9-3 Cubbies going into the 8th.

I hope I didn't jinx Lohse too badly on Friday with the whole HR thing.  My bad.

Actually he look like Duncan had been "fixing" him again

Velocity down, missing low and away with sloppy pitches.

by DriverZn on May 3, 2008 6:19 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

And, he can't help but fix him. He just can't. And he can't pitch that way. He tried last year.

I hope he gets through the ninth okay, that is if they let him.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

He has always been shaky at the start of the game......if he only gets an inning to do his thing,

I just don’t see him having a lot of success in the pen. Not that it can’t happen given enough time to adjust, but if he pitches poorly he won’t get that time to adjust.

ugh, reyes is messed up again

Slinging the ball low and away to the hitters instead of driving it up in the zone. I don’t know if its Reyes being off or the coaches “fixing” him, but when he pitches like this he cannot get MLB hitters out.

by DriverZn on May 3, 2008 6:27 PM EDT reply reply   0 recs

at least the changeup still works.

That makes like the 4th time he threw it this year.

Reyes is a much tougher dude than he gets credit for.

You don’t even show your face after last year unless you have ice water running in your veins. It is beneficial to work through a couple of bad inninings unscathed when you don’t have your control, command, or your stuff.

I tip my cap to you, Mr. Reyes. And your wonderful outfielders who helped in ways that allowed you to escape.

But hey, that’s what teams are supposed to do-pick each other up.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

by jillsinmo on May 3, 2008 6:37 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I don't doubt his toughness

but when he’s touted as a closer, considering everything that’s been shown, that’s an adventure in itself. I like Reyes, but it’s getting more and more clear, if he develops, it won’t be under the arches.

by AdjustedExpectations on May 3, 2008 6:39 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I have never said I wanted him to close. I have said he should be in the starting

rotation or traded. Since field management didn’t think he was good enough to be in the rotation, he should have been traded right then. They’ve been trading him since 2005-except he’s still here. Just do it damnit! Getting a few mop up innings here and there isn’t doing anything for his trade value, it isn’t doing anything about keeping him sharp. It’s just stupid.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

by jillsinmo on May 3, 2008 6:45 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I wasn't implying

that you said he should close. If you look down, and look during Izzy’s blow up yesterday that’s been the general tone, giving it to him. Somehow, someway, forgetting the fact that he has large issues settling in this year and last year, that as a closer you may go 5 games without a pitch thrown etc. That’s what I was referencing as touted.

And I agree, he does just need to go. But I don’t blame Mo and co on waiting on it. Reyes is one of the higher trade prospects in pitching out there. Sit on it till they’re desperate enough and get something of value.

He won’t be here by the end of the year, I’ll stand by that thought.

by AdjustedExpectations on May 3, 2008 6:52 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I disagree. They are playing with fire. If he gets hurt, there's nothing. If he can't

perform in his new role, one that I think everyone can acknowledge is going to be a tough transition, there’s even less value. Maybe he raises his value by gutting it out today. That’s what he did. GM’s like players that stay and fight. I do blame Mr. Mozeliak for not doing something. It’s stupid. Why would you even CARE about what you get? He DOES have to get him off of the roster. It’s not fair to anyone-Reyes, the minor leaguer (Jimenez!) that he’s blocking, and Dave and Tony still have to look at his face everyday! Mr. Mozeliak is using him to make a power play. I think it stinks.

I like Reyes. I don’t like that he has to go. I’m going to follow him to his new team, at least for awhile. That will make oh, so many of you all happy. Then I’ll finally shut up for real.

Cheers. Have a nice night.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

by jillsinmo on May 3, 2008 7:05 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

As far as happiness, it makes me no difference to be honest. So I don’t know where that came from. However, on the blocking point. You can’t block someone if the person they are blocking can improve with more innings in AAA. Jimenez is not peaked in AAA, he can still gain from being there. So can Perez, Motte and the like. With all of the effective innings our starters are giving, there’s not many innings in play.

And I do care what we can get. Reyes is cost controlled for the next two years, he isn’t locked into the roster and can be put back in Memphis, Reyes is making a nice chunk of change irregardless of what he does, and that’s the contract he’s signed.

The players union does everything under the book to try and get the players everything they can, the team management deals with that. The team has every right to do what they need to do in regards to a player.

If this conversation was about Thompson, that’s one thing. But we’re talking about Reyes, who had a load of chances last year and frankly, didn’t show up.

Everyday he ups his value, irregardless of what he does on the field. That’s the economics of baseball. At the end of last year all he could do is go up and he is.

The happiness comment is in reference to me and this site, and how

annoyed some on here get with me and my comments regarding Mr. Reyes.

Oh, he makes 2,500.00 over the minimum. And he didn’t sign the contract. They renewed him. He exercised his right to not sign; they exercised their right to pay him what they wanted to. They are doing exactly what they want; at this stage he can sit and take it, take it and scream publicly about it, or quit.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

blocking Jimenez?

then he’s even more valuable than I thought! thankfully someone is keeping Jimenez off the roster…

I have a love/hate relationship with the Cardinals' middle relief corps.

by madding on May 4, 2008 5:53 AM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

There is no guarentee Duncan will be back next year.

His contract is up at the end of this year. Is Reyes suddenly more valuable if they don’t bring Duncan back? Mo would know his thinking on this far better than any of us.

We have a lot of holes in the 09 rotation, No set pitching coach for next year. Having a backup plan in Reyes makes a lot of sense in that context.

I get the impression that its more Duncan than TLR that dislikes Reyes.

by DriverZn on May 3, 2008 7:10 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Yeah

Why wouldn’t you want to sit on a cost controlled pitcher who three teams have been open about shopping for?

The season is young, we were the team last year that had to look anywhere and everywhere for a pitcher. There will be new teams in that place this year. When they’re there, they’ll come with more to the table.

And if no one does, no harm, no foul. We have a new look at him next year and evaluate from there.

I do too, in regards to Dunc vs Reyes. There’s no harm in keeping a cost controlled guy around when your staff will empty out at the end of the year.

Sigh

1.) He’s third on the relievers list in innings pitched. He also carries an era of over 5. The two with a couple more innings, not a large amount mind you. Both carry an era under 2. I’d say he’s getting used.

2.) He signed the original contract that allowed them to renew. Now you’re splitting hairs on false points.
