Question about WHIP

First off sorry if this is a waste of a fan post but I have no idea where to ask this here.

Anyway, as I understand it HBP are not calculated into WHIP, but why arnt they?

Shouldnt that be added into it?

I know its Walks and Hits per Innings Pitched, but wouldnt HBP also show how well or poorly a pitcher is performing?

Tonight on my FBB team Izzy hit a batter (yeah, I know.  Why is he still on your team and why in hell is he activated) but still has a 0.00 WHIP on the night.

I think you answered your own question there.

Even if it were indicative of some flaw, HBP would be a pretty insignificant component of WHIP. Last year, it would’ve raised Wainwright’s from ~1.39 to ~1.44. He had 9 HBP, and maybe someone else can remember how many of those happened because of wildness and how many happened because batters are armoring up and leaning into the freeway.

FIP

FYI, FIP does use HPB in its calculations. And as BAW mentioned, there will generally be only limited influence of HBP on WHIP.

you said you’re using WHIP for fantasy baseball, but you might appreciate this link anyway if you haven’t already read it: http://ussmariner.com/2006/08/29/evaluating-pitcher-talent/

i appreciate the post

simply because i didn’t know what WHIP was before now. so does it take into account the number of bases reached on a hit, or just that it happened?

Isn't HBP indicative of a flaw?

Agreed that adding HBP to WHIP would have a very small effect, but shouldn’t that effect still be included?
Hitting a lot of batters a poor sign just as walking a lot of batters is.
And we can debate how many happen because of wildness and how many happen because batters are crowding the plate, but we can have a similar debate for how many walks happen because of wildness and how many happen because of umpire strike zone variance, among other factors.
Either way, HBP or walk, the guy is on first. HBP should be included.
