I'm in an awful hurry at the moment, everyone. I'm actually writing this up on my phone, and I don't know how to insert images and things like that, so please forgive the lack of info and/or graphics here. If one of the other editors would like to toss up pics and whatnot, go ahead. I just won't have a chance to put this up later, and I wanted to make sure there was at least a thread up. Go Cards!

Pitching Match UP

Braden Looper

  • RHP * (8-5) 4.34 ERA

Brian Bannister * RHP * (5-6) 5.00 ERA

So says, Titus Pullo (formerly The Dude)

by Titus Pullo on Jun 18, 2008 5:07 PM EDT   0 recs

looper: 4.12 FIP, 4.74 xFIP
bannister: 4.24 FIP, 4.38 xFIP

looper’s FIP links well with his ERA, but the xFIP difference could indicate that he’s due to regress on home runs. his 2007 HR/FB was 10.2%, but he’s 7.4% so far in 2008. the NL is currently averaging 12%, and HR/FB is considered to be much more about fly balls allowed and park effects than pitcher skill. his 2008 47.8 GB% vs a 2007 42.2 might be credited to him, though and approaches his career average.

bannister is right in line between FIP and xFIP, but his ERA looks much higher than it “should” be.

Anyone see the MLB page on espn.com?

he is an honorable mention though

odd they use him as the main photo yet they don’t have him in the main 9 list….stupid ESPN

Every year...

Bud Selig hands us the gift of playing KC three or six times and every year (except ‘02 and ‘04) we fail to take advantage. We’ve played KC 46 times over the past 12 years and are only 26-20. That isn’t good enough…

What's with Reyes? Situation??

Reyes has had more ups and downs than a whore’s drawers

is having his elbow examined today. I think his “M”-shaped delivery may have something to do with it…

Snice I missed Looper pitching last night...

I think I’ll head to the ball game again tonight.

by Evilfrog on Jun 18, 2008 5:54 PM EDT   0 recs

He skipped his start yesterday because he knew you couldn't make it.

That was a real test," Soriano said of the play. "He didn’t call the ball, I didn’t call the ball, but I saw him close to the ball and I let him get the ball."

Edmonds update:

Putting up a 409 /449/727 line over his last 15 games with nine XBHs.

The man is back.

by guayzimi on Jun 18, 2008 5:59 PM EDT   0 recs

But, man, his streaks

are something to behold. That streak he went on in October 2006 really came in handy, for instance.

So says, Titus Pullo (formerly The Dude)

by Titus Pullo on Jun 18, 2008 6:07 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Oh trust me

they are glorious. I don’t dispute that he can carry a club when he gets going but the ‘bottoming out’ is so much more severe now that his body can’t take the everyday grind.

He and Rick subscribe to the theory of ‘the better you see the ball, the better you can hit it’ on pitches up near their eyes.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 18, 2008 6:13 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Someone already called this

He is going to post a great line for 20 days than live off those numbers for the rest of the season

Did Anybody Catch This on ESPN?

http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?id=3450245

I’ll be honest, I’ve said on a time or two that I’d like for the catcher to just… miss a pitch and let the Umpire have a reality check. Especially when the umpire is always putting his hand on the catcher’s back. I was a catcher for years, and I think I would politely ask him to not put his hand on my back… maybe two times. Any more after that, and I’d have to consider letting him eat a pitch.

by mynameistyler on Jun 18, 2008 6:15 PM EDT   0 recs

wow

just wow – I am surprised that someone has not tried this prior though.

by njnick on Jun 18, 2008 6:23 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Oh, I am sure they have.

They were just better actors. Heck, I have even seen Yadi deflect a pitch off his glove that just “happens” to hit the umpire. Maybe it was an accident, maybe it wasn’t. Who knows. But, that is the point.

The problem is that the catcher didn’t even try to catch it and so it was clearly intentional. But, if you put your glove up and miss … well, I am sure that has happened many times before.

by Egyptian on Jun 18, 2008 6:52 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

The classic way to do it

is for pitcher and catcher to “disagree” on whether a pitchout has been called. There’s a classic blooper reel of an ump getting a cup check this way.

On at least one occasion when it happened, pitcher and catcher both got tossed. There’s footage on that one too.

by StanTheManFan on Jun 18, 2008 9:46 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

that's what the catcher claimed

said he thought it was a curve ball. Didn’t keep him from getting fined or from losing the opportunity to play college ball…

Aaron Miles is playing SS again

tonight. Is TLR loading up on LHB again? He can’t possibly think that Miles is a better SS than Ryan.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 18, 2008 6:38 PM EDT   0 recs

Ryan needs to be an everyday player

there’s no reason he shouldn’t be

Ankiel is Jesus!

by Cards Fan in Chitown on Jun 18, 2008 7:23 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm seriously pissed off about this

there is no reason Mini Me should ever play SS.

WTF is Ryan? seriously stop the madness Tony.

I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!

by gdm426 on Jun 18, 2008 8:32 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

he should be the emergency SS

as he is the emergency C and emergency RP. Starting him w/ 2 healthy, better SS’s on the bench is absolutely absurd.

Quick question

So is Reyes injured too now? Does this mean Wellemeyer is back to starting tomorrow? Or someone else?

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Jun 18, 2008 6:54 PM EDT   0 recs

Cool, thanks

This is just my opinion. I could easily be wrong.

by NYRoyal on Jun 18, 2008 7:08 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

The way he has been pitching

I really don’t want to see Thompson, He is doing bad in AAA so how could he do better in the Majors

by FlimtotheFlam on Jun 18, 2008 7:40 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I wonder how long the Giants are going to keep dragging Zito out

to the mound. He went two innings and gave up 5 ER w/ 5 hits and 4 walks today. ERA over 6, WHIP around 2, BAA well over .300 – it’s just plain ugly.

by BTown Birds fan on Jun 18, 2008 7:25 PM EDT   0 recs

Well...

I think when the D-Backs cut Russ Ortiz a couple years ago with $22 million left on his contract it was the largest contract ever eaten by a club, at least at that time. Zito has around $111 million left on his.

I’m sure they’ll do a bullpen stint, and a faux injury, and a rehab, and a relapse etc etc…

by guayzimi on Jun 18, 2008 7:30 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, I guess I should have said how long they would keep having him start

I figured they’d have already put him in the bullpen by now and let him throw a little bit in mop-up situations. All of his 1-3 inning starts have to be absolutely killing their bullpen.

I think they already had him in the bullpen really briefly, then put him back in the rotation after just a couple appearances, right? It doesn’t seem to have helped much….

by BTown Birds fan on Jun 18, 2008 7:36 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

The fact is that a 83 MPH fastball ain't gonna fool anyone in the bigs.

At least Zito is financially secure for a long time to come.

That was a real test," Soriano said of the play. "He didn’t call the ball, I didn’t call the ball, but I saw him close to the ball and I let him get the ball."

Great Article about over stocked Farm System

Here is a good read before the game about the Rangers overstocked Farm system and the problems it creates it making trades. You wouldn’t think having too many good players would make a problem in trading but he makes a good case against it.

GO RAYS!!!

5-2 with 1 out and 2 on in the 3rd

That was a real test," Soriano said of the play. "He didn’t call the ball, I didn’t call the ball, but I saw him close to the ball and I let him get the ball."

hopefully Zambrano will beat derosa up in the dugout

forcing Hendry to trade derosa to the padres, and then the padres can give us edgar v gonzalez back.

+1

then perhaps trade Jim Edmonds to some nice American Leage team with a homer happy ballpark, and Jim Edmonds goes on to have monster years this year and next, finding himself always worth a mention somewhere after Rick Ankiel as one of the game’s best centerfielders.

by infallibleopiniongenerator on Jun 18, 2008 8:17 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Apparently -

Edmonds has a groin, or a hammie, or an ankle, or something. They just pulled him out of the game. It doesn’t take much, does it?

I think we may see another scene like the picture next to my posts.

what the Cat just said pretty much confirms the fact

that Tony & Dave will do any thing they can to keep him from pitching for the Cards

has elbow inflammation, confirmed won't start tomorrow

likely thompson.

reyes quoted as saying the inflammation is something he’s been pitching through, and he felt like he could start tomorrow, but it wasn’t really his decision.

didn’t seem that sinister to me.

Anthony told the Cat he could pitch, but Tony told him he can't

apparently he’s been pitching with some minor elbow inflammation, and it’s no big deal.

except to Tony & Dave

hilarious

if anthony tried to pitch through pain, and got hurt, it’d be Tony & Dave’s fault, and it’s also Tony and Dave’s fault for not letting him pitch through pain.
