May go something like this

Morgan: And there’s a HR off Dice-K. He’s just not very consistent. I remember hitting my share off Dice-K late in my career.

McCarver: Me too. June 7th, 1973. Probably the best June 7th in the history of the game.

McCarver rambling on about stretching? Cause, I’ve been to my fair share of games and some of the extensive stretches Pujols does are ridiculous. A guy that big shouldn’t bend that way.

Whenever I hear C.C. to the Cubs rumors

I have to laugh. They don’t have anything of exceptional value at the minor league level and if they think some team is going to want Alfonso Soriano’s contract, they are kidding themselves. They MIGHT get the Indians to bite on a deal involving Soto with Martinez not getting any younger but even then, it won’t be enough to match the Brewers, Yankees, Dodgers.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 21, 2008 11:23 PM EDT reply actions

I would support

The cubs moving Soto out of the division.

by Evilfrog on Jun 21, 2008 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions

If I were Hendry/Piniella I'm not sure I'd be all that immediately concerned

about getting more starting pitching. I know, everyone could use more starting pitching, but the Cubs look pretty good right now, assuming Z will be back soon. Dempster is still rolling along (although I would understand if they didn’t consider that sustainable), Lilly has continued to improve over the past month, Gallagher has been pretty good, Marquis is a servicable back of the rotation guy, and I’m probably forgetting someone…. I’ll freely admit that I would be a pretty lousy GM, but if I were Hendry I wouldn’t give up much for a soon-to-be expensive free agent rental right now.

It pains me to say it, but the Cubs look pretty good generally right now. It’s been both frustrating and gratifying to watch them match us game for game over the past week. We get swept, they get swept (although by a much better team); they come back to win two, we come back to win two (although against a much better team). They’re our evil opposites.

by BTown Birds fan on Jun 21, 2008 11:44 PM EDT up reply actions

They are going to need bullpen help

Marmol is exhibiting early signs of an arm injury from overuse, and Kerry Wood can’t be that far behind.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 21, 2008 11:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah Marmol's definitely been wild his past couple appearances

But why Wood (beyond history, which I admit is a pretty compelling argument)? Seems like if anything he’s settling in and getting better – he’s one of the best in the NL right now, certainly the best in the NL central.

by BTown Birds fan on Jun 21, 2008 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Because he hasn't really changed anything

as far as his pitching mechanics. He has reduced his workload somewhat by becoming a reliever but Lou is using him so damn much, he’s due for some sort of hiccup.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 21, 2008 11:58 PM EDT up reply actions

He's reduced his load quite a bit

He’s on pace for 78 games and 83 innings. That’s sure a lot by a closer, but I don’t really know how to think about it terms of what he can handle given his history, since he’s done a lot more but he’s also been chronically injured. You may be right (and I won’t complain too much if you are, although I really like Wood and would love to see him healthy and thriving in the AL), but right now he’s doing pretty well.

by BTown Birds fan on Jun 22, 2008 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions

He's doing exceptional right now

but so was Marmol a week ago. There is something to be said for pitching everyday. He’s appeared in 36 of the teams 74 games. That is a lot for a closer.

Plus, you have to find out what you have in him

before August, if you really plan on improving the team. If he can be a solid #4 starter, maybe they don’t have to go looking for pitching. If he is what we expect him to be (hurt), then maybe they will pull the trigger on a deal.

The Cards get swept by the Royals & now they possibly can sweep the Red Sox. I hear Cinncinatti will be having a fire sale, but now they might sweep the Yanks.
