fading

was it just me or did others watching the game see some indication of waino fading and some body language suggesting some frustration? still probably would not have pulled him then, but after 2 walks and a loaded sit, i might have asked springer to finish the inning. seems tlr kind of has this macho thing for waino and often leaves him in a bater or too many.

Through 5-2/3, Waino had faced the minimum

17 batters, one baserunner, subsequently erased on a DP.

Then 5 of the next 8 batters reach--BEFORE the grand slam—including two of the last three on walks (while the third of those three flied out after reaching a 3-ball count).

So clearly before the grand slam Waino was struggling, and if you’re actually watching the game (as opposed to listening to it or Gamecasting it) I think it was clear that Waino was off by that point.

He was missing his spots, he was taking more time between pitches, and his body language (to me) indicated that he was tired. I thought this BEFORE the grand slam, and the only reason I’m on this chat now is to see if others thought he looked to be in serious trouble before the granny.

I’m watching the Pitt telecast, and they weren’t giving Waino’s pitch count so I didn’t know what it was, but it didn’t matter—-he looked gassed.

And I was completley shocked he came out for the 8th.

For the record, after facing the minumum through 5-2/3 (17 batters), Waino allowed 8 of the the last 15 hitters to reach, and 5 of them scored. That shouldn’t happen when a team has bullpen.

by salvomania on Jun 2, 2008 10:32 PM EDT reply actions

agree on the body language

any pitcher who gives an opposing team a basically once through the order >.500 average (for 8 as noted above) clearlry needs some help. must be that you have to be watching on tv to figure that out.

That tells me a bit about Tony

He made the call before he loaded the bases. They did all the stalling, but made no move.
The slam was unfortunate, but letting him come back in the 8th was a concern for his allstar selection win/lose record, not winning the game….....................maybe we get lucky…shame we don’t have a rh pinch hitter…...

He’s hit home runs pulled on pitches on the black outside I don’t really understand how he does it and still have any ability to hit the inside half.

he hung his pitcher out on the line like wet laundry. He must feel that Wainwright is the Ace now, because he does the same thing to Carp.

get in line, tony and dave don't get first crack at their own buts, but Mo should!!

glad they didn’t ask springer or worrell to pitch to michaels, no telling what would have happened

Don't forget Skip...

If Duncan made a bad break on a ball and missed it, just like Skip did on that double, people would be all over him. But somehow despite being a terrible outfielder, Skip gets a free pass on his mistakes.

Of course, he has no business playing CF, either, especially when you have Ankiel. So to that extent it’s Tony’s fault. But I have never seen a player make so many bad breaks as Skip. Even Duncan is better, he just looks ungainly.

Usually when I see a box score in the morning like this:

0 0 0 0 0 0 4 1 0
2 0 2 0 0 0 0 0 0

I’m thinking “Christ our bullpen sucks.”

worst loss of the year?

maybe. It reminds me of that crushing loss versus colorado when we are about to take the first 3 games of that series

boo cubs, hooray beer

by Raconteur on Jun 2, 2008 10:52 PM EDT reply actions

that game in colorado

was the one that hurt the most to me, izzy vs. houston #2, and then tonight. give michaels and the pirates credit, though—they roger freed us.

by briangunn on Jun 2, 2008 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I think

the most painful one for me was the one Izzy blew against the Pirates on May 15. I thought we would tailspin then, but they rebounded and took two out of three from the Rays and have played well since. So maybe they can do it again. The Nats are 13-15 at home right now.

by cardsgirl95 on Jun 2, 2008 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions

i would ask tony...

when does a pitchers personal W mean more than the team’s W? i think it’s obvious tony let wainer pitch to try and pick up the win

Rick Ankiel could throw out Chuck Norris. Easy.

by emrfg8 on Jun 2, 2008 10:59 PM EDT reply actions

i'm not sure i follow

if tony pulls wainwright before pitching to michaels he would be in line for the win

by briangunn on Jun 2, 2008 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions

just stupid

i love tony, but we just really need a different style of manager. 13 years of overmanaging games wears on a fan, combined with his love affair with washed up POS veterans… I mean it is obvious the future of this organization is in its youth and we all know how poorly tony deals with youth. I know we may still have a solid year, but after ‘09 tony MUST go, it’s very clear to me.

by thewizard3 on Jun 2, 2008 11:01 PM EDT reply actions

Pin another one on TLR

well, the genius did it again! Screw the low pitch count, screw saving the effing bullpen, screw trying to get your starter a win when he was obviously laboring, screw Molina for going away from the curve, screw TLR for leaving Wainwright in after the 1st walk of the 7th AND then brought him back for the 8th…WTF! I don’t care what anyone says, whether its early on in the season or not, EVERY game counts & this was an absolute HORRIBLE loss, especially when a team is up 4 w/2 outs in the 7th home. His decisions are completely baffling. 99% of the time the mgr pulls the guy, but not Tony, why would you think of possibly bringing the tying run to the plate when your guy is OBVIOUSLY struggling. I would have much rather seen the bullpen blow that game with fresh arms than what happened. This one really stings and least it shouldnt have went down the way that it did. 100% TLR’s fault.

by buzzburton33 on Jun 2, 2008 11:14 PM EDT reply actions

I don't agree

I think the offense started taking poor AB’s once they got that 4-0 lead….............

They allowed Pitt to stay in the game.

I don’t know Wainer is your horse so you think he can get through things….. I don’t know if some reliver coughs it up I suppose people will second guess him…..

Oh yeah the Cubs are going to win tonight, big Z is pumped and he is starting to deal

by ICbirdfan on Jun 2, 2008 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Starting tonight I don't give a crap if the Cubs win or not.

They are clearly a great team playing red hot baseball and will probably run away with the Central. We have to focus on winning to keep up with teams like the Braves, Marlins, Mets, ect so we can get the wild card. We’ll just drive ourselves crazy trying to follow the Cubs….let them have their run, as long as we can get the Wild Card I’ll be happy….anything can happen in October.

by KYCards on Jun 2, 2008 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Did you?

Physically watch the game or did u keep up on gameday or something because as soon as he gave up the double, I was concerned. If you were watching, you have to admit that Adam was having trouble. Or not, Im just stating what I saw.

typical

FSN is defending Tony.

bullshit.

you know, i expect as much from Bernie, but The Cat? i never thought he was a Tony apologist before.

i’d freaking kill to have a press pass just so i could show those spineless wussies how to cover a team. i’d lose it after one day, but i wouldn’t take any of Tony’s shit, and i damn sure wouldn’t try & cover his ass after his single handily blew a sure win.

why i agree that they let gorzelliannyellyy off the hook

Adam was cruising, the game was in hand till he got tired & started losing his control. if Tony has a quick hook with Adam like he does with Joel, we are celebrating a win tonight. 4 runs was more than enough to win that game. Pitt had no pulse, no sighs of life, till Tony let them back in by hanging Adam out to dry.

Just wait

theyll hit their swoon, they always do. They cant keep it up much longer, especially with the starters, Marquis will blow up, Lilly will revert back to sub 500 & Dempster’s pitching out of his butt. Their rotation is definitely overachieving, but you could say that about the Cards too.

by buzzburton33 on Jun 2, 2008 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions

...the wind blows out for the visiting team too...

...da Kubs will have a lousy stretch on the defensive side of the ball that will run parallel to a real tough stretch for starting pitching…pitch counts are already high for the number 1,2 and 3 starters. Then come the injuries….its a long season.
