An Idea to save your sanity this summer.
Starting tonight I am not going to follow the Cubs or care if they win another 100 games this season. This might be a good idea for my fellow die hard Cardinal fans.
Look I'll give the devil their due...the Cubs are a really good team, they are healthy and are more than likely going to run away with the Central Division. Good for them.
BUT....As long as the Cards can keep the pace they are currently at this season they will win the Wild Card. Sure winning the division is what we hope for but I think we as die hard Cardinals fans need to focus on just getting to the playoffs. We are not going to have as much fun if we are always keeping an eye on what the Cubs are doing. I have been guilty of this and I even found myself not being as happy after a Cardinal win because the Cubs also won and we didn't gain anything in the standings.
So in closing... the Cubs can win the rest of their games this season (except the ones against us)....all it means is that they will have a spot in the playoffs. We also have a good chance of getting a spot as the wild card. And as we know once October starts it's a new season and anything can happen. So save your sanity this summer, enjoy the Cardinals and their suprising great start this season, let the Northsiders have their run and their fun. We can worry about them in October when we beat them for the NL Title.

Excellent advice!
The only time we should pay them any attention is when we actually play them. Then you figure out how to beat them…..
And wouldn’t you know, Jim Edmonds has had back to back to back games where he got hits and drove in a run or two…...I still feel strangely happy for him. He’s finally hitting over .200.
I admit I went and looked at gameday. But I won’t do that after tonight. It doesn’t matter.

I too feel
strangely happy for Jimmy Baseball. I can’t seem to help myself. But dang, that is one ugly uni he is wearing right now!
You make a good point, KYCards. We can’t do anything about the Cubs winning unless they are playing the Cards. I stress about it and that robs much of the joy from the Cards’ great start. I am going to attempt to follow your advice and just keep a casual eye on what the North Siders are doing from here on out. The playoffs are still within our reach and it is a very long season.

Eh
Part of the fun is keeping up with the whole league, especially our division. I like the suspense, which is pretty mild at this point.

Yeah I understand
and I’m not going to completely ignore the Cubs like they don’t exist. I’m just not going to pull my hair out and get mad if they keep winning games and get a big lead on us in the division. I just can’t let it get to me like it was, it took some of the fun out of our winning at times for me….I just want to focus on the Cards keeping the pace they are and hopefully win the wild card or even the division. Or in other words my Cubs hate was getting the best of me…when in the long run it shouldn’t matter because we can still get in the playoffs no matter what the Cubs do…..something like that.

It's really amazing
when you think about it…there probably isn’t anyone still alive who remembers the last time the cubs won the W.S. I prefer we keep it that way for another hundred years so I can die without ever experiencing it also.

Cubs
I actually don’t get this sick feeling when they win…. I know all STL needs to do is keep wining and good things will happen, aka… Cubs falter or the Birds get the Wild Card. It’s all about making the play-off’s anyway you can.
I actually really enjoy watching Zambrano so I will follow the Cubs. I also like Fukudome’s game….........

You can put me down as a huge fan of Mr. Zambrano's abilities.
He’s been a horse his whole career-his only DL stint was several years ago for a leg injury. He’s managed to be good to near great even though he has struggled with control (self control included) his whole career. His emotions don’t bother me at all-baseball and pitching mean everything to him, and I don’t mind him showing it. Even when he smacked Michael Barrett I wasn’t mad at him. It needed to be done…...
He also got three hits last night, and kept his team in the game even though his control was way off. Zambrano is a different breed of ML pitcher-but he brings it all to the field and you can’t ask for more than that.
She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

That being said...
He’s the one staff Ace I wouldn’t want to see on the mound for my team in a deciding (read 5th or 7th) game. He gets too over-anxious and pumped up and then can’t control his stuff, walks batters, and isn’t able to get out of the 5th or 6th inning.
If the Cards were to make the playoffs, I’d much rather have WW out there with the Cardinal bullpen than Zambrano with the Cub bullpen.
I believe this to be their greatest deficiency—that plus the impact players they have that can completely disappear for weeks at a time (Soriano, Ramirez, Derosa, Edmonds)

I wish I could ignore them
but living in Chicago they cannot stop talking. They are so annoying and relentless. We have the second best record in the national league and they still cannot stop talking down about us. And I personally do not like Fukudome at all. I think he has some gaping holes in his swing and gets fooled terribly if hes not guessing off speed. I watch all the cubs games because I am a die hard baseball fan and its always on tv, and their announcers make me hate them so much more. I have stopped being upset when they win because you are completely right it doesn’t really matter, but it just spurs them on to keep talking.

Hard to do when you live in Chicagoland
and all your friends are Cubs fans! I’m scared to death that (dare I say) this is “the year” for the Cubs. I shouldn’t be scared, but I am… I take this game way too seriously. sigh

Completely Useless By September
Thats all you ever really need to remember about the cubs anyway.
Besides, say that StL does win the wild card, looking back the past 10 years, how many of the wild card winning teams either made it to the WS or won the WS? A lot of them! I think that the wild card is our golden ticket to another ring! Do they make world series rings in toe sizes?
Then again, if the birds actually did win the series this year by way of the wild card, I’m sure everyone would be all “oh, but it doesn’t count, they weren’t a good team” just like they did in 2004. How stupid is that? That aggravated me to no end having to listen to all that garbage.

I think you mean 2006
We were a very, very good team in 2004.
And add my voice to the chorus of Cards fans in Chicago that (a) can’t help but follow what the Cubs are doing and (b) die a little inside with each Cubs victory.

ummm... yeah, I meant 2006
I realized I typed the wrong year in about an hour after the fact.
But yes, we were VERY good in 2004, and lost to the…. wild card team.
I live in Chicago, and I’ve found the best way to ignore the cubs is to just never pick up the Tribune or the Sun Times, it’s working pretty well so far.

Ha... It wish it was that easy
My brother is a Cubs fan. And it sucks. Well… At least this year when they are doing so well. Nothing is better than making fun of him for all the collapses and suckiness of the past years, but nothing is worse than the karma that comes back to bite me when they dominate the league this year or “Bi-Polar Betty” comes to town and somehow shuts us down. Although it’s weird how we both love rival teams, I’ll admit that it is fun to keep up with our teams, stabbing jokes at each other as often possible. However, not following the Flubs in not an option for me, nor something I would ever do.

HA!
I have the same problem—except the list includes both brothers, girlfriend, all her friends, half of my buddies, and pretty much the entire mother’s side of my family, half of which resides in St. Louis, all of which happen to have my email address.
The lowest of low blows though? Having a friend set up your email and cellphone accounts to receive updates after every Cubs game so that you KNOW they’ve won 10 in a row…bastards all….....

Cubs gotta strike now . ..
They may have one last gasp with the likes of Edmonds, Wood, Dempster appearing in significant innings this season. The C(l)ubs’ payroll looks a bit like the national debt. When the inevitable decline begins, the bean counters will squeal like scalded hounds, and the sell off will begin. Then the depleted farm system will doom the Cubs to dismal decades.
Again

Wish I could agree....
But if they get sold to a decent owner who’s a fan and isn’t afraid to spend money (I’m looking at you Mark Cuban) I think they’re going to be just fine for a good long time.
IMO, their farm system really isn’t all that depleted, the AAA I-Cubs are near the top of the division (which includes Memphis, btw) and their other minor league teams are all playing well and have pretty decent talent.
Their farm system has never really been a problem - they’ve had plenty of talent come up through the Cub farm over the last 25 or 30 years - just go to baseball-reference and check out their drafts. The problem is that most of those players only get to All-Star caliber AFTER they leave Chicago, which drives their fans nuts to the point that they hold on to certain “franchise” players longer than they should (Prior, Wood, Sosa all come to mind). I heard a rumor they could have moved Prior for Tejada straight up at the start of the 2004 season but didn’t pull the trigger. Can you imagine that lineup with Tejada in the middle of it as well?
