before this homestand began, i would have taken a 3-3 record --- lose 2 of 3 to the phillies, win 2 of 3 from the royals. if they can muster a win today (which is far from assured, i don't need to tell you) they'll still end up with a 3-3, homestand, albeit by diff'nt means. . . . .
if reyes had taken the start today, he would have been the 9th starting pitcher the cards have used this year. in 2007 they used their 9th starting pitcher (mike maroth) in game # 73 . . . . .

Dan during pregame
“Big question for the Cards is how deep Brad Thompson can go in this game”
I’d say he could average 350 feet but might touch 410 later in the game.

Has anyone else seen Skip ridiculous day/night split?
Day: .256/.323/.344
Night: .347/.406/.507
Clearly, he should never start day games.
by Hardcore Legend on Jun 19, 2008 2:07 PM EDT 0 recs
P-D
Had a stat that said he has the second highest average against RHP, behind only Chipper. So he can correct that day-night split today.

I had forgotten that they have splits
Skip is 2nd against RHP if you limit to at least 150 PA

pardon me for being out of the loop
but when and why did the reyes/thompson change take place?
go cards, o's, and phillies.

Elbow
Reyes had elbow discomfort after pitching in relief Sunday or whatever day that was. Last night it was released that he was going on 15 day DL, Thompson called up to start.

Which is interesting that Reyes caught
what Thompson had. A big case of the ‘we don’t want you pitching but we need your roster spot’-itis.

Agreed
There appears to have been rampant abuse of the DL by the Cards this season. Is this to become the first signature tactic of the Mozeliak administration?

Probably
but it must have been something. TLR and Duncan have had others pitch with elbow discomfort, most recently Wellemeyer. That coupled with Thompson not really being rehabbed yet makes me think Reyes must have been in more pain than he let on for the switch to happen.
But then again, only LaDunc knows.

What I found funny
was that Tony said to never take a chance with a pitcher as a reason for Reyes not getting the call. Reyes said he could do it. With Wellemeyer, Tony took a chance…
Still think this Reyes situation is crappy all around.

except it drops by the minute with their silly behavior towards him........
They are behaving in a way unbecoming to a “professional” organization. Time for Mr. Mozeliak to pull the plug and if he doesn’t, Mr. DeWitt needs to step in.

I can't wait until we face a lefty
then maybe TLR will pause when just penciling Duncan in as the 1B.

Could TLR move Duncan up to the #2 hole?
I know Albert’s not #3, but Luddy is, maybe he’d get to see more meat up there? Just thinking out loud here…

I had a feeling I might get the ol' "protection...does it exist?" argument
Maybe it would help him psychologically? As long as Dunc doesn’t read that article, and he thinks he’s gonna see better stuff to hit, could that help?

Our offense is shit right now with no Pujols or Molina
We’ve scored 3 runs in 2 games against the Royals. Would a little tinkering make it that much worse?

“that much” can be a matter of inches, but i wouldn’t see the point of doing anything which would only have a historical expectation of making things worse.

looked a bit ugly on that fly ball. Was he running downhill?

rather than play the ball off the wall
he overran it and the ricochet (sp?) got past him back into center field

Arms flailing, legs kicking out
he was running fast, but looked awkward…stopped short of the wall and let it bounce…

Picture a ball hit to the base of the wall
Then picture Ankiel running all the way to the wall just after it hits the wall and then turns around to watch it roll away while Skip picks it up.

There was a sizable contingent around here who argued that Thompson should be in the STL rotation over Wellemeyer.

Well, since other than Mr Redbird, I am the only one who's said it
It’s more a reflection of the whole thing yesterday with people bitching about him starting this game in the first place. I figured I’d become a Brad Thompson cheerleader since the guy shuts his mouth, does whatever is asked of him and usually does much better than expected. Unlike another pitcher on the roster I will not name.

Any possibility Rasmus could be called up for the AL road trip??
would like to have his bat in the line-up for these games.
by KYCards on Jun 19, 2008 2:34 PM EDT 0 recs
Knowing Tony
we will probably STILL carry 13 pitchers on the road trip, even though we don’t need that many in the AL games and that Mulder is likely to be activated next week, giving us a fresh arm anyways should the bullpen get burned.

You need more of a bench
when Duncan, Kennedy, Miles and LaRue are likely options to start (should Molina have lingering effects).

no
he said you need less pitchers, which since you don’t PH for a pitcher they typically go longer, you need smaller everything in AL Play

That's exactly what I said
we do need more of a bench, especially with the extra position player hitting anyways. Our lineup is extremely weak and we need more offense available.

Compared to the Sox and Detroit lineup
the cards are going to look pretty pathetic. We NEED molina and Yadi instead of Duncan and LaRue so badly.

he can hit 5 within the span of the week. In case you haven’t noticed he’s very streaky.
