A quick poll
Alot of the questions that are posed on this board are very good but almost unanswerable until the fans know what direction the cards are goint to take. If they're this close at the break are they going to go all in to win it or are they going to continue to rebuild? At the begining of this season everyone had the Cards dead last noone expect this kind of record or the play on the field.
This question came up when discussing the Cards with a buddy of mine the main topic was "Lohse to keep him or trade him?" Needless to say arguements could be made for both: He's pitching well but only averging 5 2/3 innings per game. His ERA is right at 4 and a 1.3 WHIP. He would bring a second baseman or a top prospect from a team in need of pitching trying to make a run. But you also give up a starter and thiers no gaurentee

He is going to want to much money for us to sign him.
So the question is, do we think we can get more out of him by trading him or from the extra draft pick we get next year.

With the rehab pitchers
we have not coming back as planned, I think that if we are going to contend, we have to have Lohse all year long. I don’t think now is the right time to be going to a large youth movement with the rotation (next year should be good, Parisi and Garcia/Pineiro, Wellemeyer, Wainwright, and Carp). Use Lohse as long as we have him and be happy with the extra draft pick.
Don’t trade Duncan while the stock is low either…

i disagree
i think we have enough pitching (mainly starters) to afford to trade lohse by the deadline (the sooner the better). right now his stock is very high because of his wonderful start and he is pitching out of his mind. we should trade him to a contending team in need of pitching at the deadline (note: i am not saying we won’ be contending by july, i’m saying that at some point, we should have a surplus is starting pitching).
lohse could fetch a decent prospect in return and he’s only got this year on his (very cheap) contract anyway. i say we trade ‘em away. it’s all part of the rebuilding process in which i still believe we’re in.
the big wild card is carpenter. if he can come back and be just a shadow of his former self, we’re in business. conventional thinking says that todd wellemeyer would be the one to go, but he’s pitched so well (and suprisingly deep into games) this year. he’s outpitched pineiro and even looper to this point this year.

im sticking with my guns
trade him.
next year (if we are lucky) we are looking at
Carp
Waino
Welly
Piniero
and one of the kids.
trade him and get what we can.
I like him and he has been solid, but i just cant ever believe he will keep it up

That looks about right to me.
Carpenter won’t be his old self this year, but they will have to make room for him. That will probably involve trading somebody, and Lohse will provide the most return.
Your rotation looks about right for next year. I think that Carp, Wainwright, and Wellemeyer are the core of your rotation. It seems like Pineiro will be fine if he can straighten out the injury bug that hit him this year. Then, you can pick from McClellan, Boggs, Garcia, Parisi, et al to try to fill the last spot.
I guess I still keep expecting this team to regress back to its current talent level at some point this season, so I still don’t really take our “contending” status all that seriously. Maybe I’m being too pessimistic, but I think a lot of things have to go right to stay in the race all the way. I’d hate to see us sacrifice any of the youth movement that seems to be working so well for a pipe dream of contention.

compensatory picks?
One thing I don’t know about that maybe someone else can shed light on: With the 1-year deal, would we have the right to compensatory picks if we offered him arbitration and he signed elsewhere? I know this obviously entails a risk, but it’s certainly something worth thinking about. However, I don’t know the rules on such thing. Is there a minimum time you have to be under a particular contract for in order for this to apply? At his current pace, would he constitute an “A” or “B” level player that would bring a worthwhile compensatory pick?
Maybe someone else who better understands that system can explain. I think it would majorly affect what I personally would hope for the Cards to do depending on what the situation was with this.
