i dont think it's a bad idea

he would’ve been fast enough to possibly beat it out, and even if he does get thrown out, he advances the runners out of DP possibility and into scoring position

Interesting...

What's surprising is that LaRue has one of the hits.

I don’t understand why Skip doesn’t hit more, but somebody needs to teach him about gap hitting. Izturis and Miles are never gonna give you any more than singles.

Skip doesn't hit more because he doesn't have MLB starter skills

He isn’t a corner outfielder. If he could play 2b or SS, great. But right now unless he can outhit duncan, Ludwick, or Ank, he should not be in the lineup.

Keep in mind folks, we won yet another series where we lost the first game. Both in scrappy, pure grit and fighting fashion.

And we did it against a team that’s beating the Yankees and Boston down thus far. Hell they were 7 for 8 coming in. It’s nice to have a bullpen that keeps you IN a game for once.

I'll give the past couple of games

for skip, just like i gave the 10 or so games in April. But it’s also factual that the start of April and the start of May was absolutely horrid for someone you want in a leadoff role.

Skip needs to go day to day feeling pressure on his job, from the two on the bench and the possibilities in AAA.

I like the 9th inning heroics as much as any other fan, but he can give those just the same as a defensive replacement coming in during the 7th.

A great win today

but I do think Skip was the beneficiary of a drawn-in outfield. The ball just barely missed Crawford’s glove. But results do matter in my book, so kudos to Skippy.

well

kudos for skip for noticing that the outfield was back.

by Evilfrog on May 18, 2008 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

It's a losing battle.

There are those that decided some time ago that Skip Schumaker is not a major league player, and it won’t matter what he does. They seem to be the same ones that believe Barton should play every day, despite his declining stats (as you would expect from a guy that jumped from AA to the bigs). I think Skip is going to have trouble maintaining his everyday leadoff position without hitting an occasional extra-base hit. However, the options aren’t nearly as appealling as some seem to think. If you put Barton in there for a month, you are going to see his ups and downs, as well. Duncan has value, but I can’t justify benching 2 of our 5 OFs for him to start every day. Ludwick has to play every day, right now. Until he shows this to be a fluke, you can’t take him out of there. Skip has been streaky, but he still has a .353 OBP before today. That is getting the job done in the leadoff position, even if it’s not exceptional. I don’t see anybody else stepping up to take it away from him.

I’m ok with him being declared as a 4th OF if you can identify for me the 3 that have to start every day.

by etp_stl on May 18, 2008 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

My contention

is that if Rick is healthy and Ludwick has a bat, we have 2 OF and a platoon on the third. Skip’s real close to starting more games than even Rick. That’s not ok when this OF was s’posed to be results based.

I use statistics much as a drunken man uses lamp-posts – as support rather than illumination. - Andrew Lang

by AdjustedExpectations on May 18, 2008 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

But

I do agree that Barton isn’t the answer, or even duncan as some contend.

Just don’t slot Skip when doing the lineup card, look at his games and base on performance.. which was the whole idea of the OF this year.

I use statistics much as a drunken man uses lamp-posts – as support rather than illumination. - Andrew Lang

by AdjustedExpectations on May 18, 2008 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions

The fact is ...

only Ludwick has been consistent in the OF this year. Rick’s high points have certainly outweighed Skip’s, but his lows have been pretty bad, too. I don’t know if it’s good or bad, but your point about results-oriented decisions is a good one. I have the same problem with Ankiel being slotted in there every day. His performance hasn’t justified that. Right now, Duncan is getting more playing time than his results have warranted, also.

The fact is 4 of the 5 have been streaky, and each has good and bad points to their game. Skip probably isn’t an everyday player for most teams, but his glove and leadoff abilities have made him more useful than Duncan or Barton, so far. Maybe Barton can fill the leadoff spot, but LaRussa clearly doesn’t feel he is ready for that. I don’t know what he is missing, but I would guess it comes down to defense (in LaRussa’s opinion).

I don’t think any player should be above concerns for his job. I think it keeps all of them on their toes.

I don't want him out

just not in an “automatic” job in the OF.

This year has been touted as results based, yet it feels as if you can bet coin he’s in there unless he’s having a day off and it feels that part of the reason is the rationale of the leadoff role.

You show me a couple of walk offs, I’ll show you 25 games of funk. Results matter in a 5 man OF platoon.

Do we have to start applying the same logic to Miles?

Cause I really don’t want to acknowledge it, but the little bugger has actually been outperforming Kennedy lately. I can’t justify his defense over Izturis at SS, but at 2B? The fact is, he probably belongs in the leadoff spot until the heat melts him again.

My bad.

I should say IMO, he probably belongs in the leadoff spot.

by etp_stl on May 18, 2008 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I haven't been vocal about it

but I have. One of the commodities that Miles represents is batting very well against teams that he hasn’t seen before. His numbers in interleague play don’t lie. I think Miles numbers are so well because he’s being used in places where he should be used.

Because in the IF where Miles is concerned, he’s put in there based on results. Look at the games he’s been put in, interleague, roster issues (glaus hurt), or where he’s had above average success against the other teams starter.

Ryan needs more playing time though, if you need to think about Iz from the left side then I’d think about having Ryan in instead. And if you’re looking for someone who could suprise in a leadoff role in limited platoon fashion. Ryan may be the guy.

I'd really like to see Ryan improve his OBP numbers.

His batting average is much better than Izturis, and I’m not convinced that he isn’t a solid SS. But, right now you are still getting quite a bit better OBP from Izturis with a significantly lower BABIP. It worries me about what will happen when Ryan’s BABIP comes down from his current .346 value.

Right

and I see that as well which is why I’m leaning towards a platoon. But when Iz did go into leadoff during Skips first funk he looked terrible.

That was also at the beginning of the season.

He seems to have calmed down some since then, and he hadn’t played everyday for a while at that point. I would be curious to see him get another shot.

by etp_stl on May 18, 2008 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm ok with another shot

but he fills out that 9th double leadoff so well. So I dunno, he’s a leadoff batter anyways is where I’m coming from with the pitcher hitting 8th.

Yes

There’s no reason why we shouldn’t be giving the middle infield competition as much – if not more – scrutiny than the outfield. I’m still not sure why Ryan doesn’t get more playing time.

+1

and that’s revolved around my points on skip. If skip is laboring but in there because of the need for a “perfect” leadoff spot, I’d say on a platoon situation Ryan can fill that need when Skip isn’t there.

No one will agree with me

But I think Barton can/will give us the best option at the leadoff spot. I’d at least like to see play time split evenly between him and Skip – and in the case of Ank being injured, even playing time between Barton and Dunc. I really feel like I’m not seeing as much from the kid as I’d like.

I do

which is the core of my comments. How can anyone beat on barton for his numbers declining when he’s barely being used? How can skip be considered an automatic starter when this year was about results based performance.

Tony and Mo both said that this year was going to be staffed with result based performances. Tony has said many times that the reason for April was because they were fighting for their jobs.

My contention is the fact that for some reason there’s no fighting for jobs, it’s as if Skip won that job based on the last half of April, which is silly if you ask me when you look at his start of april, and even more seering.. the start of May.

by AdjustedExpectations on May 18, 2008 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I am not convinced, yet.

I think his body of work has been too small to make any definite statements about how Barton will do. I don’t think that Schumaker has proven enough to be given the guaranteed spot (which I believe is the point that Adjusted has been making), and I think Barton probably deserves to be given some additional playing time. I don’t understand why Duncan has gotten so much more playing time over Barton, though I kind of understand that they were waiting for him to break out. I don’t think you should give him the benefit of the doubt for a month, though. Schumaker has provided enough that he doesn’t deserve to be banished to the bench or Memphis.

I think Barton probably has more potential to be an everyday leadoff hitter than anybody we have, so he needs to be given an opportunity.

Here's something to take into context to what I've been saying

As of today. Here’s the game starting numbers for the OF

Rick (who has preseason bias) – 38
Skip – 35
Ryan (who has deserved starts based on stats) – 26
Duncan – 27
Barton – 14

My contention is that Skip has been getting an automatic lock to a job his numbers don’t support.

by AdjustedExpectations on May 18, 2008 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm with you.

I don’t disagree with your premise. I’m don’t understand why Duncan has an advantage over both Ludwick and Barton. I don’t understand why Barton has so few starts. I think that if you take away 10 starts from Skip and give them to Barton, then you are probably about where things should be. I personally think that Ankiel is probably getting a free pass that he hasn’t earned, but I know that will be pretty unpopular. Maybe I’m wrong. His defense has been pretty good, and when his offense has been good it has helped carry the team.

A part of me would like to see Ankiel on the 15-day DL just so that some of this could get sorted out. I think we agree more than we disagree.

by etp_stl on May 18, 2008 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions

As fans

we were pretty well informed that Rick would be the dominant fixture in the OF. I’m ok with that.

I take an outfield as if a starting 5 on a basketball team. The more the team is “centered” the better they will be. Rick’s time off has been pretty corresponding to play, which he’s in a slump it usually corresponds to time off. But with him being in center then it’s a foundation that’s always there, and one that saves us runs in the long haul. I’m ok with that.

But once you walk past Rick then we as fans were told that the other kids were to get time based on performance.

Which you just don’t see, Duncan’s an automatic when we’re facing a righty, skip’s glove (and it is overrated) and his leadoff role has cornered him blindly into almost as many starts as Rick, which was against the game plan.

Barton’s starts are way out of whack to what we should have seen by now and Ludwick’s starts don’t correspond at all to his performance on the field.

I’m trying two things, one of the tenets to our April has started to evaporate, it’s not a true platoon. Two, what was one of our strengths is quickly becoming a weakness.

And no, I don’t think overall we really disagree at all. But instead of me coming out and blasting Skip, Duncan, or whomever without any real rationale. I’m trying to make sure what I say has facts backing it up, and I want to make sure that I do it without bias.

If I don’t, we all lose. And I’ve enjoyed this discussion quite a bit.

You've given me plenty to research.

Your starting numbers were pretty eye-opening. I am going to do some homework to see what I think your best starting lineup would look like, based on the numbers. As I’ve said, I have a bias against Miles, but I’m going to try to look past it. In the OF, I don’t really have a bias. I do have some preconceived notions that I want to look at. I will try a fanpost on the topic.

here’s another point. LaRue was on base 3 times today. Woohoo.

he was the scoring run wasn’t he?

Hey, it was a good win, but ...

the regular season is a long haul. I don’t get too high or too low from any game during the season. I still think you have to look at the team as a whole when you are evaluating. If you look solely at results, then today probably isn’t the day to ridicule Skip. However, you do have to look at the situations over the course of time, and that is what we are discussing.

I'm not whining

I’m just trying to bring some context to the specific comments I’ve replied too.

Skips past two games are great, and i’m glad he’s came through on both, however when we had two 3 game losing streaks he was there, and his numbers didn’t support it.

We were told several things going into this season, and I’m pointing out one that isn’t being realized.

It’s May, we still have a lot more games ahead of us.

This discussion isn't whining.

This discussion is looking at the facts of the players’ performances and discussing what the best management decisions would be. That is what this forum is for. There were some others that making irrational statements about who’s awful and who should be sent down. Go chastise them. We’re talking about what is best for the ball club based on its current roster.

I just tend to think this so the guy hit 217 this month im sure thats been poitned out enough, he gets a great hit and they get a needed win then amybe that should be pointed out more…i just thought the whole topic would be a great fan post other than tagged to a win thngg just my opinion which i thought i could give

Oh,..

no offense taken on my end, seriously. Just debating points.

The great hit has been pointed out, by me and by most who followed the game today a lot more than this discussion.

Skip has more at bats than Ludwick who’s leading in a lot of offensive categories.
Rick who has been the only one with known bias towards everyday starts.
Duncan, who most can agree has been lethargic over the course of the season.
And has 100 more at bats than Barton, who everyone says has cooled off, of course he has, you don’t see pitches, you don’t hit them.

he has looked really bad and perhaps its still the hernia thing…when i had mine I fought scar tissue for some time. I had double not sure what he had. I think it took nearly a yr to get right. Heat and cold woud effect it at times. Sometimes I even wondered is this right..thats when it turnrned out i was fighting scar tissue..

Whatever it is he looks way off balance at times

His slugging is an eye sore, but at least his eyes are giving something back. And his starts reflect that, he’s started largely against RHP and with 27 starts he’s representing what he should. He’s being platooned with the other players.

I’ll take Duncan being platooned in towards his strengths. It’s worked for Miles reasonably well. But I do miss that bat that made people look twice. Surgery and changing swing shouldn’t have been done at the same time, it now puts too many variables into his offensive production.

But looking at his line he looks liked he did a pretty good job.

Though… he did seem to give up some doubles.

Why did the Rays have the OF in?

With Jason LaRue at 2B and 1 out, you could still get him out at home if you don’t let routine flyballs get over your head.

They chose to play in for some reason and YAY FOR US!!!!

That’s bad baseball on their part, though. After the baserunning yesterday and that move today, that has to be heartbreaking for them.

Why the Cardinals won that game.

I just got back from the game, and I can’t believe we stole one like that. That being said,
it was obvious what won us that game. Rays - 0 walks, Cards - 11 walks. If ever there was a display of OBP vs SLG, this was it. Rays hit the cover off the ball all game, but did only limited damage, when they managed to put two together. Cards had a few well placed hits (and missed several golden opportunities) but had runners on in every inning. With 11 walks, you’re going to leave some guys on. So here are the lines for the game:

Rays
.778 slugging .407 OBP 1.185 OPS

Birds
.556 slugging 0.568 OBP 1.124 OPS

Take the on-base every time, boys.

it goes both ways. We layered hits all over the place against the Pirates and they did the same thing we did to the Rays, stole late.

At least was our own fault, and more importantly – our management has brought Perez in.

I think the young relievers have been really exciting, so far. I have been very impressed with Parisi, so far. Perez has looked good in his first couple of outings, and McClellan has been pretty good. I think that some additional time will hopefully give them the consistency they will need. I would rather watch them work then Franklin, Springer, and even Isringhausen right now.
