I'm not
but I’m a realist, I don’t see the hitters supporting the pitching of the astros all season. If they (and we for that matter) are a discussion point post all-star break, I’ll believe it.
Remember, they were “on fire” when we played them the last series and we stopped them cold in two of the games, and the third was our usual winnable…. but not.
Unless Berk plays out of his skin season long.. which I doubt.

#1 Soriano is just bringing his season line back into expectations
If you’re going to say “it’s going to come down so we can throw it out for the future”, I’ll say his first month “was going to go up so we can throw that out too”. Berkman is out of his head and the ‘Stros just don’t have the pitching to contend long term I agree, but you can’t remotely say Ludwick is going to maintain this production.
With no evidence to the contrary, Colby Rasmus is clutch
Soriano is getting
some Wrigley special HRs…. as in just in the basket. The Cubs have played a TON of home games like us, let’s see what they do when they have to go on the road a bunch in June/July.
I’d say luddy’s steady drip is more likely to continue than what Sori is doing long term.
.500/.517/1.107/1.624 in 7 games before today. Playing the Pads, Pit and Arizona (one game good, one nothing)

So you're completely throwing out that he started out ice cold
He’s hitting .295/.331/.598 on the year. That’s less sustainable than Ludwick?????!!!?
With no evidence to the contrary, Colby Rasmus is clutch
He has those numbers by beating down on not one, but 2
bottom of division teams. Again, I’ll take a look in July, but two major series beatings does not make a season.
I do think he’ll trend down, if that’s what you’re asking.
I use statistics much as a drunken man uses lamp-posts – as support rather than illumination. - Andrew Lang
by AdjustedExpectations on May 17, 2008 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions
Trending down yes
Ludwick is hitting for a 1.130 OPS. At the end of the year Soriano will be closer to a .929 OPS than Ludwick will be to a 1.130, I’ll bet my right leg.
With no evidence to the contrary, Colby Rasmus is clutch
and Luddy has been projected to be the batter he portrays if he had been healthy and gotten at bats.
Feel free to bookmark this thread and we can revisit it at the all-star break and at the end of the season if you like.
I have no issues “eating crow” over this or anything I type, and I’ll stand by them now or later. It’ll be a nice discussion to look forward to anyhow.

I gotta clarify this to make this crystal. You feel that Ryan Ludwick will be closer to a 1.130 OPS at the end of the day on September 28th than Alfonso Soriano will be to a .929 OPS.
I will bet anything.
With no evidence to the contrary, Colby Rasmus is clutch
Um, No..

Actually Joker
if you’re still watching..
I’ll take a bet based on the numbers they have now and the difference at the end of the year. As long as you’ll take it on a percentage scale, + or -.
If they both downtrend, which is what we’re both arguing, I’d say Ludwick has a better chance of having a smaller proportion in that downward trend than Sori. Even at the numbers they represent.
Since it goes to the end of the year, I’ll foot a nice ticket to next years first VEB day at the park, unless there is more than one announced, then I’ll pick the date you prefer.
if you want it to be an equal bet, then a ticket will suffice as well. My work has me in NY in a couple of weeks and then in Melbourne for a few months so I don’t know if I’ll get to use it, but I’ll be glad to prop someone else to go if I can’t, or find a charity or something that could use it instead.
So whatcha say?
On a proportional basis Ludwick has a smaller negative difference than Sori by the end of the year.

Berkman's babip
looks too high to be sustainable, but as for umph, his ISO has always been high when he’s healthy. He’s definitely looking health now.
Wish Wheeler & Miller were back w/ the Astros so our boys could see more of those slow sliders they throw.
luddy's actually been unlucky
as crazy as that sounds, with his 35% LD rate, he should have an even higher BABIP than .414.
Berkman, OTOH, has a 16.7% line drive rate- his babip should be in the high .200’s, not almost .400.

Berkman's hitting 28% of his fly balls into the stands
My guess is the BA & OBP will come down, even if he continues to maul the ball. I thinks he’s more likely to continue hitting a lot of home runs, but not at this rate. I sure hope not anyway.
That I'll agree with
but the sheer amount of balls that’s falling for him is unreal. It’ll slow. When the team goes a couple series with pressure I think they’ll fold into themself.
I’m hoping anyways, because frankly, I don’t want this to be a 3-4 team race.

if the NL wins the All-Star Game this year….that will shut up alot of the media about the AL over the NL. The NL is a better league thus far this year in my opinion.
It's impossible to tell
You just can’t look at stats or game to game things within a league to see if it’s better. I’m sure the PCL looks pretty good like that in certain aspects.

Watching the Gameday replays
I know it was touched upon in the other discussions, but I still think it’s under-discussed: what were the Rays doing running on Molina so much today? What do they think they know that the rest of the league doesn’t?

That was a sweet tag Santa laid down between the legs on Yadis throw to third.
"Why does he keep saying that?"
checked the replay
it WAS pretty. He knew what he had to do when the ball was in the air & forced the runner to slide between his feet. SMART play.
and if you look back at the second assist that Rick had
in his two assist game you’ll see that having glaus all over it as well, swipe tag and perfect block on the base.
For someone projected to be mediocre at best defensively on 3rd base, he sure is showing that to be a fallacy.
I’m starting to have a man crush on Glaus, sigh

Those were pretty, too, but no man crush here
Glaus is good at the deke, no doubt.
From what little I saw early in the season, Glaus will sometimes drop down & fail to keep on top of the ball when he throws flatfooted, and then the ball takes off on him. Hate that.
Glaus has made a bunch of good plays lately, judging from comments in VEB. I’m curious how many are tough plays in the zone, and how many are out of zone plays, especially to his left.
I’ve seen some video of Glaus going back on pop ups & he looked better than I expected. Might come in handy if Izturis makes a habit of falling down on them
yeah
I know what you’re talking about, I seen that too.
But each day he seems to get more comfortable. I’m thinking it trends along with the fact that he’s getting more secure in using his feet now that he’s off the turf. Players with that condition on turf tend to really play flat footed to keep the pain to a min.
A couple of other examples.
Like 5 great grabs in the cubs series, two of them were down the line, brilliant snags.
And I’m sure there’s a gameday of the bunt he charged and caught a few games back.
i couldn’t say he’s the best on the deck , there’s times/games he seems to be eaten up, but all of his issues so far hasn’t cost runs (as far as I can remember) and for the most part outs.
We didn’t lose defensively on that trade, that one I’m willing to argue. Hope his bat keeps plugging along.

I don't think so
I think we already had to use an option year on him since he is on the 40 man roster, but I could be wrong.
After Dusty asked him to bunt
That guy is an idiot. That’s twice that he asked a guy to bunt in the 9th, only for him to fuck it up and then jack a game-winning dong.

I don't know but that was a monsterous blast
I think it landed in the last row, in the upper deck, a few more feet and it would have been out of the park.
Anyone that wants to see this blast should go check the highlights on MLB.com, it was impressive even for Dunn.
because of the black out
i couldn’t see the game till the final inning & i couldn’t get to a computer till now.
so with that being said, i know it’s late, but better late than never.
