Why do athletes have to leave the game so gracelessly? He should’ve retired after the WS win in 06 and rode off into the sunset. It’s just sad and pathetic. Of course, he made quite a bit of coin off that act.
retire after 07
I think he was going to retire after last year but the Cards declined their 07 option and resigned him to a 2 year deal.. kind of left him no other choice
As seen on Bleed Cubbie Blue message board... "Wait until the Cardinals call up Rasmus..."

Changing my vote
to Ankiel. Just saw both his throws. UNBELIEVABLE. Damn I hope we keep him next year.
Phew!
I thought that this was it for some reason. Is he arbitration eligible? Is that what I’m thinking of?
Yes this year and next
he signed before the hearing this year. Who knows what will happen with his limited history for comparisons.
Gotta be Rick
It would be a completely different game without those catches and the HR

...to bring up pitch counts. I know it’s only 114 and Looper’s pitched one hell of a game, but was it really necessary to let him try and pitch a complete game? Don’t get me wrong I’m not bad mouthing Looper or even TLR, just thinking outloud.
I like how you said ONLY 114
That’s quite alot. Like (I think it was) Sleepy said earlier, his arm crapped out late last year, maybe it’s not so wise to push him so hard early this season. But it sure would have been nice for him to get that CG

looper's game is our season so far right there
Nobody is phoning in their performance. Everybody is either relatively new or overcoming adversity (glaus-injury, kennedy-ineffectiveness). Everybody is challenging themselves and finding out what they can really do—schumaker, ank, ludwick, kennedy, even izturis.
Just great stories everywhere.
ERA is such a terrible metric, especially for relief pitchers
His 1.163 WHIP so far this year, though is pretty decent.

Looper was the least of our problems
now Franklin? That is another matter.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down and that foot is me
Looper did great all night long, but when the 9th came up he was over 100 pitches, so why in the world leave keep him in there after all that flak over leaving Wainright in there. I don’t think he should have been in there to let two people get on. And, I did think he should have put Franklin in, so clearly that didn’t work as well as I thought ti would have

Sucks that he adds that much to his ERA just because A) he was sent out for the 9th with over 100 pitches already and B) Franklin couldn’t keep the ball down

so the stats only hurt his earnings potential going forward. Cynical way to look at it. Agree that someone else should have started the ninth.

shouldn't there be a separate statistical category of "save" to be distinguished from a save?
If you make the game a save situation and you simply fail to screw up sufficiently badly, that’s very different from coming into a 5-4 game and knocking out three guys in a row.
When he came in it was a save situation by the book
Although he had a 4-run lead
