There was an interesting article in the Memphis paper this past weekend about Mather

About how he had his bag all packed to make it to STL when they called him and said “Nah, Ankiel’s not that bad, you’re staying in Memphis”

Skip

he’s just as bad as Duncan, both offensively (their OPS is basically the same) and defensively (Skips RZR is worse, actually), yet because he’s scrappy and untalented, he gets a pass, just like Aaron Miles.

It is not the steroids

it is the inability to change his swing to hit major league pitching. It is a stubbornness thing. When he keeps his swing quicker and shorter, he is fine.

duncan

Looper lost this game.
But Tony isn’t helping anyone by playing Duncan who is only embarrassing himself.
One can’t help but think when Duncan strikes out or makes a poor play in the field that you don’t want him in there. T
Watching Duncan at the plate is a bit like listening to Bud Selig talk.
Neither of them would be where they are, save who they know.

by leftcoastfan on May 27, 2008 10:15 PM EDT reply actions

It has to weigh

on the minds of the other players as well.

They know what is going on … it is hard to ignore forever.

Whatever trade we do next, Duncan needs to be in it.

by Egyptian on May 27, 2008 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Duncan has options

why not let him go to Memphis, gain some confidence.

Bring up Mather. See what he can do. Or bring up Freese and let AK go.

Its over for Duncan.

Other teams still see value in him and we should get it while we can.

We have plenty of options. Duncan’s presence is a downer for the whole team. He needs to go.

If we all know he is a rally killer … don’t you think they know that?

When we trade a starter, Duncan needs to be in the package as well … I don’t really care what we get in return.

Yeah,

I don’t think anyone wants to get rid of him … it just is the way it is. We have a lot of good young outfielders and Duncan is getting in the way. If we realistically see him as contributing in the future, then keep him, but with the outfielders we have on the ones we have in the pipeline, I just don’t see a role for Duncan … ever.

If he was a better pinch-hitter, I could see keeping him around. But, he isn’t.

It is better for Duncan too if we get rid of him. He can perhaps go back to first and make it with a team at a position where he is more comfortable.

Sigh...

this was the sort of game I was expecting to be the norm for this year. Instead I was surprised by the team actually being good for almost the first two months. I just hope this isn’t the real team finally coming out, though I think it probably is.

With Kennedy hitting like last year, Skip hitting like Skip, Duncan hitting like Skip, Ludwick not playing, this is just going to be a painful team to watch. And then there is the pitching.

by stlcardinalsfang on May 27, 2008 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not just one game, though...

It’s basically one month

After going 18-11 the first month, the Cardinals have now gone 12-12 in May, and will probably lose the series to the hot Astros (at least if Kennedy continues to play and Ludwick continues to be benched in favor of Skip and/or Duncan)

Start Ludwick

by DiscoJer on May 28, 2008 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions

While I don't know about losing to Houston or not

the month of June will be brutal on the Cardinals. If LaRussa continues to manage the lineup the way he is currently doing, we could be looking at a losing month. It’s one of the toughest stretches I can remember in recent history. If we can stay within 5 games of the Cubs on July 1st, I’ll be shocked.

by Hardcore Legend on May 28, 2008 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions

The June schedule looks tough

But I feel like the same was said going into May. “In April the sched was easy, but May will be different.” Well, we’re not 7 over .500, but we’re not 7 under, either. As far as the teams we play, we do start off June with two against PIT, then 3 at WSH. We could/should come out of the gate 4-1 (3-2 at the worst, 5-0 at the best) in June.

2 vs PIT
3 at WSH
3 at HOU
3 at CIN
3 vs PHI
3 vs KCR
3 at BOS
3 at DET
3 at KCR
1 vs NYM

The fact that 18/27 (66.7%) of our games are on the road is troubling, but we do get some against PIT, CIN, and KCR. Hopefully the Tigers won’t have caught fire by then, and the same for the Mets. The 3 in Boston looks like a 1-2 series at best.

The series

If we can make hay vs Pittsburgh, Washington, Kansas City (who has gone back to sucking) we might make it out of the month ok.

the good news is

CWS, toronto and even baltimore aren’t looking like the pushovers I thought they’d be earlier in the season; although the entire AL is weaker than expected this year, maybe those teams will be able to do some damage to the cubs in June.

Oh, and “go tampa bay!”

But

It looks like you think this team is gonna revert to 2007 ways because of how we played in one game. I seem to remember a 3-5 road trip against Colorado and Milwaukee that made me feel the same way, but they came back and played some good ball. This past weekend they went 4-2 at San Diego (not that great) and at LA (a mid-to-top level club in the NL). We’ll see how they come out tomorrow, although your concerns over the lineup are definitely valid.

Was at the game

a few notes:
– Looper was totally just “arming” it. No body, just total arm.
- I have never heard a louder crack of the bat than what the Astros were getting off Loop.
- Berkman is Fat Elvis.
- Duncan is . . . not that good right now.
- Ankiel’s nickname should be “the Rifleman”. The cannon on that guy.
- Astros have a serious lineup
- Having Ludwick not playing right now would be like asking Bob Gibson to skip a turn in ‘68. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
- Barton doesn’t look that bad in the field. Good routes to balls, quicker that crap through a goose on the jump.

Skippy is an outfielder

And Duncan is a first baseman standing in left field.
It’s just not Cardinal baseball. Outs falling for doubles, catchable balls going for home runs.
Fine for Manny or Carlos Lee. But not if you are hitting what he is hitting.
He has no idea of the strike zone, it seems like Duncan is always looking back at the ump and asking if that was a strike. I
It’s not just that Duncan is below average, it’s that he is playing instead of Ludwick.
what does that say about LaRussa’s will to win to the team?
What does that say to Ludwich about La Russa’s trust and confidence in his skills

Ladies and gentlemen your AL East er I mean AL All-Stars

Anybody check out the voting thus far for the American League All-Stars? Looks like it is going to comprise of all Red Sox and Yankees players….oh yeah with Vlad Guerrero.

This is why MLB needs to get on the media to start covering/promoting some of the other teams in baseball and not just the Red Sox & Yankees all the time. I realize the game will be played in Yankee Stadium, but man it would be nice to see some of the other great players in the American League get a chance at the spotlight other than a Red Sox or Yankee.

The constant focus on just the 2 Super Power East Coast teams with the media is really going to hurt baseball across the whole country pretty quick if some of the other teams don’t get a fair share of coverage. Just my opinion.

by KYCards on May 28, 2008 1:57 AM EDT reply actions

You are so right.

I used to get the Braves on TBS on cable. Now they do a Sunday game only and it usually is the same two teams Fox does the Saturday before.

I do still get some games on WGN, both the White Sox and the Cubs. The White Sox have been all grit and guts and young pitchers and veteran pitchers that have been just good enough. They are my favorite AL team right now. Too bad they don’t get featured much…....

Folks that decide these things are going to follow the dollar, and the dollars appear to be on the east coast. I’m more disappointed in ESPN—they should be the network showing us these other teams. How about putting them on ESPN 2 every once in awhile?

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.
