Is this another Rolen/Mulder situation where the guy is denying an obvious injury?

What I think I’m pissed about is that I think he’s injured again and not saying anything.
Blowing a save b/c you don’t have your stuff happens.
Blowing a save b/c you can’t say I need rest/rehab (especially after 2006) is ridiculous.

Why are there closers in the game of baseball?
It’s clear Izzy isn’t on the top of his game now, but yet he’s pitching in the 9th because it’s his job. Personally I want my pitchers to be mentally tough enough to pitch no matter the situation. And when Izzy is pitching good and the heart of the order is coming up in the 8th? Should we send out another guy or should we send him out to get the toughest outs.

that's a situation where first pitch swinging is ok
a strike out is the worst possible scenario there. So first pitch you see that you can lift you swing at. Certain times call for first pitch swing.

How shitty is it that Skip isn’t on the all-star ballot?
Izzy’s problems are not workload, there’s seriously something there. Give him his ten saves and let him retire out. But when you do, do it against the Pirates 7-8-9 and not the Cubs and the heart of the order.
We wouldn’t have been in this position if Villone wasn’t as strong as he was, he’s the star for sure.
Those who clamor for Reyes to be a closer may want to look at when he’s pitched this year. Pure no leverage situations. No thanks. K-Mac or bring up a guy, thanks.

Izzy's Cutter
The consensus seems to be that Izzy’s injured. So far, I’m not buying.
His velocity is perfectly good. The problem just seems to be his cutter. It’s catching too much of the plate. Seems to me that’s an isolated issue of mechanics, not a physical issue.
I say, give him a bit so more rest, and have him work with Dunc on his cutter, and he’ll be fine.
On a sidenote, hard to see a spot for Johnson in the current pen. Villone’s earning his spot. And Flores isn’t exactly giving his up either.
So says, Titus Pullo (formerly The Dude)
by Titus Pullo on May 3, 2008 12:07 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I'm fine
with Izzy hanging around and working through what he has to work on. However, I don’t think he should be the automatic look when we’re up by 2 and the heart of the order awaits. He should be paid attention to in the warm up and judged from there, at least.

I'm not saying those were his conditions tonight
I’m saying that he shouldn’t be an automatic. Three runs against Pitt or Houston in the bottom of the ninth 8-9-1 is a hell of a lot different than 2 runs and the Cubs 8-9-1.

In short, I'm talking about the future, not tonight.
and you know that Sori would have been told about the cutter of Izzy, it’s no trade secret and after Sori’s shit defense he would have been sitting on it.
Izzy shouldn’t have been out there, because unlike a lot of 1 hitters, Sori does represent a hr threat.

why he was throwing cut fastballs when Soriano would have had trouble with Izzy’s curve. Just throw curves and sliders there and it might have been a shorter, less exciting game.

Right
Barton is a guy who had no ABs above AA comming into the season. Tony is getting him ABs in favoriable situations. It’s going to be like that for a least a few more months. Every one of our out fielders are playing pretty good.

Skip did have some nice plays defensively tonight as well.
Not knocking Barton, but there’s at least one play where I’d put even money on Barton not doing it. The rest are borderline.

I want tomorrow's game pretty badly
As Matthew Leach pointed out in the probably pitchers preview, though, the Cubs have hit Lohse well over the years to a .410/.452/.667 line.
I’ll have to re-read the section of the Book that pooh-poohs individual matchup data as non-predictive before gametime tomorrow morning.

Cubs have hit Adam well. He 5 hit them in 6 and a bit.

I'm not worried about his psyche
I’m concerned that a) he’s not getting enough ABs to progress, b) LaRussa is depleting his bench at ridiculous times in ball games c)the fastest guy on our team is out of the game by the 6th inning.

Breathe...
Barton is not only a guy who hasn’t had an AB above AA level until now, but he also had knee surgery during the off-season. Given the Cards’ track record of rushing guys back, I would think protecting a talented prospect would be a priority.
Also, LaRussa replaced our fastest guy with our second fastest guy who’s a much better defender in a close game (Barton is a minus fielder right now). Finally, Barton is batting .400 against RHPs…in 15 ABs. Do you really need to be told about small sample sizes?

re: izzy
One thing I love about the guy is he’s brutally honest and doesn’t sugar coat shit (assuming he’s telling the truth about how he physically feels)
I was watching a special on him and felt like an ass for booing him in 06 when his family was talking about how rough it was for him to be booed at home especially since he’s been the franchise allstar closer. He is right, it’s a “what have you done for me lately” town.
Booing kip wells is one thing, but booing izzy is another.
"How depressing is it being you? Would you equate it to being a lifelong Cubs fan?"
by rocKStark5 on May 3, 2008 12:39 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Well
The best way we protect Izzy and the potential for boos is frankly one thing.
Don’t get into save situations. However, that’s easier said than done. But if our first inning wasn’t a sudden close, or we didn’t have a idiotic play in the second, he most likely wouldn’t have even been in there.
But when he’s there, he needs to perform.
I hate the boos as much as anyone, and the idea that you pay a ticket so you can do whatever towards a player is silly and borderline absurd. But he’s part of the reason why there is an expectation for the Cardinals to succeed.
Booing your own player by my book is so ignorant, but I wasn’t there.

it's not so much a "What have you done for me lately town"
as it is a “what have you done for me lately” position. A Closer is the most hated player on the team when he is struggling, doesn’t matter what team, or what city. The guy who blows the game when your team is about to win, is hated. I’ve heard Trevor Hoffman get booed in San Diego on multiple occasions and he is a first ballot HOF Closer. I’ve heard Mariano Rivera get boo-ed in NY , and he is another sure fire HOFer. It has nothing to do with the city, it has to do with the job.
