Latest on Pujols's Injury - Wed P.M.
F.Y.I. Everyone:
From Joe Strauss's live chat today:
All right, Debbie. You're going to be the last question for today. I have "NEW" information that El Hombre has been examined, and is suffering from a moderate strain (Gr. 2, at worst) strain of the left calf. It's a safe bet he will be down through at least the All-Star break but this is NOT season-ending. On a scale of 1-10, I'd rate this a 5. Leaving the park last night, many would have believed it an 8-10. There will be much more in the P-D tomorrow. But based on what this could have been, I believe you should consider this as more positive than negative news.

That's very disappointing news
Also, the fact that it went from and 8-10 to a 5 overnight seems that Chicken Little LaRussa might want to go back to the policy of releasing press releases on all medical matters.

Read it differently
He said it is a Grade II “at worst”. Also, he said “many would have believed it an 8-10”. Where did he say that LaRussa thought it was an 8-10. I don’t understand your abject hatred and mistrust of all things LaDunc. I really appreciate your insight on actual baseball matters but I don’t understand your thinking regarding team management.
That being said, I think this is actually encouraging news. The Cards have 30 games from now till the All-Star break. They have some difficult teams to play but if they can go 14-16 during that time I think they will be in it till the end. That would give Albert 36 days to recover or 5 full weeks + a day. That seems right in line with the estimates of recovery time from a moderate strain.

LaRussa's press conference last night
that got play on all the major media outlets had LaRussa singing a death dirge about it being ‘really bad’.
As I commented last night, they are usually really tight lipped about this sort of thing on immediate diagnosis like that but LaRussa came out and made it seem like Albert’s leg snapped in half.
There is no ‘hatred’.

Sorry for the mischaracterization
It did look bad. And with Albert’s known tolerance for pain I’m sure that made it seem worse.

as long as it’s an honest assessment, i’d rather hear it than “no comment”!
i don’t take anything to mean anything until it comes from the doctor. and even then, not so much :)

Darn it
It’s not season ending but still, Pujols out a month?!? Please, pray tell, which Chris Duncan is showing up for work?

I'd still like to see
Josh Phelps. Isn’t this why we signed him. There’s no way we were planning him to play anywhere else.
On with the (good) youth movement!

Duncan is better than phelps
both offensively and defensively, even at first (phelps is TERRIBLE defensively). I have to believe that Phelps was insurance for either both Pujols and Duncan being hurt- which based on Dunc’s YTD performance, still might be the case- or alternatively, on Duncan being traded. Phelps was ridiculously cheap and when a guy with his history is willing to sign a minor league deal, you do it; I can’t believe that Phelps wasn’t able to get a ML or even MiLB DH gig with {all the teams that should have signed bonds, but didn’t}, but since he didn’t, he’s ours for beans and there’s no reason to call him up until we are flat-out desperate.
OTOH Mather got a lot of playing time at first in the spring, and he looked VERY good there. The choice should be “Mather or Duncan”, and Phelps should only enter the conversation if Mather (RHB) is hurt and Pujols is out long-term. OTOH, Phelps is a decent hitter - .820 lifetime OPS with 1500+ PA’s - so he could and SHOULD be traded at the deadline, even if it’s for a long-range prospect. By the deadline Hill should be ready to play 1B in memphis, assuming he comes back fron the idiotic HBP yesterday, and Wallace should be installed in Springfield at either 1B or 3B of LF.

not that bad.
i mean he is going to miss 30 games. if we can just play .500 ball there we are still in amazing shape for the second with hopefully a healthy waino and carp. Could be a whole lot worse.

I can't help it
But every time I read “a healthy Waino and Carp,” I have to add “and Haren” in my mind.

Who told him that?
If he learned it, it’s from someone outside the St. Louis organization, I imagine.

If this is true
it’s really disappointing for Mulder. For a while, I’ve thought we’ll never see the Mulder we thought we traded for but it’s sad to see someone’s career end this way.

Mulder is in the Post-Dispatch saying this is flat out
false and that he feels better than he has in months. He’ll be pitching in Springfield on Saturday.

Story from the PD
Could have been worse…
Let's Go Yadi
by SHUCardinal on Jun 11, 2008 4:49 PM EDT 0 recs
Grades
A Grade 1 is an ice/compression/elevation type thing. We’ve all had them. Maybe a week or so to recover. Grade 3 requires surgery in most cases. What Albert has is something in between. He’ll hobble for a while, then merely rest. I don’t know what kind of therapy is involved (perhaps cold water whirlpool?). So with luck, this isn’t a five-week deal, but more of a two-weeks-plus, with the All-Star Break a convenient additional spell.
by Red in Chicago on Jun 11, 2008 4:49 PM EDT 0 recs
3 weeks according to Strauss's story in the PD
it’s in between a grade 1 and grade 2 strain. Pujols does tend to heal more quickly than the rest of us, so i’d say a 15 day DL stint should do the trick.

Color me pesimistic
But how long was Carpenter supposed to be out? 10 days?
Name a Cardianl injury that didn’t last much longer than the origional diagnosis. Oh well, hope this information is true. Of course knowing how Albert goes about things, the first morning he can walk and hide the limp, he’ll be back out on the field.
by Tackle Box on Jun 11, 2008 5:55 PM EDT 0 recs
Point taken
but he usually plays through everything. I was just overly concerned with the fact that he showed so much discomfort. Completely out of character, and tends to put it in perspective.

Caution
This year has been a nice surprise for all of us, but I still don’t think we should be as focused on winning this year as we are on winning next year and beyond. Pujols is a huge part of 2009, not to mention 2010, 2011….and so on. Huge. Even at the expense of this year, I’d like to see the Cardinals be extremely careful with Pujols, especially since he reinjured this thing when they put him back out there a little hobbled before.
Pujols isn’t going to like it, but I don’t care. This is about his longevity and the team’s future. Don’t. Rush. Him. Back. I don’t want to see Pujols back on the field until his calf is 95-100% healed.

In july we could get back Waino, Carp, Pujols
And we’ve got a 12 game over .500 cushion to get to that point. I say we TOTALLY focus on winning NOW!

i try to be as optimistic as possible
muscle issues in the legs tend to linger…i hear carp won’t be ready till august…and we don’t need to mess with waino’s finger
of the three, waino is most likely to pitch in july

Soriano broke his hand, HBP
Out six weeks. Ouch. Two star players in two days for the NL Central. Let’s hope nothing happens to Berkman, Griffey, or the Prince. I wanna beat these teams as much as the next guy, but I wanna do it with everyone healthy.

Hmm
I was talking to my friend (a Cubs fan) about the injuries and I said, “We basically just lost Zambrano and Soriano from our team,” in an attempt to put it in perspective.

A "clinician" comments
http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/fantasy/article/recurring-lower-leg-strains-of-albert-pujols/
I haven’t seen that any poster at VEB has linked to this, which suggests that Pujols’ calf injury is linked to his plantar fascitis, and that both might be addressed by “full-contact custom orthotics” (which sounds like a fancier version of what we used to call “arch supports”).
Does anybody know anything about Chris Neault? Should his observations respecting Pujols be taken any more seriously than his characterization of Duncan? (Silent Bob, those questions are for you.)
by stoneyb on Jun 12, 2008 9:48 AM EDT 0 recs
Chris Neault
He has a Masters in Physical Therapy from Northeastern University and is a licensed Sports Physical Therapist since 2003.
Sounds like pretty good credentials to me. Take it for what it’s worth.

Credentials
Yeah, well, credentials is as credentials does. I’ve got a doctorate from a fairly prestigious school, but I haven’t published, or even read, anything in my field since about 1982, so my opinion’s likely pretty worthless. And I’m quite sure that the professional opinions of most of the other people who got that degree in my department were pretty worthless when they got it.
