The Truth Behind the Jim Edmonds Signing
I know that we were told to stop with the Edmonds postings, but this is one of a different type. This is not regarding personal feelings about his decision to sign with Cubs or speculation as to why he did it. This is the truth.
He is a spy.
Now, before you panic, please realize that I took into account that even if the Cubs fans and clubhouse were to read this article, they would still probably have no idea what to do with it, so I feel safe sharing this information with you.
Back when Edmonds was asked to waive his no-trade clause in the off-season, Mo knew the only way Edmonds would want to leave was if he was still going to be helping the Cardinals win. Because of this, Jimmy and Mo decided in a backroom deal that he would go to the Padres, get off to a horrible start, be released and then go to the Cubs (knowing the Cubs would bite at league minimum). Both knew there would be some barriers, but Mo -- knowing Cubs' fans' gullibility -- told Edmonds "if you can hug Zambrano, and somehow get on base your first at-bat, the Cubs and their fans will notice nothing from that moment on." Edmonds, like the champ he is, delivered on both of these promises (and put a tracking device on Zambrano to boot).
So what is he going to do as a spy? Plenty of things. I can't tell you all of them (just in case somebody in Cubs' management wakes up and sees what's going on) but you can speculate all you want, and that's why I'm making this a fan post! So knock yourself out and start speculating on what Jimmy's spy tactics will be.

Jimmy Ballgame can spy to his hearts content...
it still won’t help the Cardinals win. If anything, his playing for the Cubs is the best damage he could do to the Cubs. lol sorry to rain on your parade, but I did get a chuckle out of your post. Thank you for the laugh.
I'm kind of a big deal

Jimmy putting up a .200 average while getting nearly full-time duty will help the Cubs lose, though

Really funny you mention that, as I was actually very close to involving Tatis in this post too.
Thanks for reading!

Ha!
He went underground for all these years to learn up in the ways of the spy. He basically spent all of this time watching James Bond movies. He would have been ready earlier, but Casino Royale made him adapt his strategies. He saw a more raw James Bond and decided he needed to be a more raw (raw-er?) Tatis. Tatis is now Agent Double “O” Seven…teen. (17 is his current number w/ the Mets according to Wikipedia)

He'll take it a step further
2 outs in the ninth on the last day of the season, Cubs are in the lead and a win will give them the Central Division, lazy fly ball to center, Jimmy coasts under and “accidentally” misses it completely, 3 runs score and the Cubs lose… stupid, drunken Cubs fans are stunned in the bleachers as Jimmy triumphantly rips off his jersey to reveal a bright red Cardinals 10-time World Series Champions tee shirt. He signs a one-day contract with STL in the off season, retires as a Cardinal, and a statue is built at Busch commemorating the play :D

The only thing your missing here
is Jim Ross screaming “NO!!! NO HE DIDN’T!!! OH MY GAWD!!!” as Cubs fans all throw up in their beers…

While I don't appreciate the phrase "stupid, drunken Cubs fans"...
...I must confess that this post in particular sends a chill down my spine. Well done. And well done to the writer of this fanpost. I’ve been waiting for some decent conspiracy theories regarding the Cubs’ decision to acquire Edmonds, and this is the best one yet.

Jimmy is Gollum
Was explaining to my partner about the Jimmy situation, she’d just heard. Lil 10 year old walks into the room half way into the discussion and says “He’s like Gollum isn’t he?”
So that’s my take. He’s not a spy, and he’s not all that loyal, though appeared to be Sméagol from our point of view.
We were on a ‘08 projected downturn, Pads were projected to give the west hell. He slumped out of the gate and wore a lot of the flack on why they did. They dropped him, he’s still getting paid however.
So now the Cubbies are projected and look to take the central so regardless of what the Cubbies mean to us, he’s doing it anyways.
Tolkien portrayed the ring as a curse, the chase for such a thing considered the evil of all evils. At the end of the day I don’t wish any ill will towards Jimmy and thank him for his productive years with us. However, I will consider this the evil of all evils and hope that the curse, in nature, extends to the team he so willingly chose.
This is one of the things that suck about not having the likelihood of franchise players for a whole career, but at the end of all of it, if he was a franchise player.. we wouldn’t have had him during his prime and enjoyed the successes he had while he was with us, him a factor or not.

I was at a party with ...
the Cubs team physician this weekend, and he claimed that the team would give JE two weeks to show some signs of baseball life, then give him the old thumbs up/down.
Edmonds looked pretty happy and healthy sitting on his ass all weekend as lefty after lefty took their lumps from the Cub offense.

Did you ask him
If he has stopped cursing Dusty Baker yet? And if he wet his pants in relief when Mark Prior finally left?

Although I really
like your theory and find it entertaining, the catch Edmonds made last night was nothing less than amazing. Don’t get me wrong, I am not a fan of the man even with him being one team removed from the Cards, but I think he will work out all right. He won’t be playing all the time which will hopefully preserve what he has left and give his teammates some breaks as the summer wears on. Guess we will see!
