if anyone wakes up in st louis tomorrow and charter communications has burned to the ground…...not me…....ok me.
I am the only/last Anthony Reyes fan!
online chat, I was #996 in the queue and the phones are still busy.
"How depressing is it being you? Would you equate it to being a lifelong Cubs fan?"
Having moved to the left coast
I’d have to say that not dealing with Charter’s shit would be reason enough to move if I had to do it all over again. They’re absolutely apalling in every way. St. Louisans should riot. Seriously. Rise up and destroy them.

If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, perhaps you haven't grasped the situation!
I hate Miles
We have two TRUE FUCKING SHORTSTOPS ON THE ROSTER WHY IS HE PLAYING SHORTSTOP.
With no evidence to the contrary, Colby Rasmus is clutch
then he makes this one!!

other than the scrabble/ouija approach, why does someone with tlr’s experience ask miles to do what he cannot do? baffling to say the least!

In Kennedy's defense...
He does have a 1.000 OBP tonight.
I'll give him that
sadly for the month of May it won’t make much of a difference to this line 151/.211/.189
The guy who gets the hard time with the bat – LaRue has .250/.400/.333 this month (SSS) to put Kennedy’s May in prospective

i can hear it now
lohse looks at lineup card and exalts over the defensive support laid out
If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, perhaps you haven't grasped the situation!
right side isn't bad
but the left? Miles+Duncan just don’t make me feel good about balls hit to the left side of the field
Of course I can only follow through gameday
But Lohse appears to be pitching his tail off, this team is on some kind of roll right now.
not really
he is getting very lucky to avoid his mistakes and his defense’s, but yes he is pitching great with little to no stuff, luckly he is probably done since his spot is up
damn lohse got away with the last two pitches

thankfully the Dodgers have a few has-beens
Franklin had a lot of guts yesterday, but a few of those pitches to Jones he usually kills us on.
last fastball to Martin
didn’t look like it was in a good spot, either. At least per pitch f/x. 96 pitches through six.
Way to pitch through it Lohse

Hmm, my 09 bullpen thoughts
Perez: lets see how he handles it this year, so good so far
Franklin: Decent but not great
Motte: Has only 1 good pitch right now, but it is hella good
Kinney: Can he come back?
Garcia: bullpen internship should do him some good
Johnson: How well does he recover?
Worrell: Will he have success in the bigs?
Yeah
Garcia is a viable option, but he is like wainwright, top of the rotation potential, we want to have him progress slow and steady and not over do it, Boggs I am not that worried about tossing out as a 5th starter if we need one
Doesn't McClellan
need to start for a while in AAA first?

He can get MLB hitters out
If he retools his arm over the offseason, I would think he coudl be fine.

he could try starting out of ST and see how it develops. Didn’t Looper and Waino do the same last year?

Last I remember hearing about Kinney
There were some complications with his rehab. Or something. I wonder if we’ll ever see him again, or if he’s locked in Paletta’s basement being experimented on.
he did have a set back
but i think it was one of the typical Tommy John not going as smooth as you would like type of things
broken bone i believe was the major set back
If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, perhaps you haven't grasped the situation!
Franklin has a 277 era+ and is 7th in all the majors in WXRL
"How depressing is it being you? Would you equate it to being a lifelong Cubs fan?"
means this year he's not decent
but in solid form

blah
i had a full response typed out that got lost, basically low BABIP, high LD rate, a FIP double his ERA (which is still low really) I just don’t think Franklin is as good as those stats make him out to be
Yeah, I don't think anyone expects Franklin to be outperforming Rivera and co. this year
but he’s been pretty good thus far, one has to admit.
They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...
yes he has been good
but not that good, and we have him signed so we might as well use him, who knows he might end up in the rotation next year
ERA+ is your ERA relative to league average and adjusted to the parks played in
with some other adjustments—a high ERA+ means a low ERA. 1968 Gibson: 258 ERA+
They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...
that said, there are a lot of issues with relief pitcher ERA
They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...

WXRL is like the VORP for Relievers.
I can’t find my BP book but it’s their metric of choice for relievers. If I remember correctly it takes into consideration leverage situations etc.
"How depressing is it being you? Would you equate it to being a lifelong Cubs fan?"
here
http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=6313
The qualities of WXRL to keep in mind:
- WXRL is a counting stat, measured in wins.
- All WXRL values are above replacement level—any below replacement-level performances have negative values.
- WXRL accounts for inherited and bequeathed runners.
- Leverage matters. A reliever who comes into high-leverage situations will accumulate more WXRL than a player who pitches just as well in garbage time.
"How depressing is it being you? Would you equate it to being a lifelong Cubs fan?"
Keep an eye
on the Memphis Flores. Great K/BB ratio (better than Motte and Perez last I looked), WHIP, good stuff. He is a lil prone to getting beat on a bit (3 games he’s gotten hit on, 20+ he’s been lights out). Nothing a year in Memphis can’t fix.

we gifted them two games
in the last series by bullpen collapses. massive lob totals and hits. Now we have the bullpen solidified so hopefully when we catch them back at home soon, it won’t be as big of an issue, but the Cubs have dominated them and gotten the wins to represent it. We have so far too, and have given them the wins.

The Pirates were much hotter earlier in the season. In fact, the Cards always seem to be going into series’ against hot teams. It makes their early success more impressive IMO.

actually
I’d prefer to put him in the highest leverage situations possible, not just dedicate him to the ninth.

12-10 in May
who was it that said if we did .500 in May, they’d start to believe?
We’re almost home on that one, what 2 more wins out of the next 6 to guarantee a .500 May? Not bad after that start.

13-11 on the road
one of only three NL teams with a winning record on the road

Our road record
and being able to win on the road will be a huge factor as the season goes on in this division and our race against the Cubs (who are not near as dominating on the road as they are at Wrigley). As long as we can keep pace with them we will be in good shape because we DO play better on the road than they do thus far. Although Houston is also a better than average road team as well. Sould be a fun summer.

postgame interview
He was the FSN player of the game, and the interviewer asked him about the fastball heavy pitch selection. His answer? He doesn’t know these batters at all so he just threw whatever Yadi asked for :-)
Ay caramba!
I have seen the Cardinals bullpen future, and the future is sick.
By sick I mean WOW…Perez throws a NASTY slider and a 95+ fastball. That kid is going to be real, real good, I think.
"Is this Heaven?"
"No, it;s Iowa."
"I could've sworn it was Heaven."
Nice win, boys.
Chris P was filthy tonight. I am not looking forward to facing Clayton Kershaw tomorrow. Young unknown pitchers like that always seem to hurt us. I would love for the boys to prove me wrong though.
He's kinda wild
And as the game thread today stated, if there’s anything this offense is good at it’s taking walks. Should be able to take advantage of #1 he’s naturally wild and #2 MLB debut wildness. I’m betting 4-5+ walks tomorrow.
With no evidence to the contrary, Colby Rasmus is clutch
I'd love to see a kickass lineup
against him, instead of the “well we won the series, sit half the crew out” ones Tony tends to put in around now.

Twenty dollars says
no one would have called that a “kickass lineup” coming out of spring training. It might have been labeled as an “asskick lineup”, but not the former.
"Is this Heaven?"
"No, it;s Iowa."
"I could've sworn it was Heaven."
It is not likely
we will see that lineup (and I know the one you are talking about) because they will be heading home for a day off after the game and they just had a day off on Thursday. TLR does like to win.
I hope so
Days off have really aided the situation this go around (and yeah, that lineup blew :( )

Question...What happens when Izzy gets it figured out?
Or when Izzy says he gets it figured out and is ready to come back?
Does Perez go back down, or does Izzy go on a rehab assignment, or does the organization try to delay Izzy’s return with another injury, like Mulder?
Either way, I really like how these young kids are making life hard decision wise for management.
"Is this Heaven?"

I think they should send McClellan down so he can start games at Memphis and compete for the rotation next spring.
K-Mac has been Tony vetted

Yeah
He can go down later this year if we’re out of contention. Or not.
by Red in Chicago on May 25, 2008 12:59 AM EDT up reply actions
I guess. I’d like to see him start.
They’ll probably send Parisi down when Izzy returns, if he isn’t sent down before then.
Parisi is the long man, Izzy will come back up I’m sure. But the decision won’t be as simple as that. If it were me? Springer would bounce for a bit – worst case.

But he's pitched well, too.
And frnakly, I love Izzy, but Parisi, McClellan, and now Perez are all getting it done. And unfortunately, you can’t say that about Izzy.
"Is this Heaven?"
"No, it;s Iowa."
"I could've sworn it was Heaven."
Parisi is supposedly the long reliever
I’m not sure what they would do, but Parisi and Izzy/Perez don’t have remotely comparable bullpen roles.
by Red in Chicago on May 25, 2008 1:02 AM EDT up reply actions
Just to complicate matters
Do you put Carpenter in the bullpen at first, or just wait until he feels good enough to start?
Well
It’s hard enough on the Izzy debate to find room, let alone Carp.
I think it may be a good idea to see how Carp is around trade deadline. Trade away Lohse and plug Carp in. Lohse isn’t going to be worth the value on the market, he’s trade bait. Get something for him if we can.
If Carp has a setback, there’s nothing to say we couldn’t look at Garcia coming up and giving him a 15 day spell.
Way too early to debate Carp though.

by AdjustedExpectations on May 25, 2008 1:11 AM EDT up reply actions
There's no way we'd get the value we could get from Lohse after just giving him arbitration probably
We’d get a 1st round supp pick and either a 1st/2nd rounder depending on who signs him. Unless we can get 2 pretty good prospects, it’d be worth it to just hold him.
For reference: for Renteria our compensation was Colby Rasmus (and Mark McCormick…but Colby Rasmus!)
With no evidence to the contrary, Colby Rasmus is clutch
Lohse also gets
a million-dollar bonus if he’s traded during the season, IIRC.
by Red in Chicago on May 25, 2008 1:15 AM EDT up reply actions
half mil
but even Looper can be in that conversation since he’s a FA next year. Just thinking that if we can get Carp in the rotation with Garcia as a backup incase of DL we may be able to grab a prospect of someone we won’t see next year.

Garcia + Boggs
Anyone know if Looper would be a Type A?
With no evidence to the contrary, Colby Rasmus is clutch
Egad!
I forgot about him…is that a good thing?
Put him in the rotation. He’s the hoss. Monitor his pitch count, maybe start at 80 and stretch him out start by start. By September he should be rounding out into top form, and you’ve got Carp/Waino/Lohse/Looper/Wellemeyer.
That’s a pretty damn good rotation.
"Is this Heaven?"
"No, it;s Iowa."
"I could've sworn it was Heaven."
he’s with us in ‘09 as well, so we’re going to be stuck with him I’d say, I don’t see him moving

ever heard of the principle of “sunk cost”? Pineiro & Kennedy both need to go.

He’s done exactly what he was signed for. League average ERA with 5-6 innings a start.

+1
Pin has kept us in games, even if it’s a little taxing on the ‘pen, but he’s a locked in piece to the huge pitching puzzle.
Add to that, he’s keeping us in games. I won’t complain.

Pineiro hasn't been great
but he hasn’t been horrible either. That last game in San Diego was lost on a bad walk and one bad pitch. He hasn’t been getting much run support either in his outings..that’s been his problem thus far.
I wouldn’t throw him under the bus yet….
Well, he's not one of the 5 best w/Carp back
If AK can be “Tonya Hardinged”, so can Joel, ha ha.
Just kidding on that, but I guess a trade of one of the starters isn’t out of the question, as long as Carp shows he’s the old Carp prior to the trade deadline.
It will definitely be interesting, that’s for sure.
