Hopeful...

Nice one, Flores

Now we send out LaRue, Kennedy, and Izturis to get the lead!

by liam on Jun 19, 2008 4:13 PM EDT reply actions

Alright, you know

Flores can kiss my backside. I can like him because he threw us a ball at a game earlier this year (alteast, I think it was to us. He aimed 30 feet left of us and it ended up coming back to us) but when people are on base, he can’t find the strikezone, when he comes in clean, he dominates.

Look at the Royals lineup, and then look at ours.

by mattyfrommo on Jun 19, 2008 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Hate to be the messenger but...

...this looks like the point in the season we’ll look back to and circle as the start of a downward spiral.

Before Royals series: 13 games over .500, just took 2 of 3 from the Phillies, day off and a three game set at home against the Royals ahead

After Royals series: 10 games over .500, just got swept by the Royals, scored 4 runs in 3 games against one of the worst teams in MLB, oif to a three game set on the road against the Red Sox

I apologize for reciting what everyone knows (and probably feels), but this series had just so much of a different vibe than the whole season, and I don’t want it to be contagious.

It looks like a bump in the road now, but when we’re looking back in a month or two and clawing for every victory, we’re going to kick ourselves for this series.

by IsThisHeaven on Jun 19, 2008 7:19 PM EDT reply actions

I also think we may be in for a losing streak

But there has been about 5 different occasions this year when people have started to believe “this is the beginning of the end” most notably, after series against the Giants and Pirates. If there is one thing this team has proved that it is, it is resilient. I think we very well may lose 10 in a row, but I also think this is the kind of team that will get a spark when it’s healthy again, and is capable of winning in bunches again.

Normally, that would be true....

...but I’d hate myself if I “called the Cardinals downslide.” Would much rather be the one to call it when they took off, never to look back and win the World Series. I’m just venting my worries a little bit.

by Tackle Box on Jun 19, 2008 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

that series was the very definition of embarrassing

our starters were very good, while the pen & the O just crapped all over the diamond.

i knew the O would drop off losing Albert, but i was holding on to the hope that they’d be better than this. of course the Yankees O went through the same thing when ARod went on the DL. and their line up is arguably better than the Cards.

these next 3 series are going to be fun**

as noted by lb elsewhere,

the offense has largely gone awol on plate discipline. can’t make up for albert by swinging at bad pitches and the team has been doing that more and more. it certainly seems to be the root of ludwick’s and ankiel’s problems in particular. maybe they each need a few days off. fewer walks and more strikeouts are not the way they garnered their success, so hope they regain their eyes and patience soon.

Interesting analysis

Here’s what Future Redbirds thinks:

http://futureredbirds.com/2008/06/19/prospects-by-position-first-base/

Josh Phelps – Josh was a pretty decent prospect for Toronto in the early part of this decade, although he was never much of a catcher, which is how he made his first appearances in the big leagues. As a 1B/DH, though, he had some promise, putting up OPS+ of 138 and 113 his first two full seasons in the league. He has bounced around a bit since then, but has hit everywhere he’s gone. His career numbers are .273/.344/.476, which is pretty respectable. The Cardinals are really a pretty bad fit for him since we have a glut of corner outfielders (Duncan and Mather) that can pull playing time at first while Albert is out. It seems to me that a trade to a team like the Royals would be perfect for all interested parties.

I am guessing

they only needed Thompson for an emergency start. They probably sent him back down so he can continue to get stretched out as a starter if they need him again. Parisi probably goes back into the bullpen as the long reliever. He did do pretty good coming out of the pen. I am never ready to give up on someone just because they blew up during their first shot at starting in the bigs. If that was the case, there would be a ton of good pitchers that never got a real chance.
All that being said, he better be back in the pen.

Bingo

Thompson was brought up for an emergency start. He took Wellemeyer’s spot. Wellemeyer is not on the DL. Wellemeyer will be making his next start. (pending elbow, which I guess can be said about all of our starters.)

Tony had nothing but praise for the job Thompson did. And he is going down to Memphis to continue starting. Parisi is being brought up to be in the pen. If they expected to need another start for Wellemeyer they would have kept Thompson up. But they need arms for the pen. And Thompson isnt going to be ready to pitch for a few days. And going down to Memphis he’ll be able to continue working thwards being a starter and not a releaver.

by Tackle Box on Jun 19, 2008 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

A guess

Mitchell Boggs has been pretty solid through about four innings in his starts and Parisi was pretty solid as a long reliever.

Boggs’ next start is on Saturday, Parisi’s next start in Memphis would have been on Saturday.

Maybe the Cards are thinking of going with a 7-8 inning pitching tandem between Boggs and Parisi on Saturday and every fourth or fifth day while Wainwright’s on the DL. I’d be very interested to see how that goes.

by liam on Jun 19, 2008 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

With all this movement

I’m confused as to who is actually on the 25. Is Boggs still up? Cause if he isn’t, i wouldn’t be surprised to see Parisi sent down after tomorrows game for Boggs’ start.

I think he could do a good job

if they told him to go out there to pitch four innings. In relief he was dialing his FB up to 96. On a 50-65 or so pitch count, he could afford to bring it like that.

And while we’re being all supporting-our-arguments-with-facts n’ shit, his stats through innings 1-4 is a small but sucky line of 8IP, 3K, 4BB, 1HR.

by liam on Jun 19, 2008 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

They'll never do it

They’re stuck with huge contracts in a market that is now demanding them to win it all every year. they don’t have the luxury to build from within anymore and they’re unlikely to be bad enough to stockpile top draft picks like the Rays have.

In Tampa/St. Pete, no one cared they sucked. In Chicago, they kill someone if they do.

by Tackle Box on Jun 19, 2008 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Everyone's building from within now

They friggin’ Yankees and Red Sox are doing a heckuva job of it, too, early returns notwithstanding.

by liam on Jun 19, 2008 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

The cubs aren't

They haven’t gotten the memo. They’re farm system is in shambles and they’re loaded to the gills with bad contracts they just singned the past two years that last the better part of the next decade.

by Tackle Box on Jun 20, 2008 1:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Absolutely

If they don’t win this year they are truly, truly in a world of hurt.

For that reason, I would be completely unsurprised if they made an all-out run for Sabathia, and with the state of their farm system, they’d need to give up some of their MLB offense to get it done.

by liam on Jun 20, 2008 3:29 AM EDT up reply actions

If I were the Indians

and the cubs came calling, I’d start the conversation with Sean Gallagher, and then keep going. Problem is, after him, they don’t have much in the way of attractive prospects. Cedeno would probably be in the deal or Eric Patterson (I’d probably rather have Cedeno, but Lou never gives Patterson a chance to play when he’s up for me to make a definitive decision about him).

There’s no way they trade Soto, and he’s it as far as attractive players on the current roster. Lee, Soriano, Fukudome, Ramirez are all cornerstones and they won’t move ‘em. Theriot and Fontenot as well as Hoffpauir and Murton don’t really excite me much.

It’s not easy looking at that system and trying to figure out who you’d want that would realistically be available. Bobby Howry might be someone you could include, but he doesn’t help the closer situation in Cleveland and, quite frankly, they’ve been down that path with Howry before. Scott Eyre sucks. Carlos Marmol and Kerry Wood are untouchable at this point.

I wouldn’t want to be Cleveland knowing the cubs are quite possibly the best option and that’s what you have to pick from. Honestly, they’d be better off keeping C.C. and getting the draft picks as compensation.

by Tackle Box on Jun 20, 2008 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions

I have friends

who are Cub fans ( they do have other redeeming qualities) that are already calling for Soriano to be traded. The same ones who were saying it was a great contract when they signed him, I laugh and say ” I told you so”

they’ve paid him through 2014. 32 now, he’ll be 38 by then! i believe that players on average start declining at age 29. with his career .282/.327/.518 line, i think the middle number is the thing that’s going to kill them. league-average OBP – the dude just doesn’t walk. as he ages, his body and his bat speed will betray him as it does everyone and he’s going to be left to rely on a skill he never developed to avoid recording outs. i think it’s gonna be a long road for the cubs with him.

Is that a bad thing?

This team seems to play down to competition like the Giants/Pirates/Royals, and plays better when they are playing teams that they have to “prove themselves” against. For instance, while I still think we are in for a beating in Fenway (The Sox have lost only like 7 games at home), it wouldn’t be that surprising to me if we took 2 out of 3

Long ass summer = Exhaustion

Not, “be prepared for ass whippings”. But it’s going to be a lot of “this game counts” and every loss is going to be costly.

I’m being a little liberal on who i’d think may make wildcard noise, and it shakes out as almost 2-1 in games we have left.

Without hearing a velocity report

here is what I took away from Mark Mulder’s performance tonight in Memphis:

-The right side of the Memphis infield is awful. Never again let me call for Houff or Phelps to be called up. Both of them made to questionable defensive plays that cost Mark anywhere from 2-5 runs and 15-20 pitches, depending on if either actually made the play.
-His curveball isn’t there yet. It comes and goes as it pleases. Sometimes it will be nasty, sometimes it will betray him and he can’t hit the backstop with it if he tried.
-His fastball is good. It rides in on batters and has good sink. He broke some bats, gave up some seeing eye singles and in the first inning they all added up.

Without knowing if his velocity had greatly decreased, I will say that he looked better than Brad Thompson did in Memphis. He looked better than Mike Parisi did starting in St. Louis. And until this recent resurgence, he looked better than Braden Looper did for much of the year.

If he had the defense pick him up in the first inning, we’d probably be 100% considering his return in the Detroit series.

One quick question

When you say his fastball “rides in on batters” are you talking about lefties or righties? It’s been so long since I’ve seen him pitch, I don’t remember whether he features a two-seamer or a cutter (or both?)...
