Game 30 Open Thread: May 1, 2008

Chicago Cubs @ St. Louis Cardinals

Hill Wainwright
1-0, 3.79 3-1, 2.79

wainwright, don't forget, is coming off that 125-pitch effort on sunday . . . .  i know we're all geeked up, it being the cubs and all, but please try not to spill too much blood in the game thread tonight. you never know, buzz bissinger might be reading . . . .

the guys at Goat Riders of the Apocalypse tossed 5 questions my way, wanting to know what's up w/ the cards; answers here.

nice Q&A lb

though misdirected, I think the ‘evil empire’ comment can be considered a compliment of jealousy.

I'd rather my sister be a prostitute than my brother a Cub fan.

those guys

honestly, i was surprised you took the time to answer their questions. bleedcubbieblue i could understand, those guys seem like a joke…

Keys to the game for Wainer

Keep the scrubs (Theriot) off the bases, don’t give Lee or Ramirez anything to hit (even if that means walking them), throw Soto nothing but offspeed.

And for the hitters, just wait on Hills breaking ball. It’s the only thing he seems to be able to throw for a strike lately.

by cloistermaximus on May 2, 2008 7:39 PM EDT   0 recs

wow, great job...

answering those rather obtuse questions in a professional and polite manner. I don’t think any of us would have faulted you had you gone all Bissie on the dirty bums…

Did you get a chance to ask them anything?

Nice work as usual LB

As for the game, it looks like Ankiel is the only lefty in the lineup…

by mikeonthecards on May 2, 2008 7:48 PM EDT   0 recs

Fukuwho?

Alright Adam, we kept you in a 125 pitch complete game to “inspire confidence”. Let’s see if we can get you to translate that on the hill for us.

Speaking of Hills, over and under on getting punished on a hanging curveball is 3. The amount of damage depends if we have El Hombre or Iz up to bat. Nonetheless, with the winds blowing in from right, Albert may decide to go opposite field on ya. Just for shits’n’giggles.

Unless ya throw him junk all night and play the “unintentional.. “intentional walk, then I’ll chant the Winnie the Pooh song.. since I’ll be in the dog house for calling you a pussy in a G rated environment.

Keep the Mojo going Rick, we’re behind ya.

Go Cards!.

Duncan and Ricky can turn on a hung curveball like nobody's business too

Hill’s most likely problem will be a high pitch count, since he has been trouble locating his other pitches for strikes.. If the hitters are patient and can foul off the breaking ball, they can raise his pitch count up and get him out of the game early

I hate Carlos Zambrano.

There, I feel better.

Interesting lineup tonight:

Professor Dreads
Hobbs
El Hombre
Santa Glaus
Thudwick(I really like this nickname, whoever came up with it)
Yadi
Easy Out
Waino
Ryan

I would really like to see Ryan in the 2 hole tonight and bump everyone but pujols down a spot, but this should be interesting none the less.

Billy Crystal is a tougher out than Izturis.

that's like the tenth couple i've seen on the pregame

where a guy is wearing Cardinal gear, and his lady friend is wearing flubs gear.

why in the world would you date a flub fan? i’m sorry, but i just couldn’t do it.

could any of you single gents & lasses out there date a flub fan?

fyi, i also could not date a red sox, or stros fan.

Because lady cubs fans are easy?

Sorry, I couldn’t resist. That was in poor taste.

Girlfriend's originally from Chicago

Of course, when they lived there, they were all Cubs fans. She doesn’t care about baseball, the rest of the family has by and large made the switch to the Braves, although her Dad still roots for the Cubs most of the time.

my gf HATES baseball

but when I take her to a dodgers game, she wears blue, and when we go to SD, she wears yellow or brown or navy blue. It’s actually kind of fun.

Red team has won every game she’s done this at, so if I ever manage to take her to a cubs game, she darn well better wear blue. heck, I’ll buy her a cubs hat if it’ll keep the jinx alive…

Pujols

Since when does 28 qualify as advanced age?? I think the guys at Goat Riders were just looking for anything to criticize Pujols.

(although Viva El Birdos isn’t grammatically correct either. But we at least have a reason.)

Barton will go...

1 for 5 with 3 Ks, if he’s not pulled early. He is just not that good. He is rag tag and sloppy. The Barton infatuation will wane as he gets more playing time and a chance to show he doesn’t belong.

by birdman3000 on May 2, 2008 8:15 PM EDT   0 recs

I'll take over 1 hit for Barton

I still believe in the Professor.

I dunno,

we have a fair bit of power and fly ball tendency in our line-up tonight (although it’s true they’ve hit a lot more than us for the season).
