Game 32 Open Thread: May 4, 2008

Chicago Cubs @ St. Louis Cardinals

Marquis Wellemeyer
1-1, 4.45 2-1, 4.14

don't know what to make of the mike parisi callup; apparently he's scheduled to make a start, which suggests that somebody's hurt. guess we'll know more when we know more. . . . ok, should have checked the parisi fan post first. therein (scroll to the bottom) is a link to R.B. Fallstrom's article about the roster move, in which we learn that pineiro has a bad back and might not be able to go. so parisi's insurance in that case ---- and otherwise is a source of innings for a bullpen that is suddenly looking awfully thin.

that's the Cardinals' best offensive lineup

except for maybe Ryan instead of Izturis….but those seven ought to score some runs….can’t wait to watch Pujols vs. Marquis with Ankiel-Glaus-Duncan behind him.

by nota bene on May 4, 2008 7:48 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

There's no maybe about it

Ryan is a better offensive player than Izturis

I'm also an advocate of Brendan Ryan

being the everyday shortstop. But Izturis has been very good with the glove, and Tony seems to place more emphasis on defense at times than your average manager. I personally think that Ryan’s bat makes up for any slight defensive downgrade, but I don’t fill out the lineup card.

by LukeMP1186 on May 4, 2008 7:58 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I know...

I wasn’t disagreeing with you. I was just trying to come up with a reason as to why Tony is such a big Izturis fan.

by LukeMP1186 on May 4, 2008 8:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Although it's no contest

in experience vs Marquis. Izturis is hitting .412 in 17 AB, while Ryan has nothing to show for his 2.

by mikeonthecards on May 4, 2008 7:58 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

yeah

sorry, comment was garbled….I was referring to the first 7….we’ve seen that alignment only once and IIRC we scored a buncha runs….can’t remember who the 9 hitter was. Kennedy seems to be the team’s natural 2 hitter even though he has no power at all….Pujols needs to be hitting with OBP in front of him and SLG after him…..

by nota bene on May 4, 2008 7:59 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I like the ones

With Skippy leading off followed by Barton. But it has been away snice Duncan has got a start.

LilDunc

Breaks out tonight!!!!!!!!

The only one who liked the Cardinals so much he became a St. Louis Cardinals football fan.

And I think we're stacking this lineup

with guys who have been Marquis’ teammates—get under that damn sinker, and pound it over the wall

I was at the game on friday with a sign that said…”IT”S NEVER GONNA HAPPEN” The cubs fans weren’t to happy about it in the bleachers but It was awesome!

2/3rd's of the earth is covered by water, the other third is coverd by Jim Edmonds....when he's healthy...

I just hope Marquis

hopefully

when Parisi goes back down (cause i see no reason to keep him hear if/when Pinero is healthy) we’ll bring up Perez or Motte. Need to start getting them experience and they are throwing great in Memphis.

by gossard56 on May 4, 2008 7:55 PM EDT   0 recs

Don't remember which one.....

Or maybe its both of them, but they are still walking WAY too many.

by Evilfrog on May 4, 2008 7:57 PM EDT   0 recs

I really hope

this broadcast isn’t another Soriano/Fukudome lovefest like FOX yesterday, but I’m not very optimistic.

10 run Sunday's!

Lets do it boys!

I haven’t seen a game on tv since last summer. 10 run Sunday please.

Good vs. Marquis

Troy Glaus: 4 for 6 with a BB
Duncan: 3 for 8 with an HR and 2 BB
Albert: 4 for 14

And Welly is awesome through 5!

by enoscountry on May 4, 2008 8:10 PM EDT   0 recs

Glad to see that ball on the outside corner

called a strike. Welley’s gonna need that pitch tonight to be effective.

That was ugly, Iz2…you’re better than that

He is

He has made some solid defensive plays for us this season. His offense blows, but his defense is good.

remind me of Shredder from TMNT.

6 called strikes so far

out of 18 pitches thrown. Generous strike zone or is Welly just hitting his spots?

by nota bene on May 4, 2008 8:17 PM EDT   0 recs

oops

I wouldn’t say it’s an unfairly generous strike zone, but average-to-mildy-generous through the first half inning.

by effin fisk on May 4, 2008 8:19 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Nice inning, Colonel.

He’s hitting his spots so far, while being careful with a dangerous lineup. We’d be out of this inning if not for the botched play. I’m liking this game early on.

yep

so did gameday, that was a total BP ball…i bitched all last year he pulled that shit. He justifies it by saying (paraphrase) “why swing at the first strike? I can hit just as good with 2, I may never swing at the first strike”
