Anyone know what N Ryan managed?
I wouldn’t be surprised if he had games close to that number while throwing in the upper 90s.
I knew he had some crazy games
You know the 12k, 12bb, 3h types. Still thats an insane number if true.
So I know that I'm supposed to hate everything about the Red Sox...
But I kinda think their bullpen drummers are cool. Just a bunch of big kids out there.
Boston Announcers & Players
The announcers are awful on MLB.COM which I have to watch in Tennessee. I cut down the sound and am listening to Shannon and Rooney via KTRS, but the idiot Red Sox are “playing” in the dugout doing some kind of routine that makes them look very unprofessional. Or could I be prejudiced? Anyway, great homerun, LaRue! Great game so far, Lohse! Let’s teach Boston about baseball!
"Unprofessional"?
Hardly. Bullpens all across baseball do stuff like that. Gives ‘em something to do—the idle mind and all that.

I hate to try and play the “rational” card on the in-game log, I know it’s more impassioned and a “what are you doing for me now” type environment.

he allowed 19 of 34 (56%) of inherited runners to score in 2007.

55 of those innings were pitched in 2007, and he sported a ridiculously unsustainable 3.7% HR/FB. HR/FB is considered to be a simple property of fly balls allowed and park effects, not a pitcher skill. i would hope for more than 2:1 K/BB out of a LOOGY because he’s primarily brought into the game for extreme matchups.
FIP > ERA, OBP > AVG
it does seem like he had a really good year that year
Or lucky…
but he also put up a 3:1 K:BB ratio, so while one stat may be a fluke, the other was still pretty high!

"the hardest decision to make is to do nothing; there is a terrible temptation to interfere." -gen patton
Yeah she's hot
And I’m not exactly sure how the trade went down. I know it was in the offseason though, maybe spring training last year, and both were minor leaguers. Heck, at the time, the cubs had talked about putting Cotts in their rotation. Don’t think he made any starts though.
And AAAAAAAArdsma was part of the “big arms” bullpen Kenny Williams put together with him and McDoughal and Jenks. Didn’t work out so well when two of those guys cant throw strikes.

"the hardest decision to make is to do nothing; there is a terrible temptation to interfere." -gen patton
OK
so I’m not a huge WPA fan, but springer got .271 WPA points for his job tonight, and franklin got .190 for his (also awesome, imho) 2 IP, 1 ER “save”. And why can only one player get a save, per game? Springer tonight was awesome. He deserves a “something”, and that something should be more than a “hold”.
What if the rule for saves was changed, from “x IP vs x runs”, to “x WPA”? Where should the cutoff be—.100? .200?

so out in Oakland,
Houston Street also tried to have a 2 inning save tonight, and so far he’s given up a 2 run go a head HR. and once the A’s got the lead back in the bottom of the 8th, he’s given up a solo shot to let the Fish tie it up.
FRANK was really lucky tonight. or good. i’m not sure which
I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!
it's funny how FRANK
seems to somehow be lucky, over and over and over and over. And over. And over.
I’m still hesitant to count on him- by all the holy numbers, as azrubot has shown, in ways cannot argue with, (though i suck with figgerin’ pitching), he should be toast- but he just keeps gittin’r’dun, and I love him for it. And i trust him, in my heart, which is scary cuz i know it is due to be broken and I just have to hate that…
Hopefully he’ll have one incredibly bad outing, where he gives up 7ER on 9 hits and 3 walks and 2 solo HR (don’t ask how) to even the books, and the “almost blowout win” will become a tie game won in the 11th with a walkoff by Schumaker, with Thompson or parisi getting the win, and the books will be balanced, and we won’t have to worry about “sample size” again until 2010.
After that he can go on and do what he’s been doing and none of us will question it.
"If thats bad luck, lets DFA our luck away." -DriverZN
i'm not going to ask how FRANK could do all that in one inning
that’s too scary to even talk about.
i to hope he just keeps on keeping on
btw, the A’s finally won it in extra’s. louis gonza dropped a deep fly to the wall off of eric chavez. and the catcher doubled him home.
in LA, borwoski is blowing it big time. bottom 9, 4-3 indians, runners at 1st & 3rd. one out. Cliff Lee is going to kill him when this of over.

borowski, otoh
hasn’t been gittin’r’dun for a long, long time. if only the indians had accepted my Izzy-for-peralta proposal in april…

you are correct sir. joe just gave up a slow roller to short
it’s all tied at 4 with 2 outs & the bases still loaded.

deep fly to center
but grady ran it down
going to the 10th
i dont know why, and i don’t care who the teams are, but i love watching late baseball games out on the west coast.

just root against the dodgers
and especially against laRoche and hu. We want them to fail, so that Coletti trades ‘em for nothing to Mo. And cuz it’ll be STL, ATL, or LAD for the wild card.
[Hu especially, imho. The guy has been bad offensively this year, but he looks like a guy who could be a monster at the plate, glaussian even, and though he not as fast as Ryan, he plays iz2-level or better defense at short. if he can figure out the “hitting MLB changeups” thing, he’ll be truly great.]

saito failing, otoh
was pretty much unexpected… but welcome.

Don't tease me with LaRoche
I read that real quick and thought something was in the works.
I’ll take either, really. I’ve been a LaRoche fan for awhile but I’d settle for Blake DeWitt.

LaRoache is a name every one has tossed around for a while now
i’m not sold on him just yet, but i see the potential.
i fully agree with the blake dewitt statement. he’d also be another home town boy who comes back to play for the Cards. even though he’s from Sikeston. that’s only 2 1/2 hours south of the STL. so it’s close enough.

Having watched LaRoche this winter playing for Team USA
having him and Rasmus on the team by 2010 would be a dream.

our dude dewitt just ended the game on a grounder to SS
and i think the guy who wins the hot dog eating contests at Nathan’s in NYC every 4th of July got the save.
joe borowski got the W. he’s owes Cliff Lee big time

outside of baseball, he’s generally a good kid.
I’ve talked to him a few times, he was a solid football player in HS as well.

would you do
rasmus for hu and laroche? Or rasmus + ...? (anything but Todd)?
If not, iterations on the above?
"If thats bad luck, lets DFA our luck away." -DriverZN
with that deal I’d be willing to talk anything outside of our pitching prospects. Easily.

i've seen Hu a lot, and the dude can't hit
his swing is really slow & he gets himself out by swinging at junk low & away all the time. are you sure you think he can turn it around?
btw, a two out double but johnny peralta puts the tribe up 6-4

dangit
need peralta to fail, cuz i have plans for him, but also need the dodgers to fail ;)
This is worse than the “root for chipper/but against the braves” thing…
anyway hu is HUGE. I had no idea he be as big as he is, and his defense is ++. how to project hitting from that is hard, but his swing does really remind me of early glaus this year. To me, a “bad swing” can always be fixed….
"If thats bad luck, lets DFA our luck away." -DriverZN
well, glaus fixed it.
and hu is a frigging SS.

That scenario showed up a lot for me in sports betting. No matter how hard I tried I got myself into a situation where I was rooting for a player and against the team.
You can make a lot of coin that way, but it’s going to make me bald.

What about Milwaukee?
They’re coming on strong. Much more worried about them than the Braves, at this point anyways

Going by the article on MLB.com it sounds like Duncan is ready to see what Mark can do.
I won’t be suprised to see him get a start.

Stavinoha got his 16th double and Freese hit him in, otherwise it was looking to be a one sided affair.

That's not a bad idea
two reasons: 1, he pitched better than his stat line showed. 2, if he fails, he can easily replace Flores, who despite the soft spot in my heart for him, needs to be left in Boston.

As long as it's Flores and not Villone
Ignoring the ‘tudes seen recently about Villone, he’s generally been pretty decent with a workload that is quite heavy compared to recent times for him. Flores is the one that should be considered on the outs within those two.

how exactly
do you have a soft spot for Flores? going back to 2004, his name has pretty much been synonymous with “irritable bowel syndrome” for me.
I have a love/hate relationship with the Cardinals' middle relief corps.
So there are 3 schools of thought on using Franklin two innings, right?
1- TLR wanted this win desperately (although using Flores contradicts that) and could only trust Franklin to get any of those last 6 outs.
2- TLR wanted a legit excuse to use Izzy in a save situation and by burning your closer out for the next day (atleast), you give yourself a chance to re-instate Izzy for at least a day.
3- TLR knew that Mitchell Boggs will be standing in a puddle of his own creation by the 9 batter of the first inning tomorrow and that a closer will not be necessary.

I hope it's not #3
Although I have a bad feeling that Boggs will struggle to get through 4 innings tomorrow.
#4 we actually put up more than three runs, hope like hell we can win it
I think Boggs will be adequate tomorrow, trying to be hopeful.

I was at the game last night
and it was sweet. So many crowd-deflating plays – the Manny strikeout, the Yadi homerun. Also heartwarming to see Cardinals fans everywhere, even one in an Ozzie Smith jersey. It wasn’t surprising to see Lohse eat Wakefield’s lunch, but I was happy our relief came through in the end. Satisfying evening of baseball.
