they have to take these games

when they can against overmatched opponents – win the games against the CIN and PIT’s of the world – and then when you can take 1 of 3 versus ARZ it doesn’t hurt as bad

interesting that

when Tony put Izturis in the game, he left BR at SS, and had Itz play 3rd.
Perhaps of insignificant note, since Ryan had already played 7 innings or so at short, but it spared me cussing TLR if he had done otherwise.

I've always agreed

the Loop will only rarely have unusually good games like this one, but he has never skanked on us that I remember; always answers the call, and I’m sure he hasn’t felt great in every start. Kind of like Soup, yes.
I noted that his biggest post-game smile (‘embrace’ if you will) was with Wellemeyer. Those two probably feel a lot of comradeship. I’d like to think that Looper has been a positive influence on Welly.

His thing was always trade for guys who were upcoming free agents then sign them long term. That worked wonders early in his career, but as the landscape of the game changed over the past 5-10 years, that became a worse and worse strategy.

But that's what I'm saying

His effectiveness as a GM was falling steadily over the past 5-10 years. The Mac, JEd, and Rolen deals were all fantastic (as well as the Woody Williams one, I might add). But things just changed on him. And he had that one terrible deal that’s still really fresh on everyone’s mind…

OK ok ok

Effectiveness as a GM? Besides the Mulder farce, what did he do wrong?

You can’t win every trade, it was bound to happen that someone…Haren…panned out. Guess who else panned out: Wainwright…that trade was made in the 2003 off-season, the Mulder one happened in the ‘04 off-season. Last 5 years declining? What??

it was the WORST trade in Cardinals history.

it’s just mind boggling. i mean, imagine how good the Cards would be if they still had Danny, Kiko. Barton would be at 1st now with Albert on the DL.

plus, look at what Mildews melt down did to the rotation in 06. look at how much money they’ve wasted on the guy.

the damage that one trade did will take years for the Cards to recover from

We made it once about 10-15 years ago with Josh Hancock and Tim Hudson on the team. That team was pretty good. And then for awhile we were decent under one coach, usually making the regionals, but never the super regionals or the finals. Then we got this one coach and shit just hit the fan. We haven’t even made the SEC tournament (top 8 teams out of 12) in many years. Since the last time we went, every other SEC team has made it.

We also have possibly the nicest college park in the nation. It’s beautiful

My favorite story is from Highlands

Idiot co-worker got in a fight with one of my buddies and got him kicked out there. Well my buddies brother happened to be a starting offensive lineman. So 10 minutes later, about 6 lineman were there hunting this guy down, but all they knew was that they were looking for a scrawny guy in a plaid shirt. So every dude in a plaid shirt was getting interogated for a while until we let them know who they were after – I turned in my 2 weeks a little before and I never liked the guy anyway.

They took it pretty easy on him but they sure scared the shit out of him. Pushed him around a little bit outside, that’s all.

the ESPN said he added it to stop tipping his pitches. Apparently it was easy to see how he was gripping the ball and know which pitch was coming in the past, so he added the glove thing to hide the pitch.

He’s been a reliever (closer) for the past couple of season. He hasn’t even used his windup since he was a starter. If he was tipping his pitches, it would have been out of the stretch and this wouldn’t help anything.

I think it was a very even trade

I just got confused at 12 AM about which young latin pitcher was involved in the trade.

I’ve got mancrushes on Lincecum and Volquez right now, but don’t tell them!

edinson volquez, who?

who here had any idea that edinson volquez would do what he has done? I had never heard of him, and I’d challenege anyone to show where they said “let’s trade {any cardinals OF for volquez}.

That trade in itself - despite what they gave up, esp since they have OF prospects that mitigate the loss - made me think twice about the way I’ve categorized Krivsky as an incompetent GM. When looking back over the history of his trades – many of which, like the kearns trade, caused me to mock him at the time – seem to have worked out better than I would have expected. And he picked up phillips and keppinger (and hamilton) for nothing.

I think, and am surprised to BE THINKING this, but krivsky -> jocketty is a major downgrade.

That's true

I do a bad enough job keeping up with the Cardinals’ minor league system, much less other teams’. Anyway, I took a quick look at his minor league stats, and he’s a freak. He has gotten better as he has gone up each level. Last year he started in A+, put up a 7.13 ERA, 1.33 WHIP; at AA it was 3.55 and 1.11; at AAA it was 1.41 and 0.90. He played about the same number of games at each. How can that be explained?

could be as simple as ballparks he’s played in.

or he could have gotten some decent tips in AA and never looked back.

Volquez/Hamilton

Personally, I was shocked that the Rangers traded him (I live in Dallas and attempt to follow the Rangers as closely as the Cards)...he was always considered “untouchable”. However, Hamilton has been GREAT for the Rangers fan base (and for the team) which has basically been nonexistent for the 4 years i’ve lived here…trust me, it’s embarrassing/sad to go to games and there be more people there for the opponent (esp coming from a place like st. louis). They’re filling seats which i’m pretty sure hasn’t happened in 5+ years…and i credit it to Hamilton.

i follow the Rangers too

i just read on the dallas morning new that they are still not happy about the attendance.

rangers

i guess it’s just the games i’ve been to this year, there have actually been people…AND they were cheering for the rangers. plus, usually around now i start getting emails for $2 ticket offers…which hasn’t happened yet. i guess i was just assuming they were filling seats. a lot of my guy friends here just so desperately want to cheer for the rangers…it just breaks my heart…and i make it my goal in life to make sure they don’t cheer for the astros.

i'm going to tell my cousins to go & tape it for me

then i’ll post it for all to see.

she should do it, her work gives her free tickets..

Also Izzy is back on Friday

and his ‘spot is waiting for him’ says LaRussa. Meaning, if he pitches well in a bullpen session on Friday, he’s probably the closer by Saturday and Worrell returns to Memphis.

Blech

I hope he’s mentally and physically ready. If he’s gonna be our closer, he needs to do a damn good job of it. With Pujols and Wainwright out, we can’t afford to give away games in the standings like we were earlier this season with him on the mound.

hasn't he only had one rehab appearance?

how can they proclaim him healthy & the closer after only one game?

I think he's had two

Had one tonight, I believe he went 1.2 IP with only 1 H. I could be completely making that up, though.

he's had 2 very good rehab outings...

but they were at A and AA. A wily vet should be expected to carve up free swinging minor leaguers.

He's back on the 25 man

but he’s not the closer. I’ve read it a couple of places that he has to earn that job back from Franklin.

Which is fair, if he can earn it back, give it to him. If he can’t, DL him again.

More than happy to have a healthy Izzy

it goes with the team mantra as well. You can come back on the roster when you’re ready, but you close when you earn it.

I like it.

And as long as he’s earned it (big qualification), we’re better for having him as closer and Perez being the setup. Franklin now would be able to keep Izzy from being overworked as well. win-win

From P-D

Many of the Cardinals’ horses and several of the closer’s friends help put Isringhausen back together again. Immediately upon his arrival at the Cardinals’ facility in Jupiter, Fla., Chris Carpenter and Josh Kinney spotted a flaw in Isringhausen’s delivery that may have caused him problems. Along with Matt Morris, they were there Monday when Isringhausen trotted out his refined mechanics and pitched two shutout innings in his first rehab start.

Morris! Hell yeah.

These guys need to start a blog

all of them. We have so little insight into what goes on in jupiter and it would be something that I think would catch on like wildfire if we could start getting some insight and some conversation into what goes on down there.

From our DLed players working on things to the past Cardinal personalities that we all treasure, it would be a blessing I reckon.

I guess I just take this quote
La Russa has said his spot “is waiting for him.”

As meaning as long as he doesn’t fall on his face the first time out, he’s the closer.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 12, 2008 1:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’ll look for the quotes I read tomorrow, but the gist of what I read was that Izzy is to be on the 25man when he’s ready. However, the waves in the pen have been settled and he’s not going to start them back up again. He’s going to have to show he is able to close before Franklin no longer does.

Shit changes day to day on this team, so I could be completely wrong or it’s a different message based on a AA appearance
