Duncan to Memphis, Mather Called Up

Bernie Miklasz reports on his forum that Chris Duncan has been optioned to AAA-Memphis and Joe Mather has been recalled to replace him.

According to Bernie,

"Will be made official this afternoon...

The way it is was explained to me (no names, but the person who told me is, as we say, golden): they think Chris can be a huge asset if he gets his swing right, and gets his power back... and they really believe the best way for that to happen is for him to get out of here for a while (he's pressing) and get a chance to take 4-5 at-bats, every day."

Mather has been hitting .315/.406/.671 for the Redbirds, with 12 home runs and 24 RBI.  He's especially been crushing left handed pitching, posting a 1.217 OPS against southpaws thus far in 48 AB.

Edit:  Forgot the Miklasz link

And Edit #2:  Here's what Joe Strauss has to say:

"The Cardinals on Friday officially reversed field by optioning left fielder Chris Duncan to Triple-A Memphis and promoting prospect Joe Mather to take his place.

The move follows Duncan’s prolonged struggle to regain the power stroke apparently sapped by last season’s sports hernia that required September surgery and a prolonged recovery."

Edit 3 is it's not breaking anymore, since the kid is playing today.

If you're gonna do this...

Might as well do it now with umpteen lefties coming up on the schedule. Welcome to the Show, Joey Bombs!

do it right....

Ive been singing the Mather song along with several steadfast supporters for a long while, so now its put up or shut up time. 4-5 of my last posts were Mather oriented based on watching him play or agreeing that he deserved to be called up. I think this kid has grown up, fllled out that 6’4” frame and can play some ball.

IMHO, stats that suggest he’s only good for 1.875 wins or whatever over the course of the season are inadequate as a reason to keep any player down that was producing the way Mather was at the AAA level. If you produce on that level you should get a shot if theres a spot for you. He took the spot of a struggling platoon player and gives the team a + or at least a par on every skill.

That said, its not gonna do the team any good if there are few or no ABs and he goes into a Barton slide from lack of playing time. Dont wanna see Joey “bomb” that way.

Would like to see Schumacher traded to a team thats needs a solid #4 OF. That and a deal worked with the Indians so Barton can get some playing time in Memphis would ease the OF log jam.

Kennedy going with Schumacher, Duncan, Reyes and Franklin (Perez and/or Motte can have the eighth and 9th inning!!) to new digs where they can prosper and be forever happy would be the next nice present from Mo.

Miles can tag along to so Barden gets a shot! Between Barden and Mather you can backup all four IF positions and give Ryan more time at SS and 2nd…..now theres a six player package for a prospect that no team could pass up :O! Or is that ; D!

I am a fan of Motte and all

but really? 8th inning work before he has even tasted the big leagues? I won’t argue about Perez.

Guess that pretty much sums up the long term faith I have in Franklin

Mottes walks are up recently and he’s given 7 runs in the last 8 innings, so he can stay where he’s at until he gets his previously good control back. He has KOed 18 in the last 8 innings. In that case Springer and McCellan can share it.

The last 2 pargarphs were obviously wishful thinking and will never happen, I’ll invoke the “I can dream” clause : O…

dreaming is good

I am gonna dream that Franklin is going to have 1-2-3 ninth one of these days

Tonight

Will he be starting tonight? My guess is yes with a lefty on the mound and a home game. Maybe second in front of AP.

Wow

If Mather produces, we’re REALLY going to have an outfield surplus.

On with the (good) youth movement!

Very true

Without a doubt we are going to have to trde some of this OF surplus over the next few months. Exciting times for the Cards for sure.

Mozeliak...

I love this guy. Looks like its another move encouraged by him….I just don’t see this happening without his influence. It really didn’t seem that Tony was too interested in this move just a few days ago…...I wonder how much long Tony will be able to take Mo meddling in his business

This is not to say...

that Tony and Dunc have lost all say in personnel matters, of course. The Kelvin Jimenez promotion clearly illustrates they still have a large amount of say on who does and doesn’t get called up. I can’t see Mo saying “Oh boy! Finally a chance to get another look at Kelvin!!”. I’m sure Mo would rather have called up Worrell or Motte…...

We all criticize LaRussa when he dumps on a guy in the press, and rightly so.

Isn’t it possible that he is ok with this move, but that he was just voicing confidence for the players he had while they were here? I know it seems odd at first, but since Chris is obviously a favorite, he would never criticize him in the press. Especially since his daddy works for him.

Holy shit

It feels so nice to actually see the organization do the right things like they have done this year. Agressive use of the minor leagues is so refreshing!

I agree, Mo is pushing this franchise along now. We are operating like a forward thinking team, and not a rely on veterans old TLR type team.

Lets hope Mather produces!!

by gossard56 on May 30, 2008 2:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

There finally is talent to use

In years past our AAA roster has been loaded with fringe prospects and career minor leaguers. I don’t lay it on LaRussa as much as poor drafting and farm management from well into the 90’s until 2004. There just wasn’t much to lean on.

I think the positives really started showing in the 2005 draft and has continued since. There are real options available now. The guys on the big club have some real threats to their playing time developing in the system.

I too like the aggressive promotions through the whole organization. I just happen to think that Luhnow and company have set the stage for this to happen, where it could not before. I do understand Mather was drafted in 2001, but I still think overall the point still has merit.

On a side note, I am really happy for Mather because it’s been a pretty long road for him. He’s a good example of how sticking by kids with tools can pay off sometimes. If you draft a raw high schooler, they may look awful for several years, but they have the time for the light to turn on…..If the organization is patient enough. Mather could be a good example for guys like Daryl Jones, Tommy Pham, Jon Edwards….Could also be a good example for the organization to keep in mind when kids struggle early on.

by Merry CRasmus on May 30, 2008 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not to be snarky

But Duncan is hardly a veteran. A TLR guy to be sure, but he’s no grizzled vet. He’s still a young guy that needs to get right in the head, and the crowd here has been particularly harsh on him, which has affected his hitting.

I wholeheartedly agree with the rest of your post, though. Great to see the organization be proactive and forward thinking, and Mozeliak is great at rewarding players performing well in Memphis.

His next two problems will be how to handle Barton, and if Rasmus doesn’t srart hitting, will he keep him there or send him down to Springfield?

by MilCardFan on May 30, 2008 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

not so sure that Barton situation is the next problem....

From the sounds of yesterday’s story on stltoday.com it would appear that something could happen soon with Adam Kennedy. Adam was bitching and moaning about playing time and Tony wouldn’t comment on him other than to say “Stay tuned…”. I hope this means something will be happening soon. Barden deserves a call up just as much as Mather did. Even if Barden doesn’t produce much it wouldn’t be difficult to find someone to replace AK on the roster.

It seems like if I were producing as little as Kennedy, ...

I would want to keep my head down on the bitching and moaning front. The fact is that Miles is clearly outperforming him right now (and I can’t stand Aaron Miles!). Bring up Barden to take his place, and see if he can continue to hit at the ML level.

by etp_stl on May 30, 2008 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

...before I sleep

miles to go. ”...can’t stand…” ???

I was going to chime in from the anti-Kennedy wagon (I’ve had a seat on that bus for over 12 months now) but instead my thoughts shift to Miles. I’m constantly miffed because of the impression I get that so many VEB’ers dislike Aaron Miles.
I read the ‘arguments’ against him and I ‘understand’ the anti-Miles position taken, but I don’t “get” it.
He’s a plugger, he gives everything he has; he’s versatile {three infield positions, switch-hitter} even if with mediocrity; he’s not making a bundle of cash, and I have yet to hear anything negative about his attitude.
It’s not Aaron Miles’ fault that… Kennedy bites and yet can only play 2b, that Itz is not really a bona fide everyday SS, that Glaus has foot or eye problems, or that Tony doesn’t have enough faith in B. Ryan to use HIM everyday. So, it’s not Aaron’s fault that he is over-used compared to the talent he brings.

by the Tewk on May 31, 2008 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's a AAAA player.

He’s barely good enough to be a competent backup, and only at 2B IMO. I’ve drank the Aaron Miles kool-aid in past years, but the fact is he has no staying power. He wilts in the heat, and by late July he will be hitting .240 if he plays every day. He provides no pop from his bat, and he is not spectacular enough defensively to justify his position.

I agree his situation gets amplified because the rest of the MIF on this team is sub-par. I don’t buy into the 3-position backup nonsense. He hurts the team when you put him at SS or 3B. Izturis IS an everyday SS as long as he’s not relied upon to be a significant offensive force. This has always been a sacrifice that teams have been willing to make at SS and C as long as the defense is stellar. Izturis and Molina clearly fit the bill here, and Molina is starting to produce offensively, also.

Kennedy gave a glimmer of hope for a while, but now he can’t even beat Miles out at 2B. Ryan needs more time in the lineup to see if he can provide any offensive help. He is clearly a better player than Miles, and if we had a real 2B then Miles should be gone. I’m not convinced that Ryan will provide enough offensive power to put him at 2B every day on this team, since there are so many light-hitting options.

And the really sad thing is, that currently Miles has been the best performer at 2B. I don’t see that as a boon for him as much as an horrific statement on the other options.

You are right. It’s not that I can’t stand Aaron Miles, it’s just that I can’t stand that he has a place on this team. He seems like a decent enough guy, and he gives everything he has. Unfortunately, everything he has should give him a long and illustrious career bouncing from team to team filling in when something bad happens to a real player.

it’s not like he’s taking anyone’s spot, and the only way he’ll get better is by staying there.

Though it is kind of funny that Duncan had a big hit last night and now they are sending him down. But I am all for this move I really wanna see what Mather can do in the big leagues! cant wait for the game tonight!

Overdue

Shouldn’t Duncan have started the year in Memphis after his Spring Training injury and poor start there? Couldn’t they have DL-ed him and had it be a rehab stint? At any rate, it’ll do Lil’ Dunc good to get regular swings to correct himself and the organization good to get a look at Mather on the biggest stage.

As an aside, I’m going to Memphis vs. Iowa tonight. I doubt I’ll get to see Dunc, but I’ll for sure get to see another controversial player in the eyes of VEB, Anthony Reyes.

by bgh on May 30, 2008 3:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

considering that duncan had a .968 OPS

over the first 20 games of the season, it was probably best for us that we kept him around after spring training…

Come on.

That was only 15 games for him. By his 20th he was down to .857, and three games before that .968 he was at .870. He had a 3 for 5 night that kicked him up to 1.040. Sample size is always fun to play with.

Hell, Barton was at 1.029 just 15 games in, and Ludwick was a paltry .848 at the 20 game mark.

He's still an unproven commodity

Let’s just be patient and see what happens. Dunc is having a horrid year don’t get me wrong but we can’t expect all of our minor league players to make a huge impact. Dunc is still a proven power hitter going through a rough patch after his surgery. He played in real pain last year to try and help the team win. The kid is tough enough to make up for his lack of grace in the outfield and I don’t believe he’ll back down from any challenge. I hope Joe comes up and crushes the ball but I’m not getting overly exicited till he produces at the top level.

This is the right move

And I am proud of the organization for making it. This is something that I don’t think would have happened in the later years of the Jocketty era.

Good luck to Chris, I hope he can figure it out.

Kennedy -- C. Duncan connection

It’s well know TLR has disliked Kennedy for some time. He took numerous shots at him over the offseason and said Kennedy would be on a short leash in 2008. Perhaps when JMo approached TLR with the move of C. Duncan to Memphis as a fait accompli, TLR asked for a little something in return for going along with the program (and not squealing about it to the press)—purge Kennedy. It’s a bone to TLR. Might be how it’s going down. My only concern is that TLR doesn’t ask for AAA guys to replace vets. He wants vets to replace vets. Has TLR asked JMo to go acquire a vet 2B? Lord, not another Izturis.

He was taken off the 40-man roster, if I’m not mistaken…wasn’t sure if it was a numbers game or if they had lost confidence in him.

Le’ts hope Kennedy follows the above precedent. Perhaps he goes 3-4 in a come-from -behind win and then is DFAd.
