Game 35 Open Thread: May 7, 2008

St. Louis Cardinals @ Colorado Rockies

Wainwright Francis
3-1, 2.60 0-3, 5.26

here's a rematch of the opening day that wasn't; rained after 3 or 4 innings. it might rain again tonight, but they should be able to get it in.

ankiel's throw in the first inning was more than just a pretty exhibition of throwing prowess; it got looper out of a 1st-inning jam. the first two men had reached against looper in that inning with the cards leading only 1-0; the next hitter would have been garrett atkins, the rocks' leader in HR and RBI, with looper already up around 20 pitches for the inning. ankiel got looper out of that confrontation. by the time he took the mound again, he led 4-0.

yee gads...

aaron miles is last guy who should be hitting second.

by guayzimi on May 7, 2008 7:26 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

His

numbers resemble Kennedy, who would be in the 2 hole should he not be plus you have to look at what Miles has done against Francis .400/.455 /.600/1.055 in 11 PA.

I’m assuming Tony is playing the numbers game against Francis

Ankiel, Glaus, or

Ludwick in the two-hole would produce more runs than having Miles in there…

by guayzimi on May 7, 2008 7:42 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

On the basis of what?

Glaus hasn’t been doing much as of late. Ludwick’s swing deserves to be lower in the order. Rick, I’d give. However, having our 2B sitting in the #2 hole has produced as of late, and with the way Miles hits Francis I’d say there’s a reasonable idea to the spot.

After Rick's performance last night

I’d leave him at #6 all season. or at least, continue to do so until he changes your mind.

we may not have a killer clean up hitter, but if at least we have some depth behind El Hombre we have a chance to punish those walks.

On the basis..

that he has an exceptionally difficult time getting to second base. He has exactly two extra base hits in 72 plate appearances and he can’t run at all. Miles should be hanging with La Rue, Izturis, and Wainwright. Good god that’s 44% of our hitters.

clog the bases

so they can’t walk albert. singles in front of AP are fine. Doubles lead to UIBB

UIBB are great

when you have guys like Luddy, glaus and Ankiel batting behind albert, Albert will score a lot of runs.

And I awoke in California, far far from Spancilhill...

by SleepyCA on May 7, 2008 8:27 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

UIBB are good when out hitters are on fire

I still would rather have Albert swinging than take the base on balls

sigh

Iz has warmed up as of late and can bat against lefties, and grouping miles, or adam(?!) with larue is a little over exaggeration don’t you think?

LaRue

does represent the pitchers batting numbers a little closer doesn’t he?

Then again, I’ve loved the bat that we’ve had in the 8th spot the past two games, Adam pretty much is a best case scenario of it being successful 3 games in a row

Hmm.....

I would’ve expected Molina to get tomorrow afternoon off. Wonder why today instead?

by SoonerfanTU on May 7, 2008 7:26 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Molina

does trend to getting afternoon off after a night game.

But I think it’s setting up for a couple of players getting a day off tomorrow. We all seen how the LaRue + everyone having days off experiment went in San Fran a couple weeks ago. I’d say it’s not to keep Molina out of tonight’s lineup, but to make sure he’s in tomorrow.

Guess Thursday's lineup contest

Facing LHP Jorge De La Rosa — what will Tony do?????

Schumaker CF
Miles 2B
Barton RF
Ludwick LF
Molina C
Ryan 3B
LaRue 1B
Lohse P
Izturis SS

by ubeddie on May 7, 2008 7:39 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't think it'll be that bad.....

TLR typically keeps some guys in the lineup.

I’d say:

Schumaker RF
Barton LF
Ludwick CF
Duncan 1B
Glaus 3B
Molina C
Miles 2B
Lohse P
Ryan SS

Could see Ryan staying in at 3B for Glaus, but that would leave us awful thin in the middle of the lineup. I doubt we see LaRue in the field though.

by SoonerfanTU on May 7, 2008 7:44 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nah

Barton LF
Kennedy 2B
Ankiel CF
Ludwick RF
Duncan 1B
Molina C
Ryan 3B
Lohse P
Izturis SS

Or something like that. That’s at least my guess as to who’s playing what positions.

Looks reasonable

Glaus looks to be getting tomorrow off if any. When we had our couple of games in Miller in late April he put up .444/.545/.667/1.212. I don’t see him sitting out any of that series.

Sucks we’re in this position with Duncan though, Albert needs a day off and I doubt we see it in the four game series against the Brew, so that means seeing Duncan vs a leftie

by SoonerfanTU on May 7, 2008 8:04 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I guess that was

a rhetorical question. The odds makers start the line, then adjust it to control their liability. Somebody likes Francis and De La Rosa tomorrow. Pitchers with no wins against pitchers with lots of wins. They must think the Rockies can hit it seems. Maybe not the Cardinals. Sounds like easy money huh?

by westcoastbirdwatcher on May 7, 2008 8:15 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

well, you have to look at the odds of us going 3-0 in this series, or on a four game winning streak, or our bullpen (which may not come into play tonight, depending on which tony we see.. keep him in because he’s our ace, or pull him to protecting him) keeping runs off the board, francis going 0-4, etc.

I’d say the smart money would be the rockies, but as a fan it seems like it’s a solid bet.

Bettingwise, tonight's game is independent of last night's, etc.

The odds are about the same for each game, and they are about 1:1, slightly better in good years or against bad teams.

by Red in Chicago on May 7, 2008 8:22 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You’ll find a lot of chase systems coming into play tonight is what I’m implying, and I don’t find any game to be completely independent of previous nights/campaigns. They all play a factor, just depends if those factors can entice the public. Which is the overall goal.

And the FOX gun confirms.. his fastball is around 90…Uhh.. Has this been happening lately? I haven’t noticed.

Wainer is usually in the 89-92 slot starting

Unless you count that game last week when he was dialing it up to 94-95. I thought maybe HE thought he was closing again.
