Around SBN: Bills must alter strategy to make offense work

Parisi

So what do you guys think of Parisi.  He has now had 2 opportunities to show what he is made of in the Majors.  His first outing throwing 2 innings of scoreless ball.  Retiring his first 5 batters and then walking Holliday and Helton roping one up the middle.  He then retired Atkins to get out of the inning.  I think he showed a lot of poise here, where a lot of rookies could have let this one get out of hand real quickly.

His second appearances weren’t too bad.  He allowed 2 runs in 3 innings, where he allowed both in his 3rd inning.  Helton did miss a 3 run dinger by about 4 inches, but Parisi also allowed his 2nd run on a wild pitch where he and Molina were crossed up with men on 2nd and 3rd.

Parisi who has been a started his whole career is in the pen for who knows how long.  He has done his job so far, eating up innings and not allowing anything too crazy to go on.  I would like to see Parisi maybe in the 5th starter roll soon enough, but for now I think he is showing a lot of poise and a good future.

Parisi should definitely not be the 5th starter on this team.

The Rockies were all over him today, he was lucky to not give up more runs. If we want to use someone from AAA to start, then bring up Mitchell Boggs

Parisi

I just don’t see much of a future for Parsi in the Cardinals system. His stuff isn’t good enough to start (put him behind Reyes, Thompson, and Boggs as a starter) and we have 2 if not 3 relievers in AAA (Perez, Motte and Worrell) primed to leapfrog Parsi on the big club. D. Duncan has always been known as a guy to fix journeymen. Dunc sees something in Parisi otherwise they would have gone with one of the other inhouse options @ AAA. I’ll be very impressed if Dunc salvages something useful to the club longterm out of Parisi.

Parisi

I do agree that he did get smacked around a little bit today. But iI also think that he was able to get out of it (besides the 8th inning) every time. I think that Parisi has showed great poise when in a tough situation. In the 6th when he gave up a lead off double then got outa the inning with 0 runs. I think that many rookies would fold in those situations. In 4 times where he has had a man on 2nd base with less then 2 outs he has gotten outa in 2 outa the three times and i think that is huge to be able to stop the bleeding

Innings eater

I think the reason Dunc picked Parisi is that he has been effective in AAA and he is a serviceable guy that can eat innings and can move back and forth without it being a big disruption to his growth. What I mean is that I think they are more concerned with getting Boggs, Perez, Motte, and Worrell, more regular work and consistent work, rather than bringing them up and down, using them in situations that are dictated by the games more than by the work they want to see the guys get.

I may be off on this one, but I don’t think they are going to want to bring one of those guys up until they are confident that are ready to perform whenever they need them, without it screwing with their progress.

good point

Could explain why they went with a lower rated prospect (don’t want to mess with the development of better prospects for this spot—Parisi is holding onto the slot for the last right handed arm in the pen … meaning sporadic work).

40 man roster

in addition to those reasons, parisi was already on the 40 man roster whereas boggs and jaime garcia are not.

perez, motte and worrell are relievers. the cards were concerned about pineiro not being able to make his start due to back stiffness, so adding a reliever would not have been appropriate. they wanted someone who could eat up some innings in an emergency.

CO is a worst case for a pitcher like Parisi

If your curve is your primary pitch, Denver is not a place thats going to be nice to you.

The late DK would agree

"Your Holiness, I'm Joseph Medwick. I, too, used to be a Cardinal."-Joe Medwick, to Pope Pius XII.

So would Izzy

With his cutter not doing anything. That left his fastball.

Memory like an elephant

TLR never forgets….........when a kid does something foolish (Ryan?)............he never forgets…............to one degree or another, the kid will pay….................when a kid does something “right” (Parisi in 08 spring training).........he never forgets…....sooner or later, you can bet that kid will get the call and be given lots of opportunity…....no matter what happens going forward, the original memory always seem to hold the most weight

most CEOs I have known have a similar memory
