i hope this puts the fork in jimenez

although it is nice that we have someone to throw out there as a sacrificial lamb. maybe jimenez can throw for someone in the HR derby.

Rick Ankiel could throw out Chuck Norris. Easy.

This better be the last we see Jiminez in a Cardinals uniform

this guy is seriously bad. How many HRs has this guy given up as a Cardinal the past two seasons??? it has to be in double digits now.

Wow I thought it was more than that

it seemed like there were several games last year either him or Cavansos “Crazy eyes” were giving up the long balls at a pretty good pace.

Hell, with this effort we might as well have pitched Blake Hawksworth

Just got home to see Jiminez and Parisi performed as expected.

Ugh.

Parisi was not a good starter against AAA level hitters. Servicable but not good. So once he faces MLB hitters in a similar starting effort the results are what you would expect from a AAAA pitchers.

Jiminez, also performing exactly like he did last year.

Why do Dave and Tony prefer AAAA talent that at best are margional MLB talent over more unique pitchers with the potential to be a good MLB pitcher but who are somewhat unique.

Why is Worell still in the minors? Or put another way, what do they see in Jimenez that they dont in worrell?

At some point results need to matter more than getting on top of pitches and throwing sinkers low in the zone results be dammed

by DriverZn on May 31, 2008 9:08 PM EDT reply actions

Jimenez is like the anti-Reyes...

They have both pitched fairly poorly in the majors, but they seem to like Jimenez more. Even when Reyes is successful, at most he gets a backhanded compliment.

Maybe it’s because of his first name?

It’s old school-the way all ball players used to wear it. The whole Springfield team wears them; and I think the Cards lower minors do too. I love the look…....

by madding on May 31, 2008 10:20 PM EDT reply actions

Hawksworth?

He’s the scheduled starter for Memphis tomorrow, and he’s on the 40 man roster.

Reyes pitched yesterday, so I doubt it would be him. Mark Worrell and Jason Motte are the other possibilities.

by adiueordie on May 31, 2008 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions

unfortunately Hawksworth’s ERA is 6.22 in AAA… yikes…Jason Mottes’ 3.60 looks a little better, but he wouldn’t help in long relief.

Mark Worrell's 1.88 ERA takes the cake. But he's pitched just 24 innings in 21 games.

Should be interesting to see who they pick, if any of them.

by adiueordie on May 31, 2008 10:36 PM EDT up reply actions

don’t know how that gray box got there. Was saying 24 innings in 21 games…

by adiueordie on May 31, 2008 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Hawksworth is scheduled to miss his next turn-he has a problem with one of his knees.

Castellanos is taking it. Why would they need to call someone up? For what spot….I’m confused.

I don’t want them calling Reyes unless it’s to give him the flight # to get to his new employer. No more Memphis shuttle for him. Just leave him alone until you are ready to move him somewhere for good.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

by jillsinmo on May 31, 2008 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Doesn't Hawksworth have to be removed from the 40 at this point?

He clearly seems to be on his way down the long slope to nothingness. He is being passed by one after another rising prospect.

by etp_stl on May 31, 2008 11:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Doesn't it have to be Boggs?

He has been pretty good, so far from the numbers. He is keeping a 2:1 K/BB ratio, and he is averaging 6 innings. He seems to be a ground ball pitcher.

Garcia looks like he has been pretty good, too. He hasn’t thrown much at AAA, but his numbers look pretty good there, too.

by etp_stl on May 31, 2008 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

They could just let Parisi have another start and see if maybe it was just a bad game he

needed to get out of the way. I guess it depends if it’s one start or longer term….Boggs has pitched well; it might be time to let him take a turn….

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

by jillsinmo on May 31, 2008 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I would have given him the chance, first.

There was no reason to call up Jimenez. He has never been good at the ML level. It seems like another case of Duncan trying to force his genius on us.

I know he wasn’t on the 40, but Boggs seems like he should have been the move (we both feel the same on the Reyes situation, and Thompson is still broke). Besides, a guy like Hawksworth should be moved off the 40 anyway. That would make room for him.

I’m ok with Parisi getting another shot, since I don’t think it was a matter of stuff tonight. I think he was just a little too excited for his first start, and he couldn’t get the ball down. They call him a two-pitch pitcher, but he has 3 curveballs. I think he has stuff, even if he ends up being a career reliever.

by etp_stl on May 31, 2008 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions

can Barden pitch?

I have a love/hate relationship with the Cardinals' middle relief corps.

by madding on May 31, 2008 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Well this is what I predicted........

Jimenez would be pitching in a blowout game! Well thanks to him it became worse very quick but he was not used in a high leverage situation I guess….

Move one Jimenez will be sent down once Joel makes his next start in 5 days and Jimenez may be sent down sooner.

by ICbirdfan on May 31, 2008 10:24 PM EDT reply actions

Joel couldn't throw his session today

so who knows if he will be able to take his next turn. I’m starting to lean towards hoping they’ll call up one of the young starters, keep Parisi in the pen and send down Jimenez. maybe they can auction him off on eBay or something…

I have a love/hate relationship with the Cardinals' middle relief corps.

by madding on May 31, 2008 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, golly gee.....

I was not real happy when they signed Joel for the money last fall. Folks around here were mostly sure it was a great signing, so I didn’t say much because it didn’t bother me THAT much. I hate to bring this up, but has anyone noticed he’s been hurt most of the year? Has anyone notice he hasn’t pitched all that well when he wasn’t hurt? I think if we can get a run of acceptable pitching from him, that he should be the first to go. His contract is what, 8million for next year? It doesn’t seem like much, except it really seems like way too much…...

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

by jillsinmo on May 31, 2008 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

He hasn't been bad

If you exclude his first start (when he was just recovering from shoulder stiffness), he has a 3.57 ERA in 7 starts.

He injured himself shagging flyballs in San Diego. His last start out, he was tagged with a loss because he hung a curveball (not really, it was still down in the zone) and the Cardinals couldn’t muster more then 2 runs in the game.

He’s been better than Looper, and one could argue that since coming off the DL, he’s been better than Lohse.

by Hardcore Legend on May 31, 2008 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions

and even that first start in SF should not have gone the way it did. If Rico Washington catches a ground ball, Piniero gets out of the 4th with the score 3-2 giants instead of 6-2. At the very least that should have been scored an error; I suspect it was scored a hit because the home town scorer wanted to give the struggling rookie an extra base hit.

Who knows what would have happened in the 5th, but he wasn’t pitching as bad as his line indicates.

I was okay with the Pineiro signing

not thrilled, but I thought it made sense. I guess I just keep getting flashbacks of his one decent year with the Mariners, having had their broadcasts crammed down my throat here in Portland for years.

I have a love/hate relationship with the Cardinals' middle relief corps.

by madding on May 31, 2008 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

With a rotation of ...

Wainwright, Lohse, and Wellemeyer already (granted I didn’t see Wellemeyer providing this much this year), Pineiro has been pretty good as a 4th starter. Yes, he has been hurt a lot, but Lohse is the only one we signed that hasn’t been broken.

8 million is probably a little much for next year, but I’ve given up on trying to figure out pitching contracts. I just look forward to raising kids to be LHPs.

Two Observations

Let me start by saying that this probably wouldn’t have had an impact on the outcome of the game, but WHY would a manager start a BACKUP catcher for a pitcher that is making his first major league start. Not to mention, that you have one of the best starting catchers which is known for his defensive prowess & handling of a pitching staff. Its like he was saying to Parisi, “allright NOW show me what you’re made of, rook!” You would think that a mgr would try to give a kid every advantage possible in that situation.
Also, if Dave Duncan (or anyone else on the planet) couldn’t see that Jimenez DID NOT have the right stuff for the major league level during last years stint with the club, regardless of a 1+ ERA @ AAA, then I need to look into a new profession.
How long can the Cardinal Brass allow these types of utterly moronic moves by the guys in the dugout, because IMHO, several moves that are made by Tony & Dunc do not make much sense. Sometimes it seems that they try to make moves that deliberately undermine the team to somehow prove a point to mgmt. Just my own observations.

by buzzburton33 on May 31, 2008 10:36 PM EDT reply actions

good point

about the catching situation today. besides, LaRue is too terrible to use as often as he’s been used. I understand keeping Yadi fresh, but there are probably at least 20 AAA catchers who could hit better than him and play capable defense.

I won’t pile on Jimenez anymore… I’ve already said my piece (at least for today.)

I have a love/hate relationship with the Cardinals' middle relief corps.

Not only that

but he got Jason LaRue hit by a pitch by throwing a tantrum over a pitching change in an 11 run game.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 1, 2008 1:05 AM EDT up reply actions

It reminds of the Pineiro return.

They brought Pineiro off of the DL, and they stuck him with one of Tony’s “how many scrubs can I fit into a lineup” types of lineups. Then, Rico blows a sure out, and Tony blames Pineiro for saying he was ready too soon. That kind of stuff irritates the crap out of me. He gets commended for putting his players into a position to succeed, but does that sound like what he did to Parisi and Pineiro?
