I hope this game isn't like the weekend nailbiters

They were all 6-Franklin affairs. Need a big lead so I can turn in early tonight.

If the Yost news turns out to be true

Let me be the first to say, that on behalf of all Cardinals fans and the rest of the NL Central, you’ll truly be missed. No, seriously.

we rip on TLR

but did u see where he left ben sheets in the 7th to give up all of his 7 runs that inning? maybe the bullpen was spent but how do you allow that to happen to your “ace”? plus he was cruising til that point…I can say I would be livid as a cards fan if TLR let that implosion happen to AW..he’s known to leave a guy in one or two batters too long but that was rediculous..

now Braun said the team shows up expecting to not win

I can't believe i gave up a homerun to that punch and judy hitter-major league 2

by punchinjudy on May 19, 2008 9:51 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

How about the fact that in yesterday's game

He left Braun and Fielder in to play the field (LF and 1B, respectively) and had Tony Gwynn, Jr. as the DH, hitting NINTH?!

What an idiot.

Completely unrelated

Was looking at the box score of the Memphis/Nashville game. Did anyone know that Russell Branyan is putting up huge numbers?? His line with Nashville so far:

.362/.453/.696 ops of 1.149 through 138 ab.

by paposse on May 19, 2008 9:17 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

THe same Russell Branyan who

couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat with St Louis last year?

"I could've sworn it was Heaven."

by MilCardFan on May 19, 2008 9:26 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah, that was a shame.

A Branyan hitting for his career-average OPS+ of 107 could have been enough to push us into the playoffs last year. i was VERY excited about picking him up last year and was massively disappointed.

Branyan is one of those guys whose career is a mystery to me. He hit 40 HR as a 20yo in A ball, and then 39 between A+ and AA as a 21yo, and put up a 1.112 OPS as a 22yo AA player despite striking out an amazing number of times. He’s been in the majors since he was 24 and before last year he’s never had a full mlb season under an OPS+ of 100, yet he’s been released by two teams, traded for a minor leaguer or ptbnl twice, and sold twice for under $1M.

You’d think SOMEONE would find a spot for him on their 25 man roster, as a pinch hitter or DH if nothing else.

And I awoke in California, far far from Spancilhill...

by SleepyCA on May 19, 2008 9:53 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He will show up on someone's roster at some point.

And I bet he’s going to have a good season/season and a half somewhere. Probably somewhere like the A’s.

Congrats to Jon Lester

Wow. Watched the last few innings. What a gem. 8k, 2bb, no hitter

I liked all the defensive substitutions in the 8th and 9th. Good stuff. Get Manny the hell out of there.

Agree on Lester. If it had been any other pitcher in that uni I’d have posted the jinx several innings ago.

by paposse on May 19, 2008 9:40 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They were new pitchers without much exposure to the league

I was at Bud Smith’s no-hitter in San Diego. What fun!

Also, on a related note, one of my colleagues told me the other day that his son just had a hitting lesson from Bud Smith. Bud sure dropped into obscurity fast!

by OCCardsFan on May 19, 2008 9:45 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's true

But didn’t Jiminez throw a 1-hitter against the Diamondbacks like the week before he no-hit them?

by Mr Redbird on May 19, 2008 9:48 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

True

Jiminez had some talent. He was a pretty good pitcher for a couple of years, right?

by OCCardsFan on May 19, 2008 9:54 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Correction

When Jimenez no-hit the D-backs while facing The Big Unit, it started a 4-start stretch for Johnson where his team was no-hit, 1-hit, 2-hit & 3-hit during his games. The 2-hitter was Jimenez as well; my brother & I were at that game (I still remember the sunburn from that day).

That said, the Cubs do deserve my pity, but never my support.

he's been okay...

decent average, decent power, smallish rbi total, but he did jump from A to AAA.

i think lately everyone’s been focused on craig absolutely tearing the cover off the ball in AA.

6'

When I play pickup ball many times I’m the tallest or second-tallest on the team, which isn’t good because I have no inside game. I’m a pretty good rebounder, but I’m more of a jump-shooter. If I’m ever on a team where I’m the 3rd tallest, then we’re in good shape.

My baseball (well, now softball) skillset

I’m a fat slow guy who’s good at chasing down fly balls, but terrible at grounders. I’m also a contact hitter, not alot of power, so my lack of speed isn’t very good in that instance.

I’m bummed cuz I can’t make it to any games in SD; I love Petco park. I’ve gotten to go to a couple of games in each of the last three years. it’s a beautiful park.

Hope to make at least 2 of the LA games, but the GF will have something to say about that… she’s still mad about me taking off all weekend for the SF road trip, and has decided she hates baseball.

ill give you the crying...

i dont think bowens dirty, outside of a few incidents. he’s just a very aggressive defender. thats why he’s so good. he jacks with peoples heads. its more frequent than you think, among any of the good defensive players.

he was a really good defender, but

how can you defend when he sticks his foot under the jumpshooters

god i hate that

and it never looks intentional. it looks like him placing a foot to pivot and watch the shot.

That's the thing about the infusion of players in the NBA from soccer-playing countries

It’s definitely increased the league’s talent level, but because soccer is the game of flops, basketball has turned into a game of flops. I wish they’d do something in the rules about it.

Having said that, the worst flopper I’ve ever seen in my life is Deron Washington, the player for Virgina Tech the last few years.

Let them hit groundballs. If he gives up alot of flyballs, with that cavernous outfield, we’ll be looking at another doublicious game (like yesterday!)

wellemeyer is a flyball pitcher. he is at his best when he is getting flyouts.

depends on the height of the fly ball

its those liners that will kill in that outfield

Disagree

This outfield is perfect for a flyball pitcher. Yesterdays doubles had more to do with hitting gaps and shots down the line. San Diegos offense is not nearly as good as TB’s

They weren't giving Lud anything to hit anyway

and maybe they thought they’d picked up on a sign from the dugout. No harm done by the PO if the pitch was going to be a ball either way.
