UGH...

...wow. can it get any worse? I had a bad calf strain simillar to Albert’s playing softball. It took me 4 months b/f I didn’t feel it. Hopefully Albert’s isn’t as bad…or he’s a quicker healer…or both. D.GOOCH

What physical therapy

did you get with yours? One would expect that AP’s will be state of the art—which is not always provided to us mere mortals.

Doc checked it out...

prescribed RICE. I’m not sure there’s much that PT can do for this…injuries just have to heal.

-- GOOCH

by GOOCH24 on Jun 11, 2008 12:29 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not true

If the Doc sent you to a good PT, he would work on ultrasound/stim, soft tissue and mobility work, strengthening of ankle musculature (around the calf, not directly to the calf), restoring range of motion, etc.

Pujols will be getting treatment at least twice a day, rest assured.

I can't believe i gave up a homerun to that punch and judy hitter-major league 2

by punchinjudy on Jun 10, 2008 9:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Looked like it happened on the swing

trying to reach over the plate. But it didn’t look bad which makes me think it was already worse than thought before the swing. Of course he hit a moon shot to center earlier in the game on it so who knows.

by paposse on Jun 10, 2008 9:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't think so...

...from my own experience, I’d say it happened when Albert tried to accellerate out of the box. When I tried to play with my calf strain…I reinjured it 3 times. All 3 times on trying to get out of the box and run down to 1st.

Please don't let Duncan be the temporary solution

Obviously Pujols will be out for a couple weeks at least, and no one can replace his offensive or defensive contributions at 1st base, but please don’t let Duncan be the temporary solution at 1st.

Mather at first -> Duncan called up to be 5th OF?

probably just wishful thinking on my part.

by Phizzle on Jun 10, 2008 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Consider this carefully:

Would you rather have Dunc at first and Mather in the outfield, or vice versa?

by StanTheManFan on Jun 10, 2008 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually, yes, I have.

Posted about him over on Future Redbirds last week, after watching him wander aimlessly in left field in Albuquerque. If AP goes on the DL, Dunc is my first baseman against right-handed pitching, and designated spittoon-emptier against lefties.

Looked good to me

He was due to hit in the top of the 6th, and has run out of gas rather suddenly on some of his past starts. Between that and the desire to make sure the kid got the W, I think pulling him was right, particularly with a rested pen (off day yesterday).

by enoscountry on Jun 10, 2008 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not sure that was a decisive factor.

Friday would have been like his throw day. But yeah, that adds to the reasons to pull him—there were plenty. But he did look good, after the nervous first inning.

I bet he'd play for pretty cheap.

He hasn’t gotten any other offers, according to his agent (who if anything would lie the other way) and the season is dragging on.

With interleague coming up, Duncan not making a comeback, mather with a .600 OPS, etc, I’d make the call for sure.

Anyone with MLB.TV

see Dan Uggla listed as the starting 2nd basemen for the cardinals by the reds broadcasting crew? I almost crapped my pants until I realized they just played the marlins and no one had mentioned it here. Maybe now we make a move? I think its safe to assume he will be out at least a few weeks, and if much longer do they think about going in his elbow and getting ready for 09, at least as pujols is concerned?

even if his injury is season ending, he wouldn’t be doing anything because our medical staff would be in “wait and see mode” like everyone else that gets hurt on this team.

we’re lucky to have that potential bat and MLB experience at the AAA level. He’s also way more experienced at 1b than Glaus or Mather (40 games in AA).

I'm not against

Duncan, nor am I against him being on the team. However...

His splits are almost detrimental, he needs to work on that. His bat is weak and has been all year. He needs time down there. He doesn’t need to be the positional playing “Brad Thompson” and bounced back and forth.

He gains his stroke, bring him up. But don’t dick the guy around because we need someone to play 1st base. It’s 1st, not catcher. So let’s not hamper Duncan for something someone else can play short term

if teams have lefties, they’ve been swinging them towards us. So how does Dunc help then? (doesn’t)

and potential is your key word, but isn’t a trump card. When it’s there, come knocking.

The negativity is stemming around the idea that he’ll be called up, when that “potential bat” isn’t even showing in Memphis since going there, let alone during this season.

Well guys, let's see exactly what this team is made of.

If Albert and Wainer are both out for a while, we’ll see what our boys can do. Let the kids play; that was my philosophy going into the season, and will remain throughout. It’ll be interesting at the least, and I’m confident in the guys we send out there every night to get the job done.

I would be in favor of thinking “Way outside the Box” and sign Wallance and let him have a go. It won’t happen but if I were Mo I would give it a serious consideration IF Pujols were to miss a lengthy amount of time.

it's funny

this is almost 2 years to the day that Albert got hurt in 2006. We went 8-7 over the 15 games he was gone, then went into an 8 game losing streak when he came back…

One player, even albert, doesn’t make or break a team over a 2-3 week period. Over a season, maybe, but if he’s back in under a month it’ll cost us at most 2 wins.

I know you're a WPA nut

so I’m curious if you may have an idea of the answer to this.

How many games this year has albert’s wpa completely dominated everyone else on the team? I wouldn’t say it’s many as most games have been the collective “scrappy” type.

I can’t think of another stat off hand that would show off the impact of one man, i don’t even know if it will

must have me confused with someone else

solanus, maybe? i actually don’t like WPA as a measure of a player since it is too dependent on lineup position and opportunities. It’s basically a fun, shiny trinket, like RBI’s except it looks “modern”, imho (except in many cases you can get big positive numbers without even scoring or causing a run to score!), and usually if I’m mentioning it, it’s because of something silly happening, such as player x getting +.250 for a single that puts the tying run on after another player got +.150 for a 2 run HR (i didn’t check the math there, so it may not add up, just an example), or as a tool to show how something affected the game (IE to show that Duncan’s non-catch in LA didn’t have as much impact as it seemed at the time). It’s very useful for the latter.

Anyway, to try to answer the question, in sum, Pujols has been worth +2.4 so far this year, with events totaling -3.39 and +5.79. Luddy has been +2.13, Skip has been +1.13, Glaus +.43, etc. AK is bringing up the rear with -2.53 and +1.88 = -.65 net (note that as bad as he’s been, his “negative events” isn’t nearly as bad as albert’s).

You can click on individual names if you want and try to add up how many times they were instrumental in a victory if you want, I don’t have the energy ;)

nah, lol

i think it’s just because we’ve discussed some of those wpa oddities post game before it locked in, now I know, so it’s all good. But I wasn’t lookin’ for someone to run through it, just didn’t know if there was a list of tops or not. But after really reading about it I can see how it’s a useless stat all in all.

I was just thinking of a way to say “albert hurt, season over” is not only overhyped and reactionary, but it doesn’t show up in stats either.

not saying his numbers aren’t great, but I can only think of two game changers off the top of my head, ‘stros earlier this year (aka Pissed El Hombre), the slide home from 2nd.

I do remember a few pop out and two on one out GIDP as well.

I just don’t see it, as you mentioned it as well.. so I was lookin’ for something to “prove” it. Well as good as stats could

yeah, i’m catching on to it.

I mean, Skip’s had a few (though most havent been total game changers, but last minute heroics), I can think of a few Luddy has had. It may just be being spoiled by all the things Albert does and it’ll hit me when we don’t have it.

Or it could be the fact that I’ve crossed the country literally 5 times in 8 days

well, don't get me wrong

Albert has certainly contributed MORE to this team’s success so far this season than anyone else. I didn’t mean to imply otherwise, and it is measurable in WPA or OPS or WARP or whatever. There is only one Albert Pujols and we’ll absolutely win fewer games without him than we will with him. Pointing out his negative bit was just to show a weakness in WPA, that it is highly opportunity-based; given the same high-leverage opportunities, AK would likely have had a MUCH higher negative impact than he has actually had and almost certainly would have a much higher negative AND lower positive than Albert.

But the difference between a lineup with Albert in it and one without him in it is going to be less than half a run per day. Over a season, it is huge; over a week, it can be overcome.

"the hardest decision to make is to do nothing; there is a terrible temptation to interfere." -gen patton

by SleepyCA on Jun 10, 2008 11:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, I’m not saying he’s not contributing. I’m saying that him injured doesn’t mean dire straights for this team. We’d have to play 12 games under .500 the rest of the season to even be in a situation of a .500 year.

In April that was a dream for a lot of people.

I, personally don’t think that is something that will happen even if Albert is out for the year (no, i’m not riding that horse either).

Him missing would impact the lineup a lot like how Iz being moved from closer to here and there hurt the pen. The #2 hole is now going to see pitches, we lose the ops from Albert et all.

But if he’s gone a month, I think we’ll be ok as long as we play fundamental ball and get reasonable power from the rest of the lineup.

If he’s not ok, well the light at the end of the tunnel means that him having surg isn’t a bad option. We’ll oil change our Mack truck and keep on truckin’.

Just hope if that’s the case we don’t pull a Carp and dick around for a few months instead of trying to go ahead and diagnose it properly from the onset.

That stretch

was the beginning of a weird period for the Cardinals. The Cardinals were able to absorb the loss of Pujols because of Scott Rolen going ridiculously hot all over a bunch of below average opponents (.358/1.071 OPS/9 XBH/16 RBI) to also couple that with an injured Jim Edmonds also playing ridiculous (.341/.988 OPS/6 XBH/9 RBI), even Chris Duncan chipped in.

Of course, Albert came back during that Chicago series in which Mulder’s career ended, Marquis season was destroyed, Edmonds banged his head and cost himself most of the season. We were able to get Carpenter back around the time we got Pujols back but even that didn’t help the spiral the team went into after the return of Pujols.

Hopefully we can get 3 or 4 big bats hot while Pujols is down (for however long that is) and hopefully we can avoid a big lag in our rotation (I’m looking at you Looper and Pineiro) while Wainwright is out his 4 weeks.

what upsets me...

This may have already been discussed, but on glaus’s near spectacular play (I believe that was the play at least) early in the game pujols had to stretch out on the tail end. I said out loud to my wife “uh oh, he sure is slow getting up there.” It certainly looked to me like he couldn’t get up from the spot he put himself in. It’s sure easy to say from my couch that these guys have to listen to their multi-million dollar bodies and know when to pull back (rolen, here’s looking at you kid), and of course he hit a home run shortly after that, but the difference between stopping when it’s a mild aggravation of his previous strain versus blowing the thing wide open is huge.

by ribbij on Jun 10, 2008 11:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You have to give Albert credit

If anyone out there has earned these credentials, it’s Albert.

He knows his body and tends to protect it long haul. If he doesn’t Tony has shown to be conservative and override him if there’s questions. A couple of years ago comes to mind, so does when he was battling flu issues (if I recall correctly) during his streak earlier this decade.

The guy has been protecting a gimp elbow for how long? I don’t see pride over health coming from him. Though I may have rose colored glasses

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 11, 2008 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

phelps has 1360 career MLB AB's

with an .820 OPS. So there is plenty of reason to believe, like Duncan, that he should be a successful major league hitter.

OTOH, he has not been hitting well lately and certainly does not deserve a call-up. In fact, he’s been even worse than Duncan since Duncan has been in AAA…

To the people that said it didn't look good

what about it look especially bad to you? It ‘looked’ like nothing more than a really bad cramp and I’m sure the training staff told him not to put any weight on it for fear of it being worse than a strain/sprain.

Does that mean this should be taken lightly? No, of course not. However, we’ve seen him do worse with his ankles, his back, his arm, etc bending and contorting it in weird shapes. He will miss time, I have no doubt but unless the MRI shows a clean tear, I’d imagine he won’t hit the DL.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 11, 2008 12:16 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hopefully you're right

As a former collegiate sprinter/hurdler I’ve seen and experienced more than my fair share of calf injuries. They seem to go 2 directions.

The first is nothing more than an annoyance that goes away after a couple of days – your calf muscles are incredibly resilient since they are utilized with every step you take.

The second is that since you do use your calf with every step, you’re just plain hosed for a long time. Luckily scenario 2 is relatively rare in my experience given state of the art sports medicine on a highly trained athlete.

Here’s to a relatively minor strain and a few days or even a 15 day DL trip to ensure he’s healed!

It just didn't SEEM that bad

It seemed like the kind of tightness I used to get playing basketball in my younger days. It feels like your calf muscle just forsake’d you and your toes curl up into your stomach. If you watch Albert, he reaches down right away trying to stretch them out like you would a calf cramp but thinks better of it (probably under doctors orders).

It certainly could be a tear but it didn’t look like stuff like when Nomar exploded his groin a few years ago or it even didn’t look as bad as Berkman rolling his ankle the other day.

Apparently Mo said they were going to re-evaluate

Duncan this week anyways and probably call him up for the weekend.

What would they have seen in his time at Memphis that would make them think he SHOULD be called back up? Now, it’s almost necessary and on the bright side (is there one with a Pujols injury?) he will be limited to 1B and allow Mather to stay on the roster as Mather is a vastly superior defensive OF than Duncan. Heck, I’d say that Mather is probably the 3rd best defensive OF out of the 6 we’ve had so far this year.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 11, 2008 1:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What worries me

Is that Tony will put Dunc in the 3rd or 4th spot in the order at times and Ludwick will start getting Pujols treatment by getting walked all the time so a pitcher can feast of Duncan’s complete lack of hitting skills (as it currently stands). Or Duncan will kill us when there are men on base. Duncan should always bat in front of Ludwick/Ankiel/Glaus and never behind them.

This is how I would have the batting order with Duncan.

1. Ryan
2. Duncan
3. Ludwick
4. Ankiel
5. Glaus
6. Mather
7. Molina
8. Pitcher
9. Izturis

even if his bat has been a wet noodle as of late, the boy has and continues to get on base at a good clip. I’d either put him in the #2 hole, or the 7.

I’d say 6, but Molina’s bat has looked fairly ok and Dunc may come back in pressing, 7 would help alieviate that.

yeah since we’ll be playing tony ball.

let dunc get on base, move him around.

don’t put him in a place where he’s to hit, and when he does… consider it a bonus

It's not a matter of what Dunc has done

but a matter of the options available, someone has to play first for an undetermined amount of time. Sure Mather can do this over Dunc, but he has no backup in this case. We need Dunc with the club now if for no other reason than to be the last used outfielder and the second firstbaseman.

If you are watching Sportscenter

they said that Duncan has been notified ‘to be ready’. Not that he has actually been called up.

Mo pretty much said the same thing

on the KTRS post game show tonight.
One thing that was interesting is that Mike Claibourne even brought up to Mo that Duncan has been really struggling in the minors thus far…Mo tried to ignore that comment and gave some answer that Chris was hurt and didn’t get the at bats he was supposed to. Mo was saying that he hopes Chris makes the most of this opportunity.
For Chris’ sake I hope he does make the most of it. Because If he continues to struggle…I don’t see how he has much of a future with us or in the big leagues to be honest.

LaRussa says there is no way Pujols

doesn’t avoid the DL, which is mind boggling that such a snap medical decision could be made. I mean, Ankiel dings up his shoulder and then later catches the black plague in his knee and is able to avoid being DL’d but Albert apparently hurt himself so bad tonight that he’s going on the DL ASAP.

Did something pop?

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 11, 2008 2:21 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

unless

if/when he had it looked at a few days ago when it was acting up he was notified if something happened to it, he’d need extensive time off (define extensive as you wish)

kinda like the old mechanic notion… “She’ll run o.k., but if she starts overheating again you may want to park it”

That does make sense

but how long is he being told to ‘park’ it?

They just seems to handle the news and decisions about injuries so randomly different in each situation.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 11, 2008 2:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wish it happened (well, not at all… but since we’re at this point) in July, not June as it would be in an easier schedule, around the allstar break and be a little smoother transition.

However, if it were I, 15 day dl.

He was planned to have rest anyways maybe if we sit him for a while and the calf cures up ok we can look forward to a great second half from him.

Then again parts of this resemble Carp in April of last year, and frankly if I’m in a situation where I have to choose Albert back and forth on the DL till Aug/Sept or just using the rest of this season to treat the elbow/feet I’d choose the latter in a heartbeat.

In either case, let’s hope they’re heavily proactive in making sure this isn’t going to be chronic.

What's worrying me is that this injury is not new..

this same leg was really barking at him at the end of the season last year.
It is starting to get to the point where it is chronic.

by KYCards on Jun 11, 2008 2:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed

thus the 15 day dl is appropriate, if it’s beginning to be chronic..

then let’s be proactive about sitting him

next time? consider ‘09, because he’s facing a couple of surg this offseason already

The sad thing?

If they kept him off the DL (depending on how damaged the calf actually is), then in 10 days he can sit and just DH as we go on a 9 game AL road trip.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 11, 2008 2:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You have a good point

but when he’s hitting is when he does his running and that’s when it can get worse. If he can’t run then they might as well DL him and shut him down for as long as it takes to get him in playing condition. I hate it but it’s probably what need to be done so we can have him for the stretch drive in September.

by KYCards on Jun 11, 2008 2:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He doesn't have to run after he hits the ball.

goes right along with the timing

but if his wheels are too bad for playing 1st, then him chasing doubles would be too harsh.

and when he goes into “I don’t see the world, but the next base” mode, let’s do it with rested wheels

Now we know what the Braves fans feel like

when their best hitter (Chipper) is out for periods of time with leg injuries. What’s worrying me is that Pujols is going to start following the same pattern that Chipper has the past several years. Play great baseball and then suddenly is out for 2-3 weeks….goes back to playing great ball..and is out again.

This does kinda suck

I mean, I have no concerns rotation wise, it’s like we have a whirlpool of guys going in and out we still have “who should we call up” debates, just like when Mulder was on his 30 day. Regardless of how that depth looks on paper… it’s there.

But El Hombre… damn.

Not nearly as dramatic as last season was

-player dies
-player has addiction
-player refuses to speak to manager
-player lost for season with elbow surgery
-player fights through nagging injuries until the end
-player returns from the depths of baseball hell to be national sensation
-player that returned for depths then gets busted in the papers

etc, etc.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 11, 2008 3:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

true

but the drama is heightened by the fact we are contending. guess the best way to differentiate would be to say last season was just depressing

Ankiel is Jesus!

In non-injury news (I hope)

I just finished watching the entire game (not just the Pujols part) and boy did Boggs look good after the 1st inning. He has some serious ‘Brandon Webb’ movement on his pitches. I can see what Dave Duncan means about his secondary pitches. He could probably get away with just the 4 seamer and the 2 seamer but if he could ever get that curveball to locate, he’d be deadly.

Watching Brandon Phillips dive out of the way on Boggs first curveball shows how sick it is.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 11, 2008 3:34 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

also note how Yadi seems to play instinct and stab at the ball rather than see it into the mit. That’s what really defined how great the last minute movement was to me.

going to cinci, first game. I was highly impressed.

He didn’t have many missed bat strikes, which I do hope improves. One thing to note that with the late movement even if they make contact, it doesn’t mean solid contact unless they pick up that movement.

And yeah, a curve would look dead sexy in his arsenal, especially if he harnessed it enough for an out pitch
