Game 32 Open Thread: May 4, 2008

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals, May 4, 2008 8:05 PM EDT

Marquis Wellemeyer
1-1, 4.45 2-1, 4.14

don't know what to make of the mike parisi callup; apparently he's scheduled to make a start, which suggests that somebody's hurt. guess we'll know more when we know more. . . . ok, should have checked the parisi fan post first. therein (scroll to the bottom) is a link to R.B. Fallstrom's article about the roster move, in which we learn that pineiro has a bad back and might not be able to go. so parisi's insurance in that case ---- and otherwise is a source of innings for a bullpen that is suddenly looking awfully thin.

that's the Cardinals' best offensive lineup

except for maybe Ryan instead of Izturis….but those seven ought to score some runs….can’t wait to watch Pujols vs. Marquis with Ankiel-Glaus-Duncan behind him.

There's no maybe about it

Ryan is a better offensive player than Izturis

I'm also an advocate of Brendan Ryan

being the everyday shortstop. But Izturis has been very good with the glove, and Tony seems to place more emphasis on defense at times than your average manager. I personally think that Ryan’s bat makes up for any slight defensive downgrade, but I don’t fill out the lineup card.

by LukeMP1186 on May 4, 2008 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I know...

I wasn’t disagreeing with you. I was just trying to come up with a reason as to why Tony is such a big Izturis fan.

by LukeMP1186 on May 4, 2008 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Although it's no contest

in experience vs Marquis. Izturis is hitting .412 in 17 AB, while Ryan has nothing to show for his 2.

by mikeonthecards on May 4, 2008 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

sorry, comment was garbled….I was referring to the first 7….we’ve seen that alignment only once and IIRC we scored a buncha runs….can’t remember who the 9 hitter was. Kennedy seems to be the team’s natural 2 hitter even though he has no power at all….Pujols needs to be hitting with OBP in front of him and SLG after him…..

just got home from work...

Why did we send Anthony Reyes down? huh?

by eephuspieces on May 4, 2008 9:16 PM EDT reply actions

Parisi called up

Pineiro may be having back issues, so Parisi is possibly starting at Colorado tomorrow

if that's the case

why does reyes go down and not joel on the dl

by eephuspieces on May 4, 2008 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Well,

You dont put a SP on the DL if you think he is only going to miss one start.

by Evilfrog on May 4, 2008 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Is there

a set amount of time a rey has to stay down?

by eephuspieces on May 4, 2008 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope.

Pretty sure they can call him back up Tuesday if they have to. Who knows. He also might be down there because a trade partner wants to see him start a game or two.

Okay...

We get it. Joe Morgan sucks. Continually bashing him is more annoying than his commentary.

Normally I would agree with you

But it’s like everything he says gets dumber and dumber ad infinitum

Off topic

We always hear about how good Jon Miller, Vin Scully and others are at play-by-play, but who do you guys think is the best color man in baseball?

am I allowed to say Mike Shannon?

purely because I love how ridiculous he is?

by RedbirdAvenger on May 4, 2008 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed

but if i wasn’t a cardinals fan, i’d say vin sculley. He does the Dodgers broadcasts on TV and radio by himself. No color man. He’s still got it. One of the best parts of living in LA

Watching FSN today

I actually liked the Royals broadcast team on FSN today. Ryan Lefebvre and Paul Splittorff both did a pretty good job.

Nice play by Welley

Kept Fontenot from taking third.

Who was it that said that a pitcher should “never field his position”? Rather, let the D behind him take care of it.

Why

would anyone ever throw a fastball to Soriano? Wow. Same pitch X 3.
