dammit

more annoyed that we didn’t score at all off their bullpen for 4 innings than I am that we lost….

2 runs o support sucks,

but keeping Joel in way too long sucks as well

I can't believe i gave up a homerun to that punch and judy hitter-major league 2

At least it was a starting pitcher and one pitch

not a bullpen.

Will Mo allow another terrible season by Kennedy?

Or will he cut his losses and DFA the chump come ASB when Kennedy is hovering around .250 with no power at all to go with it.

Don't blame Mo

LaRussa could play Ryan at 2B and make Kennedy irrelevant. He choses not to.

by Hardcore Legend on May 21, 2008 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions

i'm not blaming Mo, hell, he didn't even sign that piece of garbage

I’m just hoping he’ll use his better judgement and get rid of the crappy second baseman instead of sticking with him just because we gave him guaranteed money. Cut your losses at this point, the guy is clearly done.

and Kennedy may not be something special

but he’s not playing DFA worthy ball. It may be a wasteful

He’s not a liability, which is my core concern. He is, however, providing opportunity costs to Ryan and is trending down as he’s being platooned in less. DFA? In my opinion, no.

Which is fine with me

as long as he’s in the 2 hole.

Plus, Albert is fond of Solo shots this year

so if AK can just do his GIDP every time , Pujols will hit more homeruns.

by Raconteur on May 21, 2008 12:56 AM EDT up reply actions

You mind basing that off of....

stats?

Wasn’t his 2nd GIDP this game? Wasn’t both of his GIDP with Molina on 1st?

Look, I liked signing his contract as much as the next guy, not at all. but it’s done.

but calling the guy garbage and clamoring dfa is highly over the top in my opinion.

He had a solid set of games in the #2 hole this year, he was platooned out and never came back to the #2 hole, but the GDIP attribution is quite false.

I don't think it's over the top at all

he is garbage and he should be DFAed. I’m sorry if you don’t agree.

he is the last two weeks.

or three. He started out “OK” (.740 OPS over the first 13 games, when platooned) but has been completely worthless since.

I mean, his defining moment in this game was getting an RBI because his groundout scored a man from third without being a double play (which he ruined later in the game with another GIDP).

.542 OPS in the last month, .372 in the last 2 weeks, and that isn’t including tonight’s 0-3 with a GIDP.

The guy is totally rolling out there naked.

So say we DFA Kennedy.

You want Ryan to play almost everyday? Do you think he can take on that workload? So we get Miles at SS when Iz needs a day off? Which means, Miles now gets a strong possibility of more games? And that’s a good idea?

Is there a 2nd baseman out there that we can get? Is Hoff equal or better defensively? Meaning, will we be inheriting a liability? Is Hoff really going to outhit Kennedy? Yeah, I know it seems that it will be easy to do based on Kennedy, but calling up Hoff now shouldn’t contain the possibility of stunting his production, that’s all we need. Keeping in mind he wouldn’t play everyday.

My case isn’t that Kennedy isn’t replaceable, but I don’t think a DFA is neither wise, nor sensible.

He did have a solid look at some pitches when he was sitting in the #2 hole, despite the GIDP fallacies.

And for the record, I’ve been an advocate of forcing Kennedy on a trade along with whomever even if it means costing us some of his contract to unload him. I’ve been a bigger proponent of Uggla coming over here (even when he was during an abysmal start to this year). I’m not a fan of his contract, nor the opportunity costs he’s here. Just don’t think the case for DFA is there

You do know that if he is DFA'd

we won’t operate with a 24 man roster. We will call up another player, probably a MIF.

And even if we didn’t, when Izturis needs a day off, Ryan could move back to SS and Miles to 2B.

by Hardcore Legend on May 21, 2008 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions

mentioning Hoff should give some inclination I’m aware of the roster spot.

it's not just this year (.621 OPS)

he was terrible last year (.572 OPS), and terrible even in spring training this year (.645 OPS). SOMEONE is available from somewhere that will be able to put up acceptable defense and better than replacement-level offense. I mean, the guy has 130 PA’s and FOUR extra-base hits. That is pathetic.

For that kind of offense, I’d argue that we’d end up ahead to bring up Joe Mather and put HIM at second base. or (gasp) skip f*ing schumaker, and let him make some errors.

And I awoke in California, far far from Spancilhill...

by SleepyCA on May 21, 2008 2:56 AM EDT up reply actions

we’ll, I’d be against Skip, just because of the “lock in” we seem to have already with him (“defense”, “lead off type” – note the quotes/sarcasm). Mather I’d be excited about, but I have a man crush.

I’ll take on his poor performance this year, but last year he was injured, not exactly something to slam him on.

I can’t believe I’m defending Kennedy. Hell, I’m not trying to, I’m not even defending him per se, what I am defending is the whole DFA approach to handling him. (and the GIDP assertions, which were clearly off)

One is a workload issue that will slide down to the other three in the MI, the other is a possibility of a “Barton effect” (with respect to lack of another recent name) – not wanting to stunt production of someone doing well by having them ride pine here with us.

He may have some trade value should we take on part of his contract, while not a great 2nd baseman, he’s still better than a few out there and there may be some need for someone to take him on. Velez in SF is worse than Kennedy, Uribe in Chicago, Cabrera in Cleveland, even the team we’re playing now is having lackluster 2nd base performance. Hell, he could even go back to the Angels in a package containing a pitcher since they look like they could use both (rumors/performance).

Again, I’m fine with him leaving overall, I’d even buy a ticket to see his last :) game. But I’ll continue to contend that doing it via DFA is over the top.

and

while I’ve mentioned Uggla a couple of times and my support thereof, it’s getting more and more clear… he has a couple more solid months like his May, he’ll price himself well past anything we can offer.

Well, you said "not DFA worthy".

What would “DFA-worthy performance” be to you? The hot first week masks it a bit, but the guy is on pace to have a historically bad season- if he continues the slide he’s been on since the 13th game of the season, and gets 500+ PA’s, he’ll have had the 3rd worst season for any player since 1980.

And we have zero reason to believe he’s going to reverse his slide. Unless you are seeing something I’m not seeing.

Ew

we got Chris Young going for them tomorrow.

Gonna be pretty hard to avoid a series loss with him on the mound for them.
