Game 37 overflow

i'm wearing a hawaiian shirt, standing in front of a cash box, ringing up purchases at my kids' school fund-raiser. my drinks are free, but i can't drink ---- because i'm driving 3 or 4 drunk dads home. my life sucks, in other words. only a st louis victory can salvage anything of value from this evening; don't let me down fellahs. at the time i programmed this post, the cards led 1-0 and had the sacks jammed, nobody out in the top of the second, with wellemeyer batting; win expectancy 75 percent.

This team is kind of ridiculous

great in OBP, but we counteract that by NOT hitting HRs or XBH and grounding into a TON of DPs.

As I posted before this new thread

Mo needs to find us an RBI guy in a month or so if we are going to make a serious run for the division this year.

How much longer

should they give him before they need to start looking for possible trades?

by KYCards on May 9, 2008 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

they need an error mercy rule in MLB; if you give up 4 errors in one game, your team automatically loses.

Its very possible this is a real change in his skill set. If so we got a steal.

i believe it was proposed by

“cloistermaximus”. He proposed that we make a drinking game out of Franklin’s pitching prowess as early as april 5th...

Since then it has grown in popularity and now any time an alcoholic beverage is consumed, it is called a franklin, and any time an event in a ball game causes you to be nervous, it is considered worthy of consuming a franklin.

I predict that all of VEB-dome will be in a recovery program by July at this rate.

Once the bottom of the 9th started with Izzy protecting only a one-run lead I knew the game was over. The scary thing: a small part of me was actually ROOTING for him to blow it so we could cut bait on him as closer now, in May, and hopefully save ourselves months of headaches ahead…

I don’t care if Izzy feels like he’s making the right fucking pitches. Something is wrong. Yet Tony trots his ass out there to get his shit knocked around night after night. Something is wrong. How long until the team figures that out and tries something different. There’s a reason Izzy leads the team in losses. When you are the last Cardinal pitcher on the mound and you give up fucking game winning runs, you are going to accumulate losses.

This is what is bull**** about the closer role

Izzy is struggling at yet we put him in a 1 run game in the 9th because we think his job is to get saves instead of getting batters out. Your “closer” should be the “best pitcher in the BP atm”

by TheBirds on May 9, 2008 11:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree

But it was actually Franklin who drew the ace role tonight, by getting out Cameron, Braun, and Fielder in the the 8th. Izzy didn’t even have the toughest assignment on the night and he still managed to let the game slip away.

I just don’t see why the ninth inning is any different that the 8th, or the 7th. it’s the same monkeys with the same lumber trying to do the same thing. Any pitcher able to pitch in the majors should be able to save 9 games out of 10.

So?

Just because every other closer in the division sucks doesn’t mean we should go along with the trend.

One or two blown saves is one thing; that happens and that’s part of baseball. But there have been three or four games that the Cardinals have let slip away, and it has cost them the chance to put an early hammer lock on the division.

I love Izzy, but he’s either hurt or done. It saddens me to say it, but the Cardinals need to seriously look at putting him on the DL and seeing what McClellan can do.

You can’t win the division in April and May, but you can definitely lose it.

by bjork24 on May 9, 2008 11:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Izzy did NOT throw a single off-speed pitch.

Every pitch was 89-91 mph, with the exception of 1 pitch that didn’t register on the FSN radar…. Nothing but fastballs – most of which were right over the plate. No slider. Not one single curveball despite the fact that he has (had?) a great curve.

I understand back-to-basics, blah blah blah…. But if you throw cut-fastball after cut-fastball after cut-fastball you’re going to lose every time. Especially when they ain’t cutting!

by Kirkwood on May 9, 2008 11:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The breakdown.

Pitches in play:

1: Cutter hit to 3rd, out one
#2: Fastball ripped to center and saved by Ank
#3: Cutter, single
#4: Fastball, single
#5: Cutter, ripped for a single to win the game

He simply doesn’t have anything, except the curve he won’t throw, that will get a swing and miss.

If Tony says “Sometimes you just have to tip your hat” and “we got beat with our best,” I will yell at the tv.

Clearly Izzy is not “our best.” He hasn’t been “our best” all year long. This is pathetic because these are games we should win. I can handle a 9-3 loss when we our starter has a bad game but when we are in a position to win, we have to win.

If his hip was bothering him and he tried to adjust by using his arm or shouder more he may have hurt something else.

This is the same thing that ended mulder. Hip went, then he hurt his back adjusting to that, then started throwing with his shoulder more to adjust. We know how that ended.

Tony says he wants to talk to Izzy about it.

The guys on FSN say that Tony’s asked him, and Izzy says he’s all right, so he keeps getting sent out there.

Now how smart is it to listen to the guy whose job depends on Playing, rather than what the results are, or what you can see with your eyes.

How many months of Izzy going out there blowing save after save and making EVERY stupid game interesting and just generally sucking. And then finally he says “i’m hurting” and we think back to how “brave” he was to pitch while injured (and losing games left and right).

Sigh

Why can’t we clone K-Mac a few times and call them L-Mac, N-Mac, Z-Mac and have a staff full of Macs..

The 9th inning has now had more runs plate than 7 other innings. I don’t know how that rates in the mlb as a whole, but as a Cards fan that fk’n blows.

How many bullpen losses have we had this year? One too damn many if you ask me.

I’ve backed Izzy through his early struggles, but after these last 2 or 3 outings, I’m out.

If it were me I’d go aggressive on our 40man and 60 day dl all of those “medical mysteries” that we have trolling on it that clearly aren’t going to do anything between now and the all-star break. Then I’d fill it with some of the promising bullpen options (perez and flores (despite last night, has a nice k/bb ratio, era, whip). keeping in mind that worrell and jimenez are already on it.

I’m not 100% on the technicalities of shifting on and off 40man and what it does overall, but why is Hawksworth on it when his numbers… um, suck at the moment.

Then start shifting as our bullpen tires out. This has got to stop, too many damn times we’re having excellent quality starts only to lose them in the last couple of innings.

Don’t know about anyone else, but when Oct runs around if we’re sitting a couple games out of first, as a fan and a Cards loyalist, I’ll be pissed.

I wish

Tony would tear a page out of the winning formula of ‘06. We won the World Series that year precisely b/c La Russa, in the postseason, stopped making decisions based on contracts, or predetermined roles, or reputation. Instead he went with results, and that meant turning the bullpen over to the youngsters. So far this year he’s half-learned that lesson by giving so much leeway to McClellan. Time to go all the way and give Perez a shot in place of Izzy.

Brian Gunn

by briangunn on May 10, 2008 2:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

I mean, let’s place Izzy on DL, hell, make him throw simulated innings during bp to try getting something back, and while he’s doing that see if someone can take his job.

Personally I’d drop Springer easily and bring in Flores (bias, I like what I see) even though it means another lefty. I’d love to see Perez, I’d even like to see Worrell (who I think would be a nice setup man down the road).. imagine soon having a worrell – perez 8th and 9th. Yum, soak in that goodness.

Having issues is one thing, but having two outs and can’t get anything on 4 straight batters. Is BS from a closer, i’m tired of witnessing the collapse

Too many times we’ve needed to win the game earlier than the 9th and hes came in and shut the threat down, I don’t want to lose that. With the way our starters tend to fade fast, that’s a scary scenario to lose a shutdown guy.

Yeah...

That was pretty craptastic.

I alllllmost turned off the Tivo when the FSN camera cut to Izzy warming up in the pen with a 1 run lead. Why he didn’t stick with Franklin (after, what…8 pitches?) is beyond me. Well, okay…that’s not true. To Tony’s peculiarly rigid thinking, if it’s a save situation, that means Izzy.

I dare say we all knew what was coming. Did any Brewers batter even swing and miss a single one of his pitches? Hell, did they even foul one off, or were they all rifled between the lines? I can’t recall. It was just a cavalcade of hard hit balls. If only someone with a blog had written an article analyzing Izzy’s obvious decline and his inability to get batters to swing and miss…and then if only someone else from a local paper had copied it!

I love what Izzy has done for us over the years, but he’s not right. He’s no longer nails. On the same sad day that Edmonds was released by the Padres, I hope Tony makes a move with another Cardinals legacy…his closer. Izzy is not fooling anyone any more. If Tony won’t do it, I hope Mo will. This is not good baseball.

It's time for Perez to get a shot

I don’t know what else he has to prove at AAA. His numbers are sick. Call him up.
