Toronto is putting up some serious runs against the Reds.
Boston still looks bad
Houston and Mil are winning, Cubs aren’t, but down by one.

If the Cards weren’t playing tonight, I’d be watching Fla vs Rays, that game looks to be a treat.

Our active roster (not including Boggs, parisi, perez, or stavinoha because they weren’t listed) makes 54.419 million.

Well Cox made an, ahem, interesting roster decision earlier when it was 4-1 and the bases were empty

He PH Chipper Jones, who got a single. Then he pinch-ran Lillibridge to avoid tearing up Chipper’s quad. He burned two bench players in one spot in that inning, so he was left with Corky at the end.

I just saw that the Cubs have a contest to let a fan sing the 7th inning stretch

We should all enter it and if somebody wins, wear a Cardinals jersey underneath the Cubs jersey. Start singing, and during the song take off the Cubs hat, and the jersey, then pull a Cardinals hat out of your pocket or something, and give a hearty “Root root root for the CARDINALS” at that point. Since June 3rd they have:

Taken 2 of 3 from MIN and TOR on the road, then went to boston and didn’t get swept in the awful half-a-park; then came home, took 2 of 3 from PIT, and swept HOU.

Didn’t fare so well in MIL, 1 of 3, but that’s a tough park to play in (as is wrigley) and one of the losses was a one-run loss.

too much offensive talent on that team

for them to be as bad as they were.

They still have suspect pitching and a bad bullpen (i refuse to believe solomon torres is going to be a viable closer), but they’ll win alot of games with their offense and any game Ben Sheets pitches (if he is healthy). If they had Yovani Gallardo, they’d be scary.

I was kinda thinking the same thing

Generally, I don’t buy into y’all’s “stealing signals” theory, but I can see how some would believe it. On all his sliders out of the zone that inning the Cubs made terrible swings. Then, there was a high and outside fastball that Blanco almost swung at. Hmm…

by punchinjudy on Jun 24, 2008 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Let me continue that thought

I think the Cubs are a very solid ballclub, and are built to win a crapload of games… Maybe even 100.. BUT, they aren’t as good as they are at home. If they had a winning record on the road I wouldn’t be calling shenanigans.. Furthermore, their comebacks are EPIC.. not like they get a timely hit to overcome a 1-2 run deficit, but string together 5-6 runs in one inning after not getting more than 2-3 hits a game till the 6th-7th inning.

by cloistermaximus on Jun 24, 2008 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

looking only at june

they have beat COL,ATL,andCHW at home…only the White sox are good and they have a solid pen like tops in the AL so thats kinda fishy..but still

I just didn't feel like dealing with

all the “they’re just jealous” posts over a bcb. Personally, I don’t think they’re stealing signs either, but this whole thing has got me scratching my head. I guess if you start looking for something, you start seeing things that either are or maybe aren’t there. I called a friend of mine who’s a big cub fan and floated it past him. He agreed that while it’s sort of silly to think, it’s not out of the realm of possibilites and it’s happened before in other venues and such plus the reasoning is definately worth taking note of. I just think we can keep an eye on it and possibly discuss it in the game threads. Maybe I’m just too paraniod, i just don’t like feeding that site with more crap for them to get excited about.

by Tackle Box on Jun 25, 2008 1:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Really, their team OPS in the 8th and 9th inning

and clutch stats are not out of line. In fact, the 8th and 9th inning are the worst two innings for the team; it could just be that we pay more attention to what happens in those innings, so it just seems like they are coming back a ridiculous amount. The 7th is the real outlier. granted, I don’t know where to find triple-situational splits for home+late+losing…

plus, our team this year has been really bad at coming back, so relatively speaking there is a huge disparity. i’d love to see someone compare the ‘08 cubs to the ‘04/’05 cards from the 8th and 9th inning comeback perspective… i may do this myself when I get time. It’ll be early august at best though.

without doing the research I think it’s more likely attributable to luck, and we should assume that it won’t necessarily continue. Much like our late bad luck shouldn’t continue. I think we’re going to have a heck of a pennant race this year, with maybe 3 teams with 90+ wins vying for the NL central division and 4+ teams all within a couple of games of the wild card.

(the braves and dodgers are better than they’ve been so far!)

Living in Chicago

I see a TON of cub games. Honesly, most if not some of all of em. In my view, it has nothing to do with the late innings. It seems like most of their onslaughts happen between the 4th to 7th innings usually after they’re losing by 3 to 4 runs. Also, their BA with runners in scoring pos and 2 outs is putrid. another situation that might call for different signs.

are going to be on the road a helluva lot this second half, no?

After today

81 total home games, 41 played, 40 left.
81 total away games, 36 played, 45 left.

Once they finish this 3 game set with the Orioles, they will have 38 home games and 45 away games left.

In September, they only have 9 home games.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 25, 2008 3:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Then that means between now and September

They should probably still be playing an equal number or more home games, thus giving them a chance to wrap up the division by smoking teams at home. We just have to keep grinding it out.

Just not sold on the Braves

Somewhere along the way they just forgot how to be the Braves of the 90s. The last two years they’ve underperformed their pythagorean record by five games, and look to be on pace do do something similar this season. Smoltz is out for the year. Glavine is fragile. The rest of their staff is unproven, and they’re giving consistent ABs to Jeff Francouer. Chipper is injury-prone. They worry me less than the Brewers, Dodgers, and Marlins for the Wild Card.

On an off note. The Braves of the 90s were incredible, and thus were dubbed “the team of the 90s.” Do you think we (as it sits right now) are “the team of the 00s”? Discuss.

NL observations

Man what is happening to the Phillies? When it looked like they were going to run away with the NL East, they have dropped 6 in a row and are letting New York and Atlanta stay in the race. Ever since they had that big game against us the Philles have been in a nose dive. Could the Marlins actually win this division??? This division could come down to the final days of the season like last year….

One would think the LA Dodgers will be a busy team at the trading deadline. With the Snakes falling back to Earth after their hot start, the Dodgers can still win this division but they will need to make some trades. I bet Torre is begging management to get a “big bat” for their line-up and to get another starter. But they are still way under .500 and will have to get on a win streak soon…because right now they are missing a big opportunity to move up in the standings with the Snakes playing under .500 ball now.

As for us in the central. The next week and a half will be a big indicator on how this division will shape up going into the All-Star Break….THe Cubs will be on the road for 10 yes TEN games starting this weekend. And we all know the Cubs don’t play as good on the road…it could be an interesting next 2 weeks especially the 3 game series at St. Louis….I can’t wait to see what the standings will be when that series starts…
