Game 66 Open Thread: June 10 2008

St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds, Jun 10, 2008 7:10 PM EDT

Boggs Bailey
0-0, 0.00 0-1, 2.84

the highly touted bailey hasn't been able to throw strikes since reaching triple A. in his two partial years at the level (2007-08) he has walked 4.5 men per 9 innings pitched; at the big league level he has been even worse, walking more than 6.0 men per 9 in his 10 starts for cincinnati the last couple of years.

mitch boggs becomes the 8th cardinal since 2006 to make his first major-league start. name the other 7.

For a patient offense like the 2008 Cardinals, we should be all over the base paths tonight! C’mon Boggs, show us what you can do!

2006 - 2008 rotations

top 5 in GS:
2006: Marquis, Carp, Suppan, Mulder, Reyes (Weaver and Ponson come in 6th and 7th)
2007: Wainwright, Looper, Wells, Reyes, Thompson (Pineiro/Wellemeyer tie for 6th, Maroth 8th)
2008: Lohse, Looper, Wainwright, Wellemeyer (3 way tie for 2nd one game off 1st), Pineiro

The rotation has really changed from 06, not one remaining member not even Reyes. From 07 only WW and Looper remain. That is one hell of a turnover rate.

Going to be a tough win

Guy making his 1st start on the road, a far cry from Welly. But I have faith in Boggs being a legit MLB pitcher (if not now than later) so game on!

If that was his SLG then that’s just ridiculous. I wouldn’t mind seeing something more like the .276 for at least the next three games…

I would definitely swap Ryan and Iz2

Interesting that he’s got Luddy back in the 2 hole. Maybe the young pitcher will be so afraid of Pujols that he’ll give Luddy meat to hit into the Ohio (I don’t even know if that stadium is close to the river or if home plate even faces it)

I just wanted to say

That Adam Dunn has hit a ball into the river. On the bounce, but still pretty damn impressive. Here’s what baseball-reference has to say about it.

Adam Dunn is the only player in Major League history to hit a ball into another state. In 2005, Dunn hit a home run out of Great American Ballpark in Ohio into the Ohio River. However, that part of the river is owned by Kentucky.

Actually

I think I’d rather wait to see how he performs as a MLB starter. I think it would be nice to get him a few more innings in the minors, but since 77.3% of our pitching staff is on the mend, it’s almost necessary.

That being said, it should be interesting to see.

I thought of that too, whether he was trying to make a clever pun. But even if you stretch it that far, it really makes no sense. Like I said, he should have said “Where is Anthony Reyes?” Isn’t that one of the first rules of journalism? Don’t make your writing more confusing or hard to read than it needs to be? Or maybe make it on a 5th-grade reading level? Something like that?

I’m kind of embarrassed to see Griffey in the top 3 All-Star slots. Yeah, it was a great moment when he hit 600, but he’s easily our worst outfielder (unless Corey Patterson is playing, and he can at least catch a ball every now and then). At times I worry that Griffey will be our only representative at the game, and then I calm down and remember that Edinson Volquez will be the NL starter.

Wonder what happened to Bailey

Before he pulled his hammy last year he was 92-96 touching 98….he’s been 88-92 tonight. It’s not just Cardinal pitchers who lose their fastball.

i was just wondering the same thing

he looks nothing like the guy i was scared to face for the next 6+ years

Shoot me for borrowing lingo from Will Carroll

But you have to wonder if it’s a potential “cascade” injury.

On that note

Not a big fan of how quickly he stops his arm. Doesn’t make the shoulder feel bubbly.

dont forget the double-lineout that started this inning

True

We are hitting him hard this inning. First 2 innings he had 20 pitches. Now is up to 47.

by Evilfrog on Jun 10, 2008 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions

i love that the CIN announcers

were just ragging on the cards lineup: “bailey isn’t a rookie; the cards have just one legitimate superstar hitter, with the likes of ankiel etc coming up next and first base open you just CAN’T give albert anything to hit”

and then ankiel goes BOOM. MV3, 08-style- luddy, apu, ankiel.

Ank’s .261 .341 .462 is fine but it’s not Edmonds’ .301 .418 .643

Izturis

Why Izturis is batting left against right handed picthers?
I mean why he does’nt just bat right against all pitchers
he can’t have a hit batting left

Reyes is pitching down in Memphis tonight.

Reyes is pitching down in Memphis tonight. I think this could be a tryout to see if he gets called back up. The problem with him is he can’t pitch more than 6 IP tops. He needs to go out and throw 2 R ball and 7 IP to get a call back up, imo.

by FlimtotheFlam on Jun 10, 2008 8:06 PM EDT reply actions

Good start

1 IP no hits with only 7 pitches

by FlimtotheFlam on Jun 10, 2008 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Lots of movement on the fastball

Mediocre Reyes+ curveball. Haven’t seen a changeup.

Uh, no I was a ryan backer last year, I wasn't on the site though

I’m just making conversation about the showing that ryan continues to perform better than kennedy and so do miles, and izturis. He is a complete waste of a roster spot, and I don’t understand why this team can hardly cut ties with people if there are just complete crap, they let them sit on the roster for the year, or let them take up a space at AAA when they should not even be in a uniform for this organization.
