows
