Game 72 Open Thread- 18th June, 2008

| Bannister | Looper |
| 5-6, 5.00 | 8-5, 4.34 |
I'm in an awful hurry at the moment, everyone. I'm actually writing this up on my phone, and I don't know how to insert images and things like that, so please forgive the lack of info and/or graphics here. If one of the other editors would like to toss up pics and whatnot, go ahead. I just won't have a chance to put this up later, and I wanted to make sure there was at least a thread up. Go Cards!

Pitching Match UP
Braden Looper
- RHP * (8-5) 4.34 ERA

Brian Bannister
* RHP
* (5-6) 5.00 ERA
So says, Titus Pullo (formerly The Dude)
by Titus Pullo on Jun 18, 2008 5:07 PM EDT 0 recs
looper: 4.12 FIP, 4.74 xFIP
bannister: 4.24 FIP, 4.38 xFIP
looper’s FIP links well with his ERA, but the xFIP difference could indicate that he’s due to regress on home runs. his 2007 HR/FB was 10.2%, but he’s 7.4% so far in 2008. the NL is currently averaging 12%, and HR/FB is considered to be much more about fly balls allowed and park effects than pitcher skill. his 2008 47.8 GB% vs a 2007 42.2 might be credited to him, though and approaches his career average.
bannister is right in line between FIP and xFIP, but his ERA looks much higher than it “should” be.

Every year...
Bud Selig hands us the gift of playing KC three or six times and every year (except ‘02 and ‘04) we fail to take advantage. We’ve played KC 46 times over the past 12 years and are only 26-20. That isn’t good enough…

Oh trust me
they are glorious. I don’t dispute that he can carry a club when he gets going but the ‘bottoming out’ is so much more severe now that his body can’t take the everyday grind.
He and Rick subscribe to the theory of ‘the better you see the ball, the better you can hit it’ on pitches up near their eyes.

Did Anybody Catch This on ESPN?
http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?id=3450245
I’ll be honest, I’ve said on a time or two that I’d like for the catcher to just… miss a pitch and let the Umpire have a reality check. Especially when the umpire is always putting his hand on the catcher’s back. I was a catcher for years, and I think I would politely ask him to not put his hand on my back… maybe two times. Any more after that, and I’d have to consider letting him eat a pitch.

Oh, I am sure they have.
They were just better actors. Heck, I have even seen Yadi deflect a pitch off his glove that just “happens” to hit the umpire. Maybe it was an accident, maybe it wasn’t. Who knows. But, that is the point.
The problem is that the catcher didn’t even try to catch it and so it was clearly intentional. But, if you put your glove up and miss … well, I am sure that has happened many times before.

The classic way to do it
is for pitcher and catcher to “disagree” on whether a pitchout has been called. There’s a classic blooper reel of an ump getting a cup check this way.
On at least one occasion when it happened, pitcher and catcher both got tossed. There’s footage on that one too.

I wonder how long the Giants are going to keep dragging Zito out
to the mound. He went two innings and gave up 5 ER w/ 5 hits and 4 walks today. ERA over 6, WHIP around 2, BAA well over .300 – it’s just plain ugly.
by BTown Birds fan on Jun 18, 2008 7:25 PM EDT 0 recs
Well...
I think when the D-Backs cut Russ Ortiz a couple years ago with $22 million left on his contract it was the largest contract ever eaten by a club, at least at that time. Zito has around $111 million left on his.
I’m sure they’ll do a bullpen stint, and a faux injury, and a rehab, and a relapse etc etc…

Yeah, I guess I should have said how long they would keep having him start
I figured they’d have already put him in the bullpen by now and let him throw a little bit in mop-up situations. All of his 1-3 inning starts have to be absolutely killing their bullpen.
I think they already had him in the bullpen really briefly, then put him back in the rotation after just a couple appearances, right? It doesn’t seem to have helped much….

The fact is that a 83 MPH fastball ain't gonna fool anyone in the bigs.
At least Zito is financially secure for a long time to come.

Great Article about over stocked Farm System
Here is a good read before the game about the Rangers overstocked Farm system and the problems it creates it making trades. You wouldn’t think having too many good players would make a problem in trading but he makes a good case against it.

then perhaps trade Jim Edmonds to some nice American Leage team with a homer happy ballpark, and Jim Edmonds goes on to have monster years this year and next, finding himself always worth a mention somewhere after Rick Ankiel as one of the game’s best centerfielders.
