what’s the deal can’t or won’t throw strikes? tell the truth he has looked very tentative out there for quite a while.

by sportsman on Jun 15, 2008 4:54 PM EDT reply actions

little known fact

Due to a secret clause in the brock trade… the cubs are actually paying randy’s salary this year…

clause 3.5.1a(102): As terms of this trade agreement, should the traded player in question (Lou Brock) Somehow become a Hall of Fame Player the trading team (the Chicago Cubs) will be allowed to choose one relief pitcher to actually become a member of the trading team, without removing him from the roster of the trading partner (St, Louis Cardinals).

Jim Hendry, through the course of pulling his head out of his arse, in an attempt to understand the futility of the Loveable Northsiders’ was reviewing the trade agreement, hoping that he would learn a lesson of what not to do and stumbled upon the clause and insisted that it be enforced as it never seemed to have been in the past.

Easy Answer...

The Cubbies?
Since 2002 haven’t they had the bartman situation, plus a full-year of D Lee being injured after a career hitting season, and also got to watch the implosion of their two top prospect pitchers!
We, on the other hand have won a championship and been to the post-season a number of times plus the WS defeat… though I guess one could consider playoff defeats as “painful..”

Yet another bittersweet victory

I’m glad we won, but we’ve lost yet another key player on our team. By the looks of things, Yadi won’t be back any time soon.

I wish they’d call up Bryan Anderson, but reality says that they’ll call up Gabe or Mark (or whatever the hell his name) Johnson from AAA (A career minor leaguer)

totally agree

and while we’re at it, lets try to get them to throw in Gorzelanny. He’s been just about the worst starter in the major leagues this year, but has the stuff to be a true ace if he can get his mechanics right and not walk people. IE, he’s basically a PERFECT duncan rehab project, and he has an option left so we could send him down and work on him in the off-season/next spring.

Even this year, with his overall ~6.6 ERA, he’s held lefties to a very walk-heavy .257/.386/.343 (.729 OPS) w/no home runs, so if we can’t get marte, he might be a potential LOOGY option himself. FWIW he kept lefties to a .578 OPS last year.

Reyes for Gorzellany? Does that make sense?

BTW, Marte does have an option for ‘09, but at $6M I can’t see the pirates executing it. But we could.

meant to add

Gorzelanny’s .578 OPS last year vs LHB compares pretty well to Marte’s .572 career OPS vs lefties.

I saw Gorz pitch

in Louisville a few years ago when the Pirate franchise came in to play the Riverbats. First row seat right in front of the bullpen mound where he warmed up. He’s a moose (good sense of the word) with a fluid delivery and some real pop on his fast ball.
Not to over-state it, but he reminded me a bit of Steve Carlton. In any event, I had a reaction similar to the e-trade baby’s when he said, “I’m renting me a clown!” I said to myself, “this guy could be a Cardinal.”

We can also blame him for Yadi's injury

if he gets Utley out, we still have a 2 run lead and we aren’t forced to go home on that play at the plate.

I know that is not a rational way of looking at things, but I really dislike Randy Flores :P

Looking at the standings I was surprised to see the Cubs are “only” 7-3 in their last ten games. Seems like they’re winning just about every damn day. At least they have to go to Tampa Bay this week – maybe the Rays will slow them down a bit.

Winning the division would be best. And it’s not out of the question. But the Wild Card allows for solace. I’m old school and always believed winning the division was the only way to feel good about getting into the playoffs. But the last 5-6 years have altered my thinking. This team has moxie. Not matter what happens, if the Cards keep winning series, they’ll have a shot. That wasn’t the case 20 years ago.

His teammates were upbeat about it after the game…they are hearing that he’ll be OK, just sore.

but yadi did such an incredible job of blocking the plate- watch the highlights, it was truly the greatest play I’ve ever seen by a catcher- I don’t think he would have gotten to the plate. yadi had it completely blocked, AND he had the ball.

This play, by itself, should get Yadi a gold glove. if he survives.

I remember a play - you probably remember it, too - where Jack Clark (as a Card) just annihilated Scioscia at home plate. Scioscia held on to the ball and Clark was out … but Scioscia was out cold. Scioscia spent the night in the hospital (I think) and played the next day. Clark got up and was going back to the dugout and collapsed about halfway there. What a stupendous play!

At what point do we have to be concerned about the levies

in St. Louis. Apparently by Friday, the river will reach major flood stage in St. Louis and they believe that the levies currently will hold. However, should the flooding get worse, next weekend could be devastating to St. Louis.

But having seen what happened in New Orleans first-hand after the levees broke, I’d be very concerned about that for St. Louis. Almost three years later and it is is torn up all to hell down there…

St. Louis local here

Most of the city is well, well above the flood plain, even if the levees were to break. The stadium, for example, is far enough up that you won’t see a problem. Pinnacle wouldn’t have built Lumiere for $500 million+ if it was any worry of getting wet.

Pretty sure they’d let the east side flood before the west, too.

by rencelas on Jun 16, 2008 2:14 AM EDT up reply actions

There are people to be worried about on the east side too

I’m sure nothing sinister meant by that comment, but it’s still a legit concern even if it affects the Illinois side more.
