i'd say he saw that one perfectly.

he saw a ball, low, which it was. and the umpire blew the call.

I get tired of it too,

but the team brought it on themselves. The kid is clearly, CLEARLY not an MLB quality player. Yet, he is now our everyday first baseman for at least a month. On top of that, you have his dad in the dugout. So, it is no surprise to me that the Duncan bashing is as bad as it is. The most likely possibility here is that the Cardinals are playing favorites with Duncan. That doesn’t sit well.

But then, even when given the chance, Duncan is wasting it and is a rally killer. Glaus knows he has to swing with runners on base because Duncan is a sure out behind him. Glaus might as well have the pitcher batting behind him.

The Duncan bashing needs to continue to let management know the fans are not going to put up with this nepotism.

TLR Sucks!

Play the matchups even though the guy you put out there is terrible. His effing managing style HAS to change according to the personnel that youve got, not because of a % that is BS, when the highest % of those situations show that the guys he puts out there fail most of the time. UFB how many losses per year this team can blame on TLR. Im so sick of it.

deserve to pitch?

first, I’m serious, call out this crap beforehand if you’re going to say the 4th winningest manager “sucks.”

Second, this is baseball dude. You can’t throw the best guy out there all the time. What’s the use of having someone on the team if you don’t use him? If he sucks some more they’ll get rid of him. But you can’t get rid of a guy until he fails consistently.

Look, Tony gives guys chances to succeed even after they have failed recently. By your logic you’re more likely to win this game, but then make your good players more tired and give your poor players less confidence. That’s a formula for a team that loses down the stretch because they never got a confidence booster.

by enoscountry on Jun 17, 2008 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

DESERVE being the key word there

if the team is UP one maybe, ahead 2 you probably pitch Villone there, but not in a tie game.

Second, I understand that this is baseball & the last time I checked, most teams usually put the players in that give you the BEST chance of success in a given situation, so no, I CANNOT according to my logic let Villone pitch in that situation. PLEASE tell me that you agree with putting Villone in there, it will make me sleep better.

Here is the problem

He brought him in for the lefty originally, but in a game that will probably go to extras you can’t use 1 pitcher for 1 AB. So he kept him in there, he knew this before he sent villone in.

What he should have done is have a decent righty, who probably isn’t that much worse (maybe better) against leftys than villone and a heck of a lot better against their hottest hitter in their lineup.

Bernie's got a good take on this

let DUNK get all the starts & at bats while the Cards face all these righty’s & AL teams. if at the end of this run, he still sucks, and he’s still on the team. then we can start saying his dad is the one keeping him on the team.

and i agree with that. the Cards will really be under the gun if DUNK doesn’t start to hit by then. albert’s on the shelf, there’s a ton of righty’s & AL teams coming up. this is a good test for him. if he fails, then he should go back to Memphis. if he does hits, keep him around. if he fails & doesn’t go back to Memphis, then what every one is thinking will be probably the truth. he’s only with the Cards because his dad is the pitching coach.

The Duncan situation reminds me of that scene in Little Big League

The kid manager keeps playing his favorite player despite him being washed-up and old. There’s a scene where he gets a single, and the kid is really excited and thinks this may be the beginning of the turnaround. The bench coach says “You’re getting this excited over a seeing-eye single” and the kid decides to drop him. That kind of sums up how I think TLR feels about Dunc

I put the blame more on Tony than I do on Villone

Villone got beat, but that kid can hit and screamed out of AAA for the Royals.

Besides Philly and a couple of games a while back, Villone’s generally been a bulldog. But against someone with that hot of a bat in the 8th inning, you look for K-Mac, or Perez.

I don't get to watch much because

I live in KY (I get the Reds games) and can’t afford MLB extra innings right now. But if I could watch, I would not be looking forward to the Red Sox Series at all. The Red Sox are like the Cubs this year…in that they just don’t seem to loose at home and they score a lot of runs there. If our “big bats” don’t get going it’s setting up to be a Boston mascare I’m afraid..I hope I’m wrong.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 18, 2008 9:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Sigh...

Chris Duncan is the new Juan Encarnacion. It doesn’t matter what he does, a lot of you are going to hate him. I realize he’s sucking right now, but at least he has the ABILITY to be an everyday player. He just needs more time, and if Pujols weren’t hurt, he’d be getting it at the AAA level.

I understand he’s playing like crap. But do any of you honestly feel that they should be bringing up some of their AA and AAA guys to play 1b when they don’t even play that position in AA or AAA? I saw one commenter saying he’d even prefer Rasmus over Duncan at 1b. Seriously? Or burning an option on Bryan Anderson to play him at 1b? Seriously? Or Looper at first?

Honestly, give it time. If Duncan continues to stink, then by all means do something about it. But man, he needs to get himself untracked and this might be his best opportunity to do it. It’s certainly a better option than playing somebody who doesn’t even normally play 1b or burning an option year on a prospect just to have him play.

Like I said, if Duncan continues to be terrible, you could very well justify bringing up Freese or Allan Craig to play 3b and put Glaus at first…but give Duncan some time first. The brass obviously believes in him and he needs to get the benefit of the doubt because they want to see him succeed.

by mattisnotfrench on Jun 18, 2008 7:58 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

How much time do they give him?

I thought it was obvious that I meant I would rather have Rasmus, Mather,Freese, or Craig on the team instead of Duncan with Glaus sliding over to first base in Freese’s or maybe Craig’s case. I don’t think Rasmus should play first base but he has enough athletic ability that he could probably handle it (or Ludwick for that matter, Duncan isn’t exactly a world beater on D at first). I am pretty sure that I said I was mostly kidding about Looper.

So how much time do you give him? Since his OPS was last over .900 he has went 21-116 with 4 XBHs and 12 walks. His OPS now sits at .672 and his OPS+ at 79 (Miles and Izturis have OPS+ of 73!). That is not the production you need from your 1B when you are in contention (or ever for that matter).

I like Duncan. I wish we had the old Duncan back. I think he must still be hurt. Either that or he completely lost his stroke. I do not think he should be playing everyday at first base at the major league level while they HOPE he gets back to the old Duncan. Ability means nothing if you don’t produce.

albert is only on the 15-day DL, and that is the reason duncan is playing 1B.

FIP > ERA, OBP > AVG

by astrostl on Jun 19, 2008 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

whoops, didn’t mean to submit that alone.

i trust you’re aware of this fact, but i think it needs to be emphasized that he’s not stealing ABs from anyone more deserving on the 40-man roster. if this were a healthy mather in LF against a platooned and struggling duncan, i’d definitely support keeping mather and starting duncan every day in memphis but we’re talking about 1B.

glaus and mather aren’t natural 1Bs, and mather is apparently hurt too. i would downright hate the idea of starting the clock on rasmus to have him here for as short as 10 days, ditto any other legit prospects, and i don’t see the point of burning options on others who might be seen as water-treading and new to the major leagues because we can still tread with duncan and his potential upside is something we’ve already seen on a major league level.

FIP > ERA, OBP > AVG

by astrostl on Jun 19, 2008 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah, you have to

keep Rasmus up and keep him up if you are going to do that.
I know Glaus and Mather aren’t natural 1Bs, but Chris isn’t exactly a defensive wiz out there.
I am just saying having Duncan’s bat in the lineup everyday is not good for the team.
But oh well, fuck it.
