A youth movement is great, but money is power.

Even though the cards are still treading water or are atleast doing better than I think most of us expected I like to look towards the future.  I praise the work the boys do over at Future redbirds and other sites such as project prospect and so forth.  With all that being said, I did some research and seek the communities thoughts and opinions on next year.  I Have been looking forward to this coming off season for a couple years now, it could be the ultimate infusion of youth with alot of money to spend.  I ventured over to cots contracts to see whom would be leaving along with what money the team would be recouping to spend.  Please take into consideration these are just rough numbers I was tossing around while sitting in a lecture hall class for 6 hours today, and also I don't know how to make a roster Matrix.  Anyways...

Leaving/signed to 1 year deal (the salaries are either what they earned this year or a option that could \be declined)
Izzy-8 mill
Randy Flores-1 mill
Looper-5.5
Mulder-11 million with a 1.5 buyout
Clement-8.75 mill with a 0.25 buyout
Izturis-2.85 mill
Springer-3.5
Instant breakfast-6.5 mill
Lohse-4.25 mill
Welly-1 mill
Miles-1.4 mill
Spizio-2.3 mill
Larue-1 mill
Edmonds 2 mill.

These players above are guys whom probably wont be back or will need to be resigned.  Personally I hope all of em are gone.  The total ads up to roughly around 55 million.  That's 55 million off the book!  Good Lord! And to think I didn't even include some of the kids that we don't know what to do with...i.e. Tyler Johnson, Josh  kinney, wonderbrad...etc....  I just did the above to show what would be leaving.  It doesn't mean we will have 55 mill to spend on free agents.

The following guys have significant guranteed money for next year (the money is the contract for 09')
Albert-16 mill
Glaus-11.25 mill
Kennedy-4 mill
Yadi-3.25 mill
Carp-14 mill
Wagonmaker-2.6mill
Pinero- 7.5 mill
Franklin- 2.5 mill

So this group of core players is making around 61 million for the 09 season.  This doesn't include the outfield as ankiel will be arbritation elgible, Ludwig will need a new contract, and skip, barton, and Duncan will all need to be settled for small amounts. *( A wrench gets thrown into the outfield for next year but I will talk about that at the bottom).

Anyways so lets say the cards are going to try and hit that 110 mill payroll.  The core takes away 61 mill.  So we need to fill the rest of the roster with around 50 mill.  This is what i was looking at including the core. For the youngster i just went with 0.5 mill cause I figured there would be somewhat of a raise in their price for next year.
Bullpen
Franklin-2.5
Kyle Mc.-0.5 mill
Parisi-0.5 mill
Perez-0.5 mill
Motte-0.5 mill
Villone-1 mill

Rotation
Carp-14 mill
Wagonmaker-2.6mill
Pinero- 7.5 mill
Welly- 5 mill ( I don't know his status so i could be way off, but if he continues to pitch well I think the cards will sign him, I am just guessing an amount).
J. Garcia-0.5 mill

Infield
Albert-16 mill
Glaus-11.25 mill
Kennedy-4 mill
Ryan-0.5
Yadi-3.25 mill

outfield
Ankiel- 7 mill
Ludwig-2.5 mill
Skip-0.5 mill
Barton-0.5
Duncan-0.5

The total after all this is right around 81 million.  So now what we know, is that mo is basically going to have around 29 million to get a veteran Loogy, 2 infielders, and a back up for yadi which could just be Anderson if he continues to impress.  So put yourself in the place of Mo.  What do you do?  Do you go after Furcal/ Cabrera?  Do you toss welly to the side and go for another pitcher?  Do you try to add a more veteran presence to the outfield?  What do you do with guys like T.J., Kinney, wonderbrad, reyes, etc...  Let me know people!!!!  You got a good chunk of cash!

*Lastly, the wrench,  as I did this, i kept looking at the outfield and realized that Rasmus should be here.  I know he is playing bad right now but unless he continues to struggle all year, he should be in the outfield next year for opening day.  Larussa is not going to keep 6 outfielders, so does this mean we should really expect Duncan to go at some point this year.  The signs would point to yes.

I appreciate your time for reading this and voicing your opinion.  Again these are all just rough numbers and estimates for next year.  Let me know If I am way off.

One more guy coming off the books

Is Juan Encarnacion who is pain 6.5 mil this year.

he's got him

“instant breakfast”

On with the (good) youth movement!

Furcal or Hudson

1.) Furcal – Dewitt and Mo HAVE to land this guy. He would instantly give us a.) A leadoff man with speed b.) a MIF with pop c.) gold glove defense. He’s going to ask for a lot, and the Cubs will be hard after him as well, but it really has to be done.

2.) Bryan Anderson should back up Yadi and split playing time 60% Yadi, 40% Anderson. If they shy away from Anderson, take a 1 year flyer on a guy like Javier Valentin to back up Yadi.

3.) Keep Wellemeyer – He has found a place here where he can succeed.

4. )LOOGY – Damaso Marte, if not re-signed by the Bucs, would be the ideal candidate. Dennys Reyes would be better, but he is going to cost alot. Those are the only 2 ++ LOOGY’s on the FA Market next year, so they will be hard to sign w/o ponying up big bucks.

5.) Rasmus will be a starting OFer next year barring an abysmal spring. The leaves one spot for the Skip/Ludwick/Duncan/Barton combo. Ideally we’ll deal Skip/Duncan, keep Ludwick as a backup, and be able to send Barton down to AAA for seasoning (Rule 5 crap keeping him from being in AAA should be up by then right?)

oh and on an unrelated note to this fanpost - but i didnt want to start a new one for this small amount of infromation

Izzy is going to see a doctor and Chris Perez was held out of the Memphis game tonight in a save situation, so I think we can go ahead and put 2 and 2 together.

Hope that is the plan...

can’t be any worse, I just want one guy in that bullpen with a nasty slider and some real heat!

I feel like

it’s easier to pry away an upcoming free agent froma team than one with a contract in place. Might as well use Duncan and reyes to get a guy that could help this lineup decrease it’s LOB numbers. I mean there gonna need to clear those guys out at the end of the season either way, might as well get something while you can even if it leaves at the end of the season also.

Reyes

didn’t have a very sharp outing for Memphis tonight.

3.2IP, 2BB, 3K, HR—68 pitches.

Another outing like that and whatever interest is out there for him will evaporate, if it hasn’t already..

by liam on May 15, 2008 11:27 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I

don’t understand why they aren’t allowing him to pitch a little bit more than that. wonder what his pitch counts are being limited to.

50

if I recall correctly

which is fine for someone not getting much work, he’s essentially back to spring training while in Memphis. Give him some time to work his count up.

DFA Kennedy if you have to,

why miss out because you have a dud signed for one year (at that time)?
then you would have to go out and sign another dud the next year.

anyway I approve this plan all the way

Duncan and Skip will be gone

if Mozeliak really is in a semi-Moneyball mode of running the organization, both of these guys can be easily replaced by cheaper (better) players in Mather/Rasmus.

The ‘09 OF, without any off-season signings, should look like Ankiel, Ludwick, Rasmus, Barton, Mather.

by Hardcore Legend on May 16, 2008 12:17 AM EDT   0 recs

Should be our outfield

THIS year in the 2nd half.

by indakind on May 16, 2008 10:38 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Mather....

I completly forgot about Joe. Graet point Hardcore, Mather definatly should have a place in the outfield next year. His line this year has been great. If he pulls good numbers two years in a row he should get alot of consideration.

Never forget Mather…Im banking on the guy. Watching him play for a season in Spgfld was a treat. It started with “yeh, this guy can play a little” and became “this guy can rake” and finally to “lets go see Mather tonite!.”

Enjoyed watching him develope so much I really hope he can be solid MLB player someday. Mather, Motte, Garcia, Perez, Anderson and of course Rasmus all made the future of the org look good in 07 at Hammons. Never had the opportunity before (yo John Q.!), watching the kids play and develope up close, hope it all pans out for all of them.

by cardschinmusic on May 16, 2008 4:33 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Speaking of Mather

He hit a 2 Run HR in 12th last night to win it for the Redbirds

He is absolutely raking this year posting an OPS of 1.038 but what does he look like in the field and can he play 3B?

by FlimtotheFlam on May 16, 2008 9:43 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Decent on defense

His defense in the OF was nothing exceptional, but he has surprising speed closing on the ball for a big guy and he catches all the routine stuff, no problem. Dont remember him ever embarassing himself whether he could catch the ball or not…..arm is maybe slightly above average and accurate.

I think SleepyCA saw him taking balls at third during ST and was pleasantly surprised.

He came up as a SS, but that was before he filled out his frame. I remember him taking balls at first in pregame ar AA for a long stretch before he was moved to the OF and he looked fine. He can back up 1st with no problem., and probably 3rd. When he’s dialed in at the plate he hits line drives, some that leave the park still on the rise…..

if they bring him up he needs to play…..Im ready for an OF of Ank, Barton, Mather and Ludwood…. Let Rasmus stay at Memphis until he figures out he still has to hit even when it aint fun. Bring up an extra pitcher in Duncans place and bid farewell to Dunc, Miles, Reyes and Schumacher can go or take balls at 2nd base in Miles place.

Stavinoha and Barden (who’s playing SS fulltime pretty much) currently have OPS. on the upside.

by cardschinmusic on May 17, 2008 6:55 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

That's where I'd like to see him

OF and backing up 1st. Albert is going for surgery at some point, we’re all aware. This allows us to keep from relying on Dunc who’s a sitting stand in (and is reasonable) at 1st.

I like how the Freese and Glaus situation is lined out. Glaus gives him two years to fill out, harness his toolkit and be avail in ‘10.

I want Mather to have a chance in the bigs, for sure. I just don’t want him to be an opportunity cost to someone who I think will fill that position quite well in a year or two.

so....

it would appear we are off the hook from him if we want to be, he just scoped as I am sure you know so I don’t really know about recovery time and so forth. I just wish he still had that slider working from 06’. That pitch was nasty!!!

If we have only 81 million dollars payroll, first off i would HALF to sign Furcal. There are few players besides reyes, rollins, hanley ramirez that provide a more explosive leadoff man who has 15-20 hr power with gg defense and the ability to steal bases and command a team. As for pitching i think that there is no base for relying on mulder any longer so a rotation of Carp,Waino, Loshe, Looper, then i think we should do everything in our power to trade for one of the trio, lowry, cain, or lincecum

by jcarro197 on May 18, 2008 8:05 AM EDT   0 recs

Trade

Lohse this season and get something in return for him, or else let him go and hope to get a sandwich pick for him.
Reyes, Thompson, and Duncan all need to be traded.
I believe that if the Dodgers are falling out of the wild card race or the west race, Furcal could be available this year but at a very steep price. Trading for him this year would give a slight edge to signing him next year since he would experience St. Louis baseball.
The Cards should go after Fuentes this season and look to re-sign him during the season.
I believe you go with a rotation next year of Carp, Wainwright, Pineiro, Wellemeyer, and Garcia/Parisi. In the pen, you start the youth movement: Motte, Perez, McClellan, Franklin, Flores, Fuentes, another RP to replace Springer.
I would still like to make a run at Brian Roberts (Baltimore might give us the most back for Duncan).
If not, sign the O-Dog in the offseason and move Kennedy to the bench. The rest of the bench should be Ryan, Schumaker/Ludwick (depending on who is not starting), Mather (OF, Corner INF backup), and Anderson.
Starters would be Molina, Pujols, Hudson, Glaus, Furcal, Rasmus, Ankiel, and Ludwick/Schumaker (preferably Ludwick).
Lineup: Furcal, Rasmus, Pujols, Ludwick, Glaus, Ankiel, Molina, Pitcher, Hudson (or if Rasmus struggles, switch him with Hudson).
